For the first time, scientists from the Charles Darwin Foundation, along with researchers from other organizations, observed a tiburon of seven gills (Notorynchus cepedianus) and a tiburon of six gills (Hexanchus griseus)", the organization reported in a statement.

He added that the sightings occurred earth the Floreana and Spanish Islands, in the south of the archipelago, which is located 1,000 km west of the coast of Ecuador.

The Galapagos National Park (PNG), for its part, explained that these varieties, "known as cow sharks, are considered among the most primitive groups of sharks, because their skeleton retains characteristics already disappeared in other adaptations", referring to the number of gills that in most of these predators "is up to five".

Identification of the two species was confirmed by ichthyologist David Ebert of the Pacific Sharks Research Center the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.

The appearance of the seven-gill shark, which is a coastal species around the Galapagos, is exciting and raises interesting questions about its migratory behavior," said specialist Ebert.

The scientist added that "six-gill sharks are species found mainly in deep water and are of the largest and most abundant sharks in these areas," published the Darwin Foundation, which is responsible for the conservation of the environment and biodiversity of this fragile ecosystem.

Ecuador created in March 2016 a 38,000 km2 sanctuary to protect the hammerhead shark in the Galapagos, listed as Natural City School for its unique flora and fauna in the world.

The sym archipelago served as a laboratory for the English scientist Charles Darwin for his theory on the evolution of species.
