Keifer Sykes Hits Shot Worth $1 Million In TBT, Signs With The Pacers

UPROXX 04 August, 2021 - 10:21am

TBT employs the Elam Ending, ensuring that the final play of each and every game will end with the ball going through the net, rather than playing to triple zeroes on the clock. In this instance, that set up for incredibly interesting drama, with both teams missing potential game-winners before Sykes connected on a well-contested triple.

Sykes was the star of the night even before the final basket, finishing with a game-best 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 3-for-6 from three-point range. The TBT win wasn’t the only positive thing for Sykes either, as it was quickly reported that the 27-year-old guard will be signing a contract of some kind with the Indiana Pacers.

While TBT isn’t considered must-see viewing for casual basketball fans, it often provides real excitement and this was no different. Following the final bucket, there was clear joy and, if nothing else, the folks from Boeheim’s Army will split $1 million and memories that will resonate for years to come.

Cuomo “sexually harassed” women, violating law, NY AG says: Gov. Andrew Cuomo “sexually harassed” multiple women in the workplace, creating a hostile work environment that violated state and federal law, state Attorney General Letitia James said on Tuesday. The findings of a four-month investigation detail what James said was a pattern of sexual harassment by Cuomo involving multiple women, including a state trooper. James said the investigative report revealed “a disturbing pattern of conduct by the governor of the state of New York.”

Defiant Cuomo won’t resign: “I will not be distracted”: Gov. Andrew Cuomo insisted on Tuesday that he would not resign, despite the findings of the report. “My job is not about me, my job is about you,” Cuomo said in a video statement he released online. “I will not be distracted from that job.” Cuomo’s lawyer claimed James’ investigators conducted an “utterly biased investigation.”

Biden among those calling for Cuomo to resign: President Joe Biden on Tuesday became the highest-ranking elected Democrat to say that Gov. Andrew Cuomo should step down. The president made his comments at a White House news conference where he was asked if he stood by his comments in March that Cuomo should resign if investigators found his accusers to be credible. “I stand by that statement,” Biden said.

Editorial: Assembly must impeach Gov. Cuomo now: Democrats who control the New York state Assembly should waste no time voting to impeach Gov. Andrew Cuomo for sexually harassing women who worked for him (and some who didn’t), for creating a hostile work environment for women in the Executive Chamber, and for retaliating against an accuser by leaking confidential internal documents to the press. Wegmans asks all customers to wear masks: As the Delta variant of Covid-19 continues to spread across the country and across Central New York, Wegmans has joined a growing numbers of companies asking all costumers, vaccinated or not, to wear masks while inside its stores.

More communities leave marijuana decision to voters: Three more Central New York municipalities are opting out of retail marijuana sales, but they are all letting the public have the final decision with a vote.

Keifer Sykes (28) and the rest of Boeheim’s Army celebrate after Sykes’ 3-point shot gave the team a 69-67 win over Team 23 in the championship game of The Basketball Tournament, a $1 million winner-take-all event, on Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio. (Photo by Ben Solomon for TBT)

Million-dollar shot: After seven years of trying, Boeheim’s Army finally took home the title — and the $1 million prize — of The Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night. While the team has always been made up mostly of former Syracuse players, it was former University of Wisconsin-Green Bay star Keifer Sykes that was the hero in the title game, draining a 3-pointer to give Boeheim’s Army a dramatic 69-67 win over Team 23.

Did SU miss warning signs in women’s basketball program? One day after Syracuse women’s basketball coach Quentin Hillsman resigned from his position in the middle of an investigation into alleged bullying and inappropriate behavior, The Athletic published a detailed story describing how high-ranking SU officials appeared to miss warning signs about the coach’s behavior for more than a decade.

I.O.C. seeks answers after two Chinese athletes wore Mao pins during the medal ceremony.

The Juice Online 04 August, 2021 - 01:59am

The International Olympic Committee said it was investigating a potential breach of Olympic regulations after two cyclists from China wore pins bearing the silhouette of Mao Zedong in a medal ceremony.

The small red and gold pins — once ubiquitous symbols representing Mao’s three-decade rule over China — were attached to the track suits of the cyclists, Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi, when they received gold medals in the women’s sprint on Monday.

The cyclists’ badges are a potential violation of Rule 50 of the Olympic charter, which bans “political, religious or racial propaganda” at Olympic venues.

In a news briefing on Wednesday, Mark Adams, an I.O.C. spokesman, said that the committee had asked China’s Olympic delegation to submit a report explaining the incident, and that it had been promised a “full formal answer soon.”

“They have also assured us already that this will not happen again,” Mr. Adams said.

Separately, the Korea Badminton Association said on Wednesday that it had filed a complaint with the World Badminton Federation after a Chinese player was captured on video swearing in a doubles match against South Korean players.

The Chinese badminton player, Chen Qingchen, repeatedly shouted what has been interpreted as a common Chinese obscenity. She apologized, saying that she was merely celebrating points scored and that she would adjust her “bad pronunciation.” But she did not say what she had intended to shout.

The incident was widely reported in South Korea — where nationalists sometimes chafe at China’s assertions of power — but lauded as a spirited and refreshing performance on Chinese social media.

The Chinese team ended up defeating the South Koreans.
