'Where's my iPadOS 14.7 update?' | ZDNet

ZDNet 21 July, 2021 - 11:18am

A lot of you have been asking me where iPadOS 14.7 is, given that iOS 14.7 has been rolling out to iPhones for a while now (long enough for bugs to appear).

Doesn't Apple release iOS and iPadOS updates simultaneously?

Also, a whole bunch of tech sites said it was available alongside iOS 14.7.

Must read: Don't make this common, fatal iPhone or Android mistake

Apple seeded the release candidate versions of both iOS 14.7 and iPadOS 14.7 to developers on July 13, so it seemed like a simultaneous release was on the cards.

And then it was a no-show. I've seen random claims that it was "temporarily available" or something about it not being "fully available," but I'm skeptical. I didn't see it, no one has a copy of it, it's not on the usual download sites, and I've not seen an iPad running it.

In my mind, it's either a show-stopping bug, or, more likely, Apple pushed iOS 14.7 out to fix an iPhone security vulnerability, and either that bug is not applicable to iPadOS, or the iPadOS fix isn't ready.

I'm thinking the delay might be the reason why Apple hasn't yet released details of the security fixes in the updates that have been rolled out.

Apple has been approached for comment and I will update the post if a comment is received, but I highly doubt that the company will issue a comment regarding this.

Apple will release iPadOS 14.7 (or perhaps 14.7.1) when it's good and ready.

Apple confirms iOS 14.7 unlocking bug headache, especially for enterprise users | ZDNet

ZDNet 21 July, 2021 - 10:31am

Another day, another iOS bug.

This one affects those who have upgraded an older iPhone equipped with Touch ID to iOS 14.7, and who also use an Apple Watch.

It's been six years since the first Apple Watch was released, and it's pretty clear to most that Apple's wearable is the best smartwatch available. It requires an iPhone, though, so Android phone owners need a different companion... and there are plenty of good options available.

If you have your iPhone set to unlock your Apple Watch automatically, then this feature may no longer work.

Must read: Don't make this common, fatal iPhone or Android mistake

According to a support document published by Apple, "an issue in iOS 14.7 affects the ability of iPhone models with Touch ID to unlock Apple Watch."

This is not a big deal, and typing the passcode into the Apple Watch is hardly a hardship, but muscle memory is a strange thing, and you may have gotten used to your Apple Watch being unlocked automatically by now.

So why did Apple publish a support document so quickly for such an obscure bug?

Because this bug affects enterprise users.

And for those users, things are more complicated.

If the Apple Watch is paired to an iPhone with a Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile that requires an alphanumeric passcode, then users won't be able to type the passcode into the Apple Watch.

The solution here is cumbersome -- users will have to request that the MDM administrator remove the alphanumeric passcode requirement from the iPhone, then unpair and erase the Apple Watch before setting it up again.

That's a lot of faff.

The support document also reminds MDM administrators that they can defer updating affected iPhones until a patch is released.

Dunno… lost in time and space perhaps.

Alert: Update to iOS 14.7 Now to Protect Against Dangerous Wi-Fi Bug

Mac Rumors 21 July, 2021 - 02:13am

While some have claimed the bug "permanently" disabled their ‌iPhone‌'s Wi-Fi, other users found that resetting their network settings after connecting to the network restored Wi-Fi for the ‌iPhone‌. Some affected users also had to resort to a factory reset to be able to reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Once the bug became widely reported, some users sought to prevent an attack by disabling the Wi-Fi auto-join feature and avoiding public Wi-Fi hotspots.

Earlier this month, the security researchers at ZecOps discovered that the vulnerability is even more dangerous in iOS 14.6 since it no longer requires users to connect to networks titled "%p%s%s%s%s%n," with attackers able to directly exploit it using Remote Code Execution with no interaction from the victim needed.

Last month, Apple previewed iOS 15, the next major update to iOS destined for a public launch this fall. iOS 14.7 will therefore likely be the last major update to the operating system ahead of iOS 15's release in the fall.

The iOS 14.7 update also includes support for the MagSafe Battery Pack, the ability to merge Apple Cards, HomePod timer management, expanded Air Quality information, updates to the Podcasts app, and more.

Google is also updating its review process to make it easier for Google Maps users to leave detailed reviews. The review interface will prompt users to add information like price ranges or whether a restaurant offers takeout or delivery.

For Android users, Google has added a new Timeline Insights tab that's designed to provide details on modes of transportation used, miles traveled, and how much time has been spent at different places like shops, airports, and restaurants.

A Trips feature, also available on Android, lets users relive past trips that they've taken by resurfacing restaurants visited, hotels stayed in, and more. There is no word on whether Timeline Insights or Trips is coming to iOS, but these features require detailed Location History.

iOS 15: What's New With Notifications

MacRumors 20 July, 2021 - 12:35pm

Notifications from apps now display larger app icons so it's easier to see what's what at a glance. When you get a text from someone from an app like Messages, it will include their contact photo to make it easier to identify who is messaging you.

The Notification Summary is an opt-in feature that lets you control when notifications from unimportant apps are delivered. In the Notifications section of the Settings app, tapping on Notification Summary walks you through the initial setup process.

Apps need to be selected one by one, but the iPhone will suggest the apps that send the most notifications. You can set the Notification Summary to be delivered multiple times per day.

Apps sending notifications or Messages threads can be muted temporarily, either for the next hour or for the entire day.

If you're part of a messaging thread that's particularly active but you aren't participating, your ‌iPhone‌ will send you a notification that suggests muting it so you're not bothered.

With Notification Summary, notifications that are time sensitive are still delivered right away. So if you're waiting on food delivery, a ride, or get a fraud alert from your bank, you'll know immediately and won't miss it in the Notification Summary.

Apple developed a Time Sensitive notification API for developers for apps that need to deliver notifications as soon as possible, so as of this fall, apps will be able to use the Time Sensitive notification feature.

Here are the most exciting new iOS 15 features Apple didn’t tell you about

Yahoo Entertainment 20 July, 2021 - 11:01am

The magnification loupe for text cursor selection was perfect as is. But Apple a few years ago replaced it with a subpar interface. Thankfully, iOS 15 will see the return of the magnification loupe. Apple notes that users will be able to “select exactly the text you want with an improved cursor that magnifies the text you’re looking at.”

Apple Maps is finally catching up to Google Maps in one major area: scheduling options. In iOS 15, Apple Maps users will at long last allow users to call up directions while specifying a particular departure time or desired arrival time.

This is a particularly nifty iOS 15 tip. The next-gen iteration of iOS will allow users to drag files between apps. For instance, users will be able to drag an image from their camera roll and drag it right into an email. This is a welcome addition to iOS and should provide mobile users with a more desktop-style user experience.

While we can’t say we’re fans of the new mobile Safari aesthetic, this is one iOS 15 tip you’ll want to be aware of. With the new iteration of mobile Safari, users will be able to “pull to refresh” whatever webpage they’re on.

This is an especially exciting iOS 15 feature to be aware of. With iOS 15, users will be able to take advantage of the “Find My Network” framework to locate a device even if it’s been erased. What’s more, Apple notes that it’s implemented security measures to make it harder for thieves to sell it.

“To help ensure that nobody is tricked into purchasing your device,” Apple says, “the Hello screen will clearly show that your device is locked, locatable, and still yours.”

The iPhone Weather app has always been decent, but it’s long lacked features available in popular third-party apps. To that end, the Weather app in iOS 15 will be getting some nice enhancements. As a prime example, iOS 15 can send push notifications when it’s about to start raining, snowing, or hailing.

For the first time, iOS 15 users can adjust the size of text on a per-app basis. This might be helpful if you want a large font for your email but a standard font size when browsing the web.

As we listed last week, some of iOS 15’s more advanced features will require a newer iPhone model. For example, Live Text and some enhanced Apple Maps features will require an iPhone XS or later.

The founders of Sweetch, an Israeli company creating its own AI-driven behavior change app, are betting that if you got that notification in a different way, you’ll be more likely to take its advice. Yossi Bahagon, the founder of Sweetch, describes the company’s approach to digital reminders as a mixture of artificial intelligence and emotional intelligence. “It's about ongoing hyperpersonalized engagement that increases the likelihood of the patient doing what [they need] to do,” says Bahagon.

When the Department of Education announced in 2018 that the agency would offer a government-branded debit card that college students could use to access some of their financial aid funds, officials touted it as an innovative product designed specifically to benefit students.
