Collection will be released globally on October 26th

President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen will release a joint book, Renegades: Born in the U.S.A., on October 26th globally via Higher Ground/Penguin Random House.

The tome is described as “a collection of candid, intimate, and entertaining conversations,” which began in Spotify’s co-produced podcast of the same name. Published in an oversized, fully illustrated format, the book will also feature rare and exclusive photographs from the authors’ personal collections and never-before-seen archival material, including Springsteen’s handwritten lyrics and Obama’s annotated speeches.

“Over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility,” Obama writes in the book’s opening pages. “About work, about family, and about America. In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much. Trying to chronicle the stories of its people. Looking for a way to connect our own individual searches for meaning and truth and community with the larger story of America.”

Springsteen adds, in the book’s introduction: “There were serious conversations about the fate of the country, the fortune of its citizens, and the destructive, ugly, corrupt forces at play that would like to take it all down. This is a time of vigilance when who we are is being seriously tested. Hard conversations about who we are and who we want to become can perhaps serve as a small guiding map for some of our fellow citizens.”

“This is a time for serious consideration of who we want to be and what kind of country we will leave our children,” the musician continues. “Will we let slip through our hands the best of us or will we turn united to face the fire? Within this book, you won’t find the answers to those questions, but you will find a couple of seekers doing their best to get us to ask better questions.”

The English-language print edition, to be published in the United States and Canada by Crown, will be 320 pages long and include more than 350 full-color photographs and illustrations with a suggested list price of $50.00 in the United States and $65.00 in Canada. The digital edition will be priced at $17.99 in the United States and $21.99 in Canada. A Spanish-language edition will also be available, published as Renegados. Pre-order the book here.

Renegades: Born in the USA by Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen - Teaser

Crown Publishing Group 22 July, 2021 - 11:01am

Obama and Springsteen to Publish Book Based on Their Spotify Series

The New York Times 22 July, 2021 - 10:38am

Crown is publishing “Renegades: Born in the USA,” a book adaptation of the podcast conversations.

In “Renegades,” a podcast collaboration between Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen, the former president acknowledged that it was, at a glance, an odd partnership.

“On the surface, Bruce and I don’t have a lot in common,” he said. “He’s a white guy from a small town in Jersey; I’m a Black guy of mixed race, born in Hawaii, with a childhood that took me around the world. He’s a rock ‘n’ roll icon. I’m a lawyer and politician — not as cool.”

But they have become vacation buddies and avid collaborators whose podcast — a series of frank conversations about race, fatherhood, social justice and American identity — became one of the podcasts with the most listeners around the world on Spotify.

Now, they will be co-authors of sorts, with the coming release of a book of their conversations. This October, Crown, an imprint of Penguin Random House, is publishing “Renegades: Born in the USA,” a book adaptation of the podcast. The 320-page book includes introductions by Obama and Springsteen, more than 350 photos and illustrations, and archival material such as Springsteen’s handwritten lyrics and Obama’s annotated speeches.

In his introduction, Obama describes how the conversations grew out of “our ongoing effort to figure out how it is that we got here, and how we can tell a more unifying story that starts to close the gap between America’s ideals and its reality.”

As salable book ideas go, a collaboration between a rock star and a former president seems a sure bet. (Crown is suggesting a list price of $50 in the United States and $65 in Canada.)

Springsteen’s memoir, “Born to Run,” which was released by Simon & Schuster in 2016, was a hit, selling nearly half a million hardcover copies in its first few months on sale. Obama’s 2020 memoir, “A Promised Land,” which was published by Crown, has sold 8.2 million copies globally, and nearly five million in North America.

The book version of “Renegades” also marks the latest release from the Obamas’ growing media empire. It is being produced in partnership with Higher Ground, the company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, which has struck exclusive production deals with Netflix for film and television and with Spotify for podcasts. The Obamas sold their memoirs to Crown in 2017 for a record-breaking $65 million. Michelle Obama’s memoir, “Becoming,” sold more than 16 million copies globally since its release in 2018.

Obama and Springsteen got to know each other in 2008 while Obama was campaigning, and became friends over the years. Springsteen performed at the White House in January 2017, as Obama was preparing to leave office.

In their podcast conversations, the pair largely focused on personal stories about their lives and avoided partisan politics, but spoke generally about the urgent need to understand and address divisions in American society.

“This is a time of vigilance when who we are is being seriously tested,” Springsteen writes in his introduction to “Renegades. “Hard conversations about who we are and who we want to become can perhaps serve as a small guiding map for some of our fellow citizens.”

"Renegades: Born in the USA" is described by publisher Penguin Random House as "a collection of candid, intimate, and entertaining conversations" about "life, music, and their enduring love of America" between the "Thunder Road" singer and the 44th president.

The book, due out on Oct. 26, was borne out of the high-profile pair's popular Spotify podcast, which debuted in February.

In addition to the conversations between the 71-year-old musician and 59-year-old former commander in chief, who are described in a promotional video for the book as longtime friends, the project will feature "rare and exclusive" photographs and never-before-seen material, including Springsteen's handwritten lyrics and speeches annotated by Obama.

The $50 book, the publisher touted in a Thursday announcement, will offer "a compelling and beautifully illustrated portrait of two outsiders — one Black and one white — who have helped shape the American story."

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band 1979 concert film to arrive later this year | Hotpress

hotpress.com 22 July, 2021 - 08:25am

A Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band concert film, The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts, is set to be released later this year.

Bringing together two of their Musicians United for Safe Energy benefit concerts, popularly known as the 'No Nukes' concerts, "the film will give audiences around the world the chance to witness performances that marked the rise of the future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers," said Sony Music Entertainment in a statement.

"Very little filmed footage of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band is available from this era, so The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts is a rare opportunity to see the band – just six years into their story – give an explosive performance that became an instant classic.

The film features remixed and remastered audio, and was edited from the original 16mm film by longtime Springsteen collaborator, Thom Zinny.

No Nukes, All Bruce: multi-cam pro-shot at @TheGarden 1979 MUSE Concerts, 16mm footage of @Springsteen & the ESB has been edited into a full concert film (a composite of 9/21 & 9/22/79) for 2021 release, remixed and remastered audio. Obama-Springsteen book 'Renegades' coming in October

Associated Press 22 July, 2021 - 05:03am

NEW YORK (AP) — There’s a new chapter in the friendship between Barack and the Boss.

“Renegades: Born in the USA” is a bound edition of the popular “Renegades” podcast featuring conversations on everything from fame to cars to the country itself between former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen. Penguin Random House and Obama’s Higher Ground company announced Thursday that “Renegades” will come out October 26. The $50 book will include rare photographs, handwritten Springsteen lyrics and annotated Obama speeches.

“Over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility,” Obama said in a statement. “About work, about family, and about America. In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much. Trying to chronicle the stories of its people. Looking for a way to connect our own individual searches for meaning and truth and community with the larger story of America.”

In an introduction for the book, Springsteen wrote that he and Obama had raised serious issues about the “fate of the country, the fortune of its citizens, and the destructive, ugly, corrupt forces at play that would like to take it all down.”

“This is a time for serious consideration of who we want to be and what kind of country we will leave our children,” wrote Springsteen, who in 2016 received a Medal of Freedom from Obama. “Will we let slip through our hands the best of us or will we turn united to face the fire? Within this book you won’t find the answers to those questions, but you will find a couple of seekers doing their best to get us to ask better questions.”

Bruce Springsteen and President Barack Obama to Release ‘Renegades: Born in the USA’ Interview Book

Variety 22 July, 2021 - 04:58am

By Jem Aswad

Following on their podcast series earlier this year, former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen will release a book titled “Renegades: Born in the USA” via Higher Ground and Penguin Random House on October 26. The book is described as “a collection of candid, intimate, and entertaining conversations between the two,” building on the Spotify podcast series by adding new stories as well as more than 350 photographs and illustrations, including exclusive images and archival materials from the authors’ personal collections, among them Springsteen’s handwritten song lyrics and annotated drafts of Obama’s acclaimed “Selma” and “Amazing Grace” speeches.

The news was announced by Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House, who acquired world rights from Deneen Howell of Williams & Connolly LLP.

In the book’s opening pages, Obama writes of the pair’s conversations, “Over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility. About work, about family, and about America. In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much. Trying to chronicle the stories of its people. Looking for a way to connect our own individual searches for meaning and truth and community with the larger story of America.”

The conversations took place in Springsteen’s home recording studio — where Variety interviewed and photographed the singer in 2017 — and over “at least one Corvette ride,” covering “marriage and fatherhood, race and masculinity, the lure of the open road and the call back to home, some of the most inspiring American heroes of all time, and music. . . . They talk a lot about music.”

Springsteen writes, “There were serious conversations about the fate of the country, the fortune of its citizens, and the destructive, ugly, corrupt forces at play that would like to take it all down. This is a time of vigilance when who we are is being seriously tested. Hard conversations about who we are and who we want to become can perhaps serve as a small guiding map for some of our fellow citizens. . . . This is a time for serious consideration of who we want to be and what kind of country we will leave our children. Will we let slip through our hands the best of us or will we turn united to face the fire? Within this book you won’t find the answers to those questions, but you will find a couple of seekers doing their best to get us to ask better questions.”

And as President Obama writes, “the conversations Bruce and I had in 2020 feel as urgent today as they did back then. They represent our ongoing effort to figure out how it is that we got here, and how we can tell a more unifying story that starts to close the gap between America’s ideals and its reality.”

A Spanish language edition will also be available.
