Red Sox prospect Jarren Duran has great reaction to first MLB hit

NBC Sports Boston 31 December, 1969 - 06:00pm

Duran stepped to the plate for his first major league at-bat in the second inning against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. The Sox center fielder took a fastball from Cole and hit into center field for his first career hit.

Duran later scored in the inning to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead, although they would ultimately lose 3-1 on an eventual night at Yankee Stadium.

“I was hoping he’d throw me a fastball,” Duran said in his postgame press conference. “He’s a really good pitcher, so I wanted to make sure that I got my pitch before he started to dice me up. So I guess that worked in my favor and I got a fastball first pitch.”

What was it like to accomplish a lifetime dream of getting your first major league hit after just one pitch?

“I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders,” Duran told reporters. “I was like, ‘Ok, I can relax now,’ just to get that first one out of the way.”

Duran was pleased with his three trips to the plate in his debut.

"I thought I put together some at-bats. I struck out my second at-bat but I thought I worked the count pretty good and was able to fight," he said. "I draw a walk in my last at-bat, hopefully keep the line moving and let (Christian Vazquez) do his thing. I think I was able to put together some good at-bats for the team."

The Red Sox and Yankees will conclude their series at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night. They also will begin a four-game series at Fenway Park on Thursday.
