The delta variant of COVID-19 has caused a spike in new cases in Pennsylvania and nationwide, and some retail chains are once again asking employees and customers to mask up.
Following the CDC’s announcement of new guidelines that even vaccinated people wear masks indoors, many businesses are returning to those policies. Those guidelines specify that the indoor masks for vaccinated people are called for in areas of substantial spread or worse. And according to this week’s numbers, that includes all of Dauphin, Cumberland, York, Lancaster, Lebanon and Adams counties.
People who have not been vaccinated are still asked to wear masks at most establishments.
Some retailers are requiring employees to wear masks, while encouraging - but not requiring - customers to wear masks.
Here’s a look at some major retailers in our area, and their current mask policies:
Walmart: requires masks for employees, even if vaccinated, and recommends them for all customers
Target: requires masks for employees in areas of substantial or high spread, recommends them for all customers
Costco: masks are not required for vaccinated staff or customers, but still recommends anyone unvaccinated wear masks
Lowe’s: requires masks for all employees while indoors and while working at a customer’s home or business, and recommends them for customers
Wegmans: The grocery chain is requiring employees to wear masks and asking all customers to wear masks, regardless of vaccination status.
Whole Foods: masks are not required for vaccinated staff or customers, but still recommends masks for anyone unvaccinated
Walgreens: masks are not required for vaccinated customers, but still required for employees and recommended for unvaccinated customers
Best Buy: masks are not required for vaccinated staff or customers, but still required for unvaccinated staff and customers
Aldi: masks are not required for vaccinated staff or customers, but still required for anyone unvaccinated
Kohls: masks are not required for vaccinated customers, but they are required for staff and unvaccinated customers
McDonald’s: The fast food giant is requiring employees and customers to wear masks in restaurants in areas of high or substantial transmission, regardless of vaccination status.
Starbucks: All employees are required to wear masks starting today and customers are encouraged to wear masks.
BJ’s Wholesale Club: All employees must wear masks in areas of high or substantial transmission, while all shoppers in those areas are asked to wear masks.

Lewis County’s transmission rate has already been designated substantial. St.Lawrence County’s is still listed as moderate.
The CDC recommends that even fully vaccinated people wear masks indoors in areas with substantial risk of transmission.
Legislature chair Scott Gray says people should follow CDC guidance, but the county will not formally mandate anything.
He says this presents another reason why it’s important to get vaccinated.
