If you need to take a moment to process everything that went down in Chicago P.D.’s Season 9 premiere, we don’t blame you!

Picking up where we left off in the finale, Wednesday’s episode, titled “Closure,” saw Burgess’ life hanging in the balance while Intelligence searched for her kidnapper, and Upton and Voight covering their tracks after killing said suspect.

The good news is that Burgess pulled through in the end. However, Upton will need to find a way to “make peace with the fact that you’re never gonna be able to make peace” after what went down with Roy, as Voight succinctly put it.

Oh yeah, those who were rooting for Upton and Halstead to take things to the next level finally got their wish — the Intelligence detectives are officially engaged! The big moment came at the end of the hour, with Halstead both accepting Upton’s proposal and then formally asking her on bended knee because he’s old-fashioned.

This season, Upton will struggle with keeping up the lie about what really happened to Roy. There’s an uncomfortable moment in “Closure” where Burgess asks Upton if they found the guy who ambushed her, and Upton stiffly tells her he got away. “It’s eating away at her,” Tracy Spiridakos shares, “and Halstead starts to notice that something’s off with her and continues to ask.”

An upcoming episode will explore the idea of Halstead potentially finding out the truth, which might not be best thing for the newly engaged couple. “They very much deeply care for each other, and this whole thing is definitely going to affect their dynamic,” she adds. “But I do think that they’re in it for the long haul. I don’t know of a wedding anytime soon, but I can see that happening at some point.”

We may not know when or if an “Upstead” wedding is happening, but Soffer has confirmed that the third episode of the season will delve into Halstead’s military background and feature a character from his past. “There’s a clearer picture as to why Jay doesn’t want to talk about his time in the Army,” he teases.

Although the team was able to get to Burgess in time, her life was left hanging in the balance as the season ended leaving her fate unknown.

In addition to the question marks surrounding Burgess’s fate, the finale also dropped a major bombshell on Upstead fans when Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) asked Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) to marry her in an impassioned moment.

Is a Wedding Coming On 'Chicago P.D.'? Jesse Lee Soffer Says ...

Us Weekly 22 September, 2021 - 10:01pm

Can Jay and Hailey really make it work? During the season 8 premiere, Jesse Lee Soffer‘s character proposed back to Upton (Tracy Spiradakos) — but it doesn’t mean a wedding is necessarily in the cards. In fact, he’s not even sure Jay will buy a ring.

“I actually don’t have the answer to that, because look, you know, he proposes and all is well, until he starts going, ‘Wait a second, something’s wrong,'” Soffer, 37, told Us Weekly exclusively. “And obviously, Hailey’s guilt and the shame of what happened and keeping the secret and all this stuff, it’s going to eat at her. Obviously, Jay’s going to see that. So who knows what happens to that proposal?”

Although the secret will create “trust issues” between the two, it will also give audiences a chance to get to know another side of Halstead.

“It made sense [that he proposed]. I appreciated it,” the Emmy nominee said. “If these feelings are genuine and I feel the same way then let me take some ownership and let me do it right, and I’ll own this too. He proposes right back and he makes it legitimate. … We’ve never seen Jay like that. He’s a pretty stoic character most of the time, so to see him vulnerable or to see him on the edges of vulnerability, I think it’s probably fun for the fans.”

He noted that with such “dark” content on the show, the lighter moments are necessary — and it’s nice to be able to “break out of the intensity” sometimes.

“It is [fun for me],” Soffer added. “There are some cute scenes in a couple of the episodes in the beginning of the season.”

That said, he hasn’t heard anything about a wedding just yet. When Us joked that it always seemed more likely for Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) to be the first one in the unit to get married, Soffer couldn’t help but agree.

“That makes sense! It still could be,” the New York native said with a laugh. “We don’t actually know it’s still, totally could be.”

As for Hailey and Voight’s secret, it won’t last forever.

“They obviously love each other very much, and I think after what happens at the end of season 8, she’s reaching out for kind of the one stable thing, the one good thing,” the former soap star noted. “Eventually Jay does start to put it together.”

Chicago PD spoilers: Does Kim Burgess die in the season 9 premiere?

One Chicago Center 22 September, 2021 - 06:45pm

CHICAGO P.D. -- "Trouble Dolls" Episode 813 -- Pictured: Marina Squerciati as Kim Burgess -- (Photo by: Lori Allen/NBC)

Chicago PD shocked fans during last season’s finale. Not only was fan favorite Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) kidnapped by an assailant, she was subsequently shot and left for dead.

As the series returns for its season 9 premiere, the most pressing question is Burgess’s health, and whether she’ll be able to pull through her serious injuries.

The episode begins with the PD team talking to Burgess’s doctor. He clarifies that she made it through the surgery successfully and is in stable condition, but makes it abundantly clear that she’s not out of the woods yet. “She suffered extensive injuries,” the doctor adds. “There’s considerable internal trauma. So, we all will just need to wait.”

The uncertainty of Burgess’s condition puts a considerable strain on the rest of the team. Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger), Burgess’s former flame, goes as far as to confront the doctor and demand that he be given a straight answer.

Later in the episode, Ruzek pulls the doctor aside and asks whether Burgess will have to be placed on life support. Once more, there are no answers. The doctor explains that life support is a possibility, but clarifies that it’s still “too early” to tell.

Thankfully, Burgess’s condition seems to improve by the end of the episode. Her daughter Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) is brought in to visit her, and the reunion provides arguably the most solace Burgess has had since the shooting. Burgess is definitely on the mend, but it remains to be seen how much she’s going to have to endure before she’s back to normal.

The increased involvement of Ruzek has Chicago PD fans theorizing that the pair could get back together, or at the very least that Ruzek could help Burgess through her physical recovery. It’s a theory that’s gained even more traction in the wake of Squerciati’s interview with Hello Magazine. When asked about her character’s future with Ruzek, she hinted at the possibility of reconciliation. “Makayla and Kim have a home, and I think Adam is ready to be a part of that,” the actress added.

Chicago PD spoilers: Do Jay and Hailey get engaged in the season 9 premiere?

One Chicago Center 22 September, 2021 - 06:26pm

CHICAGO P.D. -- "The Other Side" Episode 816 -- Pictured: (l-r) Jesse Lee Soffer as Jay Halstead, Tracy Spiridakos as Hailey -- (Photo by: Lori Allen/NBC)

Chicago PD had a lot to answer for after the devastating season 8 finale. There was the possibility that Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) would die as a result of her gunshot wounds, and of course, the promise that Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) would throw caution to the wind and get engaged.

The Burgess subplot took precedent during the season 9 premiere, but the Jay and Hailey romance bookended the episode, providing a nice counterbalance to the criminal investigation.

As the anticipation for Jay and Hailey’s engagement grew between seasons, fans wondered whether the Chicago PD showrunners would deliver during the premiere or merely tease it and extend it throughout season 9. Not only did the showrunners deliver, but they had the couple get engaged twice!

The episode, titled, opens with Hailey bearing her soul to a concerned Jay. She’s still reeling from aftermath of Burgess’s shooting, and she tells Jay that she wants to start a new chapter (“a better chapter”) of their lives together. She proposes to Jay, and while the latter is visibly touched, there’s a hesitance in his voice that doesn’t get resolved until the end of episode.

Hailey’s disillusionment has been an underlying theme since she joined the force, but watching Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) torture a suspect in the season 8 finale seemingly pushed her over the edge. It shook her confidence in the veteran cop, and seemingly sped up her decision to propose to Jay and start a family.

This theme comes back around in the final scene, where Jay asks why Hailey proposed, and she points to her desire for stability and normalcy. Hailey admits that Burgess’s shooting (and Voight’s actions) influenced her, but asserts that maybe it took a tragedy for her to work up the courage to say how she really felt. The moment of transparency bonds the couple, and they embrace.

In a nice moment of levity, Jay gets on his knees and proposes a second time. When Hailey reminds him that she already did so, Jay asserts that he’s “old fashioned” and asks her to accept his proposal in return. She naturally does, and the season 9 premiere goes out on a quietly triumphant note.

Chicago PD Season 9: Burgess returns to action in exclusive episode 2 photo

One Chicago Center 22 September, 2021 - 06:01pm

CHICAGO P.D. -- Season: 9 -- Pictured: Marina Squerciati as Kim Burgess -- (Photo by: Art Streiber/NBC)

If there is one thing the One Chicago dramas do better than any other franchise around, it’s crafting dramatic cliffhangers which leave fans on the edge of their seats and with countless questions to puzzle. The One Chicago writing team’s ability to leave us wanting more was once again on full display this May as the season finales of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD capped off the seasons with a wave of shocking cliffhangers to end their respective seasons.

Much like its sister series Chicago Fire, Chicago PD‘s biggest cliffhanger came in the form of a question over whether one of the show’s beloved cast members would soon be departing the show after being thrust into a life-or-death situation.

We’re, of course, referring to Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) who was last seen in critical condition and recovering at Chicago Med after being abducted, shot, then left for dead by a pair of dangerous criminals.

Although season 8 ended with revealing Kim had made it to Med in time and it was hinted that she should make a full recovery, fans have been anxious to know whether Kim will indeed pull through.

Burgess fans can breathe a major sigh of relief! Although Kim spent most of the season 9 premiere unconscious and fighting for her life at Med, in the back half of the episode Kim finally came and is on a path to a full recovery.

Watch One Chicago on fuboTV: Watch over 67 live sports and entertainment channels with a 7-day FREE trial!

Given how touch and go things were, there was definitely a reason for concern over whether Kim wouldn’t survive. Fortunately, Kim pulled through, and judging by our exclusive first look at the upcoming second episode of the season it seems she’s going to be back on her feet and on the job far sooner than fans might anticipate!

After her brush with death, Burgess finally returns to action in the second hour of the season and appears to waste no time in diving right back into work. In fact, it seems she might already be gearing up for her first undercover role since her accident!

In One Chicago Center’s exclusive sneak peek at season 9, episode 2, “Rage,” (airing Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 10/9c), Kim appears to return to the field in helping the Intelligence team to work their latest case. Given Kim’s expression, untidy hair and the fact that she’s drawn her gun, something tells us Kim will get her guy.

CHICAGO P.D. — “Rage” Episode 902 — Pictured: Marina Squerciati as Kim Burgess — (Photo by: Lori Allen/NBC)

Although Burgess seems to have made a recovery from her physical injuries, it’s going to be interesting to see how the show explores her mental recovery as a brush with death as a new parent is sure to have some effects on Burgess’s storylines this season — at least, we’re hoping the writers will explore that journey.

Considering the official synopsis for the episode teases Voight (Jason Beghe) and Ruzek )Patrick Flueger) strategize to help Burgess, we have a feeling Kim might put on a brave face and it’s nice to know her team will be looking out for her best interest.
