Keyshia Cole's Mom Frankie Dead at 61, Suffered Overdose on Birthday

TMZ 19 July, 2021 - 06:10pm

The R&B singer's brother, Sam, tells us ... Frankie overdosed at her Oakland home Sunday ... the same day she was celebrating her born day, when she apparently took drugs while partying -- relapsing on what we're told was a long, hard-fought journey to sobriety.

Sam says he was checking in with Frankie daily, trying to help her stay clean ... a well-documented battle that Keyshia and co. had captured and shared publicly in recent years ... via television, social media and other channels.

Sam also says the family wants the world to remember Frankie as someone who loved her kids, and who wanted her children to be together ... despite their turbulent history.

Keyshia was given up by Frankie and her biological father, Virgil Hunter, for adoption at a very young age -- she ended up being raised by family friends ... and reunited with her birth parents later in life as an adult -- after she'd hit it big on the music scene.

Their family dynamic is one Keyshia actually filmed for reality TV on BET -- featuring a few different shows -- with the main series being "Keyshia Cole My New Life" ... on which Frankie cameoed often, and where the mother and daughter duo shared many heart-to-hearts.

Keyshia was also quite vocal on her mother's addiction struggles ... keeping tabs on her checking into rehab and encouraging her to stay on the straight and narrow -- posting photos and videos of her mom before her time at a facility and cheering on her success.

As of March of last year, Frankie hit a huge benchmark ... staying 60 days sober, something her daughter was proud to share with her IG fans and followers. She has yet to comment on her mother's death.

Keyshia Cole's Mom, Frankie Lons, Has Passed Away

Essence 19 July, 2021 - 06:10pm

News of her death surfaced on Monday morning (July 19). Cole’s younger sister, Elite, who appeared on The Way It Is as well, confirmed the sad news. She took to her InstaStories to write, “Worse pain ever….to see my mama in a body bag on her birthday! My heart so f–kin broke.”

According to TMZ, who spoke to Cole’s brother Sam, Lons relapsed and overdosed at her home on Sunday while celebrating her birthday.

Last year, Cole shared that Lons, who struggled with drugs off and on, checked into rehab and in February would have been there for 30 days. She was hopeful that her mom would finally be able to stay sober and be as healthy as possible for her children.

“Do you believe in the power of love?” she wrote alongside a photo of her next to her mom.”What about lack thereof? 50/50 There’s strength in knowing there’s something or someone you can always lean back on. Someone to catch u when u fall. I’ve been being strong for you, hoping I’ll get a chance to feel that feeling from you.”

Cole and her older sister, Neffeteria, haven’t spoken publicly on the news. During Cole’s latest reality series on BET, Keyshia Cole My New Life in 2019, the singer and Lons had a conversation about the possibility of her not being around, which Cole said, understandably, alarmed her.

“Some things happen out there in the streets and it scares a child, the thought,” Cole said.

“One day chicken the next day feathers. If I die today you’re going to move on and you’ve got to make it. You’ve got to live for Keyshia,” Lons replied. “You have to live for you and your family not nobody else. You don’t have to do nothin’ but die and pay taxes, but you have to move on if anything happens to me. At the end of the day you’ll see me later. Up there.”

She added, “I’m a be always where you can find me. Even when God calls me. A mother’s love will always protect you.”

Early Monday morning, Cole's sister Elite Noel confirmed that her mother Frankie had died on her birthday of an overdose after suffering from drug addiction for years.

"Worse [sic] pain ever.... to see my mama in a body bag on her birthday!" she wrote. "My heart so f—ing broke." Their brother also told TMZ Lons had relapsed at her Oakland, California home.

Lons had marked two months of sobriety back in March, TMZ reported. Cole, 39, has yet to make a public statement about her mother's death.

Back in 2018, Cole opened up about what it's like to have her mom face addiction.

"This was 2½ years ago. Every time my mom relapse, it breaks my heart more than it's already been broken," she wrote. "I'm hoping, if any of u are dealing with a family member who's battling with drug addiction, that you, yourself are learning how to cope with the struggle of it all."

R&B Singer Keyshia Cole's Mother Frankie Lons Dead After Overdosing On Her 61st Birthday

Radar Online 19 July, 2021 - 06:10pm

Jul. 19 2021, Published 11:47 a.m. ET

Keyshia Cole's mother, Frankie Lons, has reportedly passed away after suffering an apparent overdose while celebrating her 61st birthday.

As fans of the R&B singer know, Frankie has struggled with addiction for decades. Parts of it were even documented on television programs, including the BET realty series, Keyshia Cole: My New Life.

Keyshia's brother reportedly said Frankie overdosed on Sunday at her home in Oakland, California, after she is believed to have taken drugs while partying in celebration of turning the big six-one.

He said he had been checking in on her daily in an attempt to help her stay clean and sober, and that he wanted to make sure the world remembered Frankie for being someone who loved her kids and wanted them to be together, despite their strained relationships in the past.

Keyshia's parents – Frankie and Virgil Hunter – gave her up for adoption when she was very young. She was raised by family friends.

After she made it big in the music industry, however, she reconnected with her mom, and the two were able to reconcile over the years.

Since then, Keyshia's maintained a close watch on Frankie by making sure she went to rehab and encouraging her to stay on the straight and narrow.

In addition to the heart-to-heart conversations they shared on the singer's BET shows, Cole also documented her mom's addiction ups and downs on social media.

"This was 2 1/2 years ago. Every time my mom relapse, it breaks my heart more than it's already been broken," the singer captioned an Instagram video she posted in August of 2018. "I'm hoping, if any of u are dealing with a family member who's battling with drug addiction, that you, yourself are learning how to cope with the struggle of it all. And all the pain it brings to see a loved one constantly relapsing. See them go back to the streets Because that's what they're used to, or would rather be. I really miss you! And will always love u #FrankTheBank."

The singer has yet to comment on the news of her mom's reported passing.

The biological mother of R&B singer Keyshia Cole has reportedly died. According to TMZ, Frankie Lons suffered a fatal drug overdose at her Oakland home on Sunday (July 18), her 61st birthday.

Lons had struggled with addiction issues for most of her life and had periods of sobriety, but they never lasted. Cole’s brother Sam says she relapsed as she was partying in honor of another revolution around the sun and sadly didn’t recover.

Like most families who wrestle with an addict, Sam tried to keep his mother clean and would check on her every day. Despite Cole’s tumultuous past with her mother, Sam says he truly loved her.

Lons and Keyshia Cole’s biological father Virgil Hunter gave Cole up for adoption when she was young. She was raised by close family friends and ultimately reunited with her biological parents after she’d found success as an artist. Their relationship was often a topic on the short-lived BET reality show Keyshia Cole: My New Life in which they’d have intensely personal conversations.

Singer Keyshia Cole, 39, and her loved ones are in mourning following the tragic death of her mother, Frankie Lons. Keyshia’s brother Sam confirmed to TMZ that Frankie died of a drug overdose at her Oakland, California home on Sunday, July 18, which was her 61st birthday. Frankie was celebrating her birthday at the residence when she took the drugs after decades of struggling with addiction, Sam told TMZ.

Keyshia’s sister, Elite Noel, also confirmed their mother’s passing on her Instagram Stories on Monday. “Worse pain ever….. to see my mama in a body bag on her birthday! My heart so f***in broke,” Elite wrote. Keyshia has not yet commented on her mother’s tragic death.

Keyshia was given up for adoption at age 2 by Frankie and her father, boxing trainer Virgil Hunter. The “Never” singer had been open about her mother’s struggles.
