What is the Britney Spears conservatorship?

Since 2008, Spears has been living under a conservatorship that deprives her of control over her financial life and her personal life. All the shots in Spears's life have been called by a team primarily led by her father, Jamie Spears. ... Britney is being held captive by her family against her will, said another. VoxIs Britney Spears’s conservatorship dangerous?

Who better to weigh in on Britney Spears than a fellow ’90s icon?

Everyone who’s anyone is team #FreeBritney these days, which is a good thing, because the public pressure seems to have helped move the needle on her oppressive conservatorship. Fans and fellow pop stars alike have spoken up in support, but the statements from people who knew her way back when resonate even more deeply.

One of those friends is AJ McLean, who first met the singer back when she was on the Mickey Mouse Club. On Wednesday’s episode of SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, the Backstreet Boy told the host:

“My thoughts and my prayers are with her. I am 100 percent team Britney.”

“I’ve said this to a few friends recently that, you know, back in the beginning of this whole conservatorship, when everything happened about 13 years ago, you know, I could kind of empathize in that moment, maybe with her family, with how things transpired. … But for it to go on this long I think is absolutely asinine. I think it’s insane. I think it is completely brutal.”

Not only do the two artists have a history together, in the present, they apparently live quite close together:

“She’s pretty much my neighbor. I see her often. She goes to the same shopping center that I do. There’s this amazing cupcake shop that she goes through, that I go to.”

“The last time I saw her, it broke my heart. … She was with a gentleman. I’m assuming it was security and/or maybe a driver because I know, based on her words — which I do believe 100% — you know, she’s not allowed to drive herself. She can’t do anything, like, literally. She can’t do anything.”

“When I last saw her, my wife asked me to go in to get some cupcakes for a birthday party for one of my daughter’s friends. Went in, she was there, she looked right at me and I was like, ‘Hey, it’s AJ.’ And she just kind of had this glass face. Like, she just didn’t know who was there. It took her a minute. And then she realized it was me, and we hugged and we talked for a brief moment, but I could just see that this wasn’t her. Like, I’m not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago.”

AJ offered a possible explanation for why she didn’t recognize him:

“I know a lot of that, in my opinion, could be whatever they’re keeping her on… which is just insane. It’s not fair, and I just don’t think it’s right.”

The I Want It That Way singer also commented on some of the abuses Britney brought up in her testimony, stating:

“The one thing that she shared that really really irks me is the whole IUD situation. I mean, that, to me, is physical abuse. Just the whole thing to me is just, it’s grotesque. And I pray for her, I really feel in my heart that she’s going to break free of all of this, and I really hope that she does. She’s a sweetheart.”

On an even more personal level, he brought up the fact that she had been isolated from friends in her AA program. The Dancing with the Stars alum shared:

“One thing that really grinds my gears, because I am sober and I am in an AA program, the fact that she cannot stay in contact with anyone from her fellowship, from when she was going to AA meetings, that is BS to me. Because that’s the whole core of what we do in this program, is fellowship. We lean on each other, we look up to each other for support and… if somebody were to take that from me, it would really be difficult for me to stay sober, honest to god. I just wish the best for her, honestly.”

“Free Britney. That’s my whole thing, man. All for it.”

We’re with you on that, AJ!

How scary and sad to see a friend and peer go through something so upsetting and violating. We hope recent events have truly been the beginning of the end for the conservatorship, and that Britney will be allowed to reconnect with old pals like this soon.

AJ McLean on last time he saw Britney Spears: 'It broke my heart'

Yahoo News 15 July, 2021 - 06:06pm

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s "Andy Cohen Live" on Wednesday, the Backstreet Boys singer, 43, told host Andy Cohen that he was concerned when he ran into Spears, 39, at a cupcake shop in Los Angeles.

"The last time I saw her, it broke my heart. ... She was with a gentleman. I'm assuming it was security and/or maybe a driver because I know, based on her words — which I do believe 100% — she's not allowed to drive herself. She can't do anything, like, literally. She can't do anything," said McLean.

The "I Want It That Way" singer went on to say that despite knowing each other for more than two decades, Spears didn't recognize him at first.

"She looked right at me and I was like, ‘Hey, it's AJ.’ And she just kind of had this glass face. Like, she just didn't know who was there. It took her a minute," he recalled.

"And then she realized it was me and we hugged and we talked for a brief moment. But I could just see that, you know, this, this wasn't her. Like, I'm not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago," he added.

McLean had harsh words for Spears' family for keeping the pop star in her controversial conservatorship, which is controlled by her father, Jamie Spears. Britney Spears was placed in the conservatorship in 2008 after her public mental health breakdown.

"I've said this to a few friends recently that, you know, back in the beginning of this whole conservatorship, when everything happened about 13 years ago, you know, I could kind of empathize in that moment, maybe with her family, with how things transpired," said the singer.

He added, "But for it to go on this long I think is absolutely asinine. I think it's insane. I think it is completely brutal."

McLean's comments come less than a month after Britney Spears told a Los Angeles probate judge she's been "traumatized" by her controversial conservatorship.

During an explosive 20-minute testimony, which came after a decade of mostly silence on her part, Spears shared harrowing stories about the lack of control she has over her own life. At one point, Spears claimed that her conservatorship prevents her from removing an IUD so she cannot have another child. The singer told the court that her father and anyone else involved in the conservatorship "should be in jail."

On Wednesday, McLean told Cohen that he was horrified to hear of Spears' "IUD situation."

"I mean, that to me is physical abuse. Just the whole thing to me is just, it's grotesque," he said.

McLean described himself as "100% Team Britney," telling Cohen, "My prayers are with her."

"I really feel in my heart that she's going to break free of all of this, and I really hope that she does. She's a sweetheart," he said.

Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean Details Interaction With Britney Spears That “Broke” His Heart

Yahoo Entertainment 15 July, 2021 - 06:06pm

The Backstreet Boys singer called Britney Spears' conservatorship "asinine," "insane" and "completely brutal" while speaking on SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live on July 14. "My thoughts and my prayers are with her. I am 100 percent team Britney," he shared.

AJ then explained that Britney is "pretty much my neighbor" and doesn't live very far from him. In fact, he sees her "often" because they both go to the same shopping center in the Los Angeles area.

"There's this amazing cupcake shop that she goes through, that I go to," he said. Though they don't usually chat when he runs into her, AJ revealed why his most recent interaction with the "Toxic" singer was so heartbreaking for him.

"The last time I saw her, it broke my heart," AJ began. "Last time I saw her, she was with a gentleman. I'm assuming it was security or maybe a driver."

The "I Want It That Way" artist was there because his wife had asked him to get some cupcakes for a birthday party for one of his daughter's friends.

"Went in, she was there, she looked right at me and I was like, ‘Hey, it's AJ,'" he recalled. "And she just kind of had this glass face. Like, she just didn't know who was there. It took her a minute. And then she realized it was me, and we hugged and we talked for a brief moment, but I could just see that this wasn't her. Like, I'm not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago."

During his interview, AJ also gave his thoughts on other restrictions the pop star said she has been enduring.

For example, the boy bander said it "really grinds my gears" that Britney allegedly isn't allowed to "stay in contact" with anyone from her AA meetings or fellowship due to her conservatorship.

She told the judge in June, "I have a friend that I used to do AA meetings with. I did AA for two years. I did three meetings a week. I've met a bunch of women there. And I'm not able to see my friends that live eight minutes away from me, which I find extremely strange," according to the transcript of her testimony published by Variety.

After saying he is also part of a sobriety program, AJ remarked, "That is BS to me, because that's the whole core of what we do in this program is fellowship."

As he put it, "We lean on each other, we look up to each other for support and... if somebody were to take that from me, it would really be difficult for me to stay sober, honest to god... I just wish [that] for her, honestly."

AJ slammed another part of Britney's situation that he said "really irks me," pointing to her testimony that she cannot remove her IUD to have another baby, despite her wishes to do so.

"That, to me, is physical abuse. Just the whole thing to me is just, it's grotesque," the Dancing With the Stars alum reflected. "I really feel in my heart that she's going to break free of all of this, and I really hope that she does. She's a sweetheart."

On July 14, Britney scored a legal victory when a judge ruled that she can hire her own private attorney. She chose former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart and delivered another powerful testimony during the court hearing.

Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean says the last time he saw Britney Spears 'broke my heart'

Yahoo Entertainment 15 July, 2021 - 06:06pm

McLean revealed on Wednesday's episode of SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live that he's had an up-close view of the situation, because they live in the same neighborhood and go to the same shopping center. He said he sees her "often" at a cupcake shop they both frequent.

"The last time I saw her, it broke my heart. Last time I saw her, she was with a gentleman," McLean said. "I'm assuming it was security and, or maybe, a driver because I know based on her words, which I do believe 100 percent, you know, she's not allowed to drive herself."

McLean said Spears, who worked with the Backstreet Boys as recently as 2016 on their song "Matches," didn't seem to recognize him at first.

"Went in, she was there, she looked right at me and I was like, 'Hey, it's AJ.' And she just kind of had this glass face," he said. "Like, she just didn't know who was there. It took her a minute. And then she realized it was me and we, we hugged and we talked for a brief moment, but I could just see that, you know, this, this wasn't her, like, I'm not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago. And I know a lot of that, in my opinion, could be whatever they're, they're keeping her on or whatever they have her on, which is just insane. It's not, it's not fair. And I just don't think it's right. So again, Free Britney, that's my whole thing, man. All for it."

McLean said he was especially bothered by the idea that Spears couldn't communicate with people she knows from rehab.

"One thing that really grinds my gears because I am sober and because I am in a, a program, the fact that she cannot stay in contact with anyone from her fellowship, from when she was going to [Alcoholic Anonymous] meetings, that is, is [bulls***] to me because that's, that's the whole core of what we do in this program, is fellowship," he said. We lean on each other, we look up to each other for support and, and, and, and, you know, if somebody were to take that from me, it would really be difficult for me to stay sober, honest to God."

McLean's comments come on the same day as Spears's latest hearing in her court battle to gain control of her life. According to TMZ, a judge in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom surrounded by protesters from the #FreeBritney movement ruled that she is allowed to hire Mathew Rosengart to be her attorney, as she had requested.

Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean Had A Concerning Interaction With Britney Spears The Last Time He Saw Her

BuzzFeed 15 July, 2021 - 06:06pm

"In my opinion, that could be whatever they're keeping her on, which is just insane. It's not fair, and I don't think it's right," AJ said.

Backstreet Boys Member Reveals His Concern for Britney Spears During Last Interaction

PopCulture.com 15 July, 2021 - 01:37pm

Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean recently shared his concern for his longtime friend Britney Spears following the massive "Free Britney" movement taking place. During an interview with fellow Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, the 43-year-old commented on her conservatorship, referring to it as "insane." The two were on Sirius XM's Andy Cohen Live when McLean shared genuine concern on what irks him the most about it all, even noting the last time he saw her broke his heart.

"I could tell you right now that my thoughts and my prayers are with her, I am 100 percent team Britney," he said when Cohen asked the singers their thoughts on Spears' situation and her well-being. "I've said this to a few friends recently that, back in the beginning of this whole conservatorship — when everything happened about 13 years ago — I could kind of empathize in that moment maybe with her family, how things transpired, but for it to go on this long, I think is absolutely asinine, I think it's insane, I think it is completely brutal." McLean then shared what part of her statement that she was recently able to give during her court hearing, that "irks" him the most.

"The one thing she shared that really, really irks me is the whole IUD situation. I mean that to me is physical abuse. Just the whole thing to me is grotesque," he added. He then said that while he prays for her continuously, he truly believes she's on the cusp of breaking free. "I pray for her. I really feel in my heart that she's going to break free of all of this, and I really hope that she does. She's a sweetheart." McClean also stated that the two see each other often only because she goes to the same "shopping center" as he does, not to mention the two live so close together, so that allows them to run into each other every now and again.

However, the last time they saw each other wasn't the best. "The last time I saw her, it broke my heart," he said. "Last time I saw her, she was with a gentleman. I'm assuming it was security or maybe a driver [...] she can't do anything," he added.

McClean may just be right about her breaking free though because after an emotional day in court when Spears spoke for herself for the first time in two years, it's been revealed that she's finally able to hire her own lawyers now instead of using ones who have been appointed to her. Judge Brenda Penny will allow the singer to replace her current attorney with a new one, possibly being former federal prosecutor Matthew Rosengart. In honor of the exciting news that was revealed on Wednesday, Spears took to Instagram to share her excitement with fans by horseback riding and doing cartwheels. She also thanked the massive amount of fans who have been pushing for her to break free.

AJ McLean Says Last Heartbreaking Interaction He Had With Britney Spears 'Wasn't Her'

HuffPost 15 July, 2021 - 11:21am

The Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean is speaking out in support of Britney Spears, slamming her conservatorship as “insane” and revealing the moment he last saw her that broke his heart.

In an interview this week with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM alongside fellow BSB member Nick Carter, McLean called the conservatorship that’s been controlling Spears’ life and finances since 2008 “asinine,” “insane” and “completely brutal.”

Spears recently spoke out on her own behalf for the first time since 2019, telling a court during a hearing last month that the conservatorship was doing her more harm than good and asked that it end. During an emotional 20-minute speech, Spears explained how the conservatorship had such a grip on her life that her conservators wouldn’t allow her to remove her IUD so she could have a child with boyfriend Sam Asghari.

Addressing that specific issue, McLean says that “really irks him.”

“That, to me, is physical abuse. Just the whole thing to me is just, it’s grotesque. I pray for her. I really feel in my heart that she’s going to break free of all of this, and I really hope that she does. She’s a sweetheart,” he said, before adding that the pop sensation is “pretty much” his neighbor.

The 43-year-old went on to say that he sees Spears out and about often because they go to the same shopping center in Los Angeles.

“There’s this amazing cupcake shop that she goes to that I go to,” he said. “The last time I saw her, it broke my heart. Last time I saw her, she was with a gentleman. I’m assuming it was security and/or maybe a driver.”

McLean explained that he was buying cupcakes for a birthday party for one of his daughter’s friends when he spotted Spears: “I went in, she was there, she looked right at me and I was like, ‘Hey, it’s AJ.’ And she just kind of had this glass face. Like, she just didn’t know who was there. It took her a minute. And then she realized it was me, and we hugged and we talked for a brief moment, but I could just see that this wasn’t her. Like, I’m not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago.”

He added that he doesn’t think the conservatorship is “fair” or “right,” and added: “Free Britney!”

Previously, McLean has been vocal about backing Spears and showing support for her on various forms of social media. On TikTok, McLean told fans, “This shit has gone on long enough! Let my girl live her life And be free to be who she is!”

This shit has gone on long enough! Let my girl live her life And be free to be who she is! Hearing this yesterday made me sick! #freebritney let’s go!

As of this week, Spears has been permitted to choose a new attorney for her conservatorship. While her court-appointed lawyer, Samuel Ingham, had already formally requested to step down in a court filing, the decision required approval from a California judge, which has now been granted.

AJ McLean Shares Concerning Interaction He Had With Britney Spears

Scary Mommy 15 July, 2021 - 09:15am

by Christina Marfice July 15, 2021

AJ McLean is officially a member of the #FreeBritney movement. The Backstreet Boys member appeared alongside Nick Carter on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, where he opened up about his decades-long friendship with Spears, and a very concerning interaction he had with her recently.

“She’s pretty much my neighbor. I see her often. She goes to the same shopping center that I do. There’s this amazing cupcake shop that she goes through, that I go to,” McLean said. “The last time I saw her, it broke my heart. Last time I saw her, she was with a gentleman. I’m assuming it was security or maybe a driver…she can’t do anything.”

McLean continued, saying that despite the fact that he and Spears have known each other since they were young, she seemed to not even recognize him at first.

“Went in, she was there, she looked right at me, and I was like, ‘Hey, it’s AJ.’ And she just kind of had this glass face. Like, she just didn’t know who was there,” he said. “It took her a minute. And then she realized it was me, and we hugged and we talked for a brief moment, but I could just see that this wasn’t her. Like, I’m not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago.”

When asked, McLean said he believes the change in Spears’s personality is due, at least in part, to the drugs she’s said in court testimony her team forces her to take.

“In my opinion, that could be whatever they’re keeping her on, which is just insane. It’s not fair, and I don’t think it’s right,” McLean said. Of the conservatorship, he added, “For it to go on for this long is absolutely asinine. I think it’s insane. It is completely brutal.”

Still, McLean said he still has faith that Spears is going to win her long and intensifying war against the conservators who have controlled her life for 13 years.

“She’s going to break free of all of this,” he said. “My thoughts and my prayers are with her.”

McLean’s story, coupled with the truly disturbing testimony Spears herself has given in court, paints a chilling picture of what’s going on behind the scenes of this conservatorship. We’re all with McLean here: Free Britney.
