Why is the April full moon pink?

In the 1930s the Maine Farmer's Almanac began publishing American Indian Moon names for the months of the year. The moon will be a little "pink" Monday night.

The first supermoon of the year will arrive around 11:33 p.m. ET, according to the Farmers' Almanac. The full moon will be a supermoon, when the moon is within 90% of perigee, or at one of the closest points to Earth.

Typically the moon appears to be 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full moon, according to the Farmers' Almanac.

There is another supermoon coming this year on May 26. It is expected to appear bigger and shine brighter than the April moon, according to forecasters.

Today’s event is also being referred to as the “Super Pink Moon,” but it will have nothing to do with the moon's color. The Pink Moon is the Old Farmer’s Almanac nickname for April’s full moon. According to the Almanac, the “Pink Moon” got its name because it often corresponds with the early springtime blooms of creeping phlox, a flower native to northern and eastern North America.
