Gillian Anderson is prepared to let nature take its course, as she’s officially done wearing bras, calling the undergarment “too uncomfortable.”

“I don’t wear a bra anymore. I can’t wear a bra. I’m sorry,” Anderson, 52, explained in an Instagram Live video Monday. “I don’t care if my breasts reach my belly button. I’m not wearing a bra, it’s just too f–king uncomfortable.”

The “Sex Education” actress was met praise from other women who’ve also disdainfully given up on the brassiere, especially after months of quarantining at home left the undergarment essentially useless.

“i never wear a bra and i get a lot of distasteful comments about it, so knowing gillian anderson doesn’t wear a bra anymore is an information most pleasing to me!” wrote one fan, with another adding, “if two time golden globe and emmy winning actress gillian anderson says no more bras, who are we to disagree,”

Anderson — who won an Emmy in 1997 for “The X-Files” — just landed her sixth Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown.”

She won a Golden Globe for the role in March, accepting her award with an American accent, to the shock of fans who only knew her for projects based in the UK.

“Just had my mind blown discovering @GillianA doesn’t actually have an English accent in real life,” wrote one fan of the Chicago-native, with another adding, “I feel so uncomfortable knowing Gillian Anderson is American and not British.”

Anderson honed her British accent while living in London for several years, and has said in the past that she often slips back and forth between accents.

“Even on the phone, my accent will change,” she told British newspaper The Telegraph in 2009.

Gillian Anderson says she's not wearing a bra anymore: 'I don't care if my breasts reach my belly button'

Yahoo Life 13 July, 2021 - 03:13pm

In a new Instagram Live, the X-Files alum revealed she’s no longer sporting the undergarment.

“I don’t wear a bra anymore. I can’t wear a bra. I’m sorry,” the actress, who stars in Netflix’s Sex Education and The Crown, explained in the video. “I don’t care if my breasts reach my belly button. I’m not wearing a bra, it’s just too f***ing uncomfortable.”

Many people applauded Anderson in the replies to the clip, which was posted to Twitter — and said they’re doing the same thing.

“I don't wear bras anymore,” one wrote. “I wear tank tops with the shelf bra. Much more comfortable.”

A third noted, “I agree—I haven’t worn one since I was 12, sooooo uncomfortable! Baggy shirts maybe, bras hard no!”

More and more people are breaking up with their bras, in fact. Just this week, The Cut’s Dayna Evans wrote about how while many people are resuming the activities they enjoyed in pre-pandemic life, their bras are not joining them on the journey. The reasons for skipping bras, she wrote, range from realizing just how uncomfortable they really are after a year or so of feeling like they had no reason to wear them, to discovering that they never served much of a purpose in the first place.

Back in March, InStyle declared that quarantine changed what kinds of bras people wanted to wear. In the second half of 2020, women's apparel was down 21 percent, but bra sales were up. The difference? It was comfier options like sports bras and bralettes leading the uptick, with underwire bra sales remaining down.

So, whether Anderson skips bras completely or opts for a less restrictive undergarment, it seems she has plenty of support whether she wants to cover her breasts or not.

The Crown's Johnny Lee Miller Copies Season 4's Best Casting Trick

Screen Rant 13 July, 2021 - 07:26am

While The Crown's casting announcements are generally greeted with enthusiastic nodding and widespread agreement, season 4 raised eyebrows when Gillian Anderson was confirmed as playing Margaret Thatcher. The controversial 1980s Conservative Prime Minister is known for miner's strikes, the Falklands war, and being the first female in parliament's top job. What Thatcher is most certainly not known for is being a sex symbol, which makes Anderson's casting all the more curious. Famous for The X-Files and Sex Education, Anderson was one of the 1990s' most successful and popular actresses - just not the one you'd pick for Iron Mags.

As The Crown season 5 moves into the 1990s, it's time for Thatcher to bow out and John Major to take center stage... and the casting department has done it again. Major will be played by Jonny Lee Miller, known for Sick Boy in Trainspotting and Sherlock Holmes in Elementary. Just like Gillian Anderson, Miller is a talented, respected actor with a versatile resume. Also like Anderson, he bears precious little resemblance to the politician he'll be portraying in The Crown. While physical appearance isn't the be-all-end-all of casting, it would perhaps be fair to suggest that Margaret Thatcher and John Major aren't politicians you'd immediately describe as glamorous. Gillian Anderson and Jonny Lee Miller, on the other hand, are both classically good-looking folk with a certain degree of Hollywood style.

Whether the same will happen for Jonny Lee Miller in The Crown season 5 remains to be seen. Despite her divisive legacy, Margaret Thatcher is an icon of worldwide renown, and even viewers outside Britain have a general idea of her looks, voice and mannerisms. This is partly why the curveball casting of Gillian Anderson generated as much chatter as it did. John Major, however, left a far more moderate, subtle stamp on British politics. To a general international Netflix audience, Major is less well-known and, for that very reason, seeing Jonny Lee Miller play him won't necessarily bring the same shock and surprise of Gillian Anderson.

‘I don’t care if my breasts reach my belly button’: Gillian Anderson vows to stop wearing a bra

Yahoo News UK 13 July, 2021 - 05:44am

Speaking in an Instagram Live Q+A to her 1.8m followers on Monday, The Crown star explained how she had become “so lazy”.

“I don’t wear a bra anymore,” she declared, speaking to the camera from her living room in Atlanta.

“I can’t wear a bra. I can’t. I’m sorry, there’s no... I don’t care if I reach my belly button... my breasts reach my belly button. I’m not wearing a bra anymore.

The revelation has sparked widespread praise on Twitter, with a clip of Anderson garnering more than 124,000 views and many comments from women claiming that they too had stopped wearing a bra.

“I don’t wear bras anymore. I wear tank tops with the shelf bra. Much more comfortable,” wrote one person.

Another added: “If two-time Golden Globe and Emmy winning actress Gillian Anderson says no more bras, who are we to disagree?”

The Free The Nipple campaign has been gaining traction on social media for some years but liberation from bras reached new heights during lockdown when many women working from home prioritised comfort when it came to their clothing choices.

A feature of the Q+A was Anderson’s dog, Stella, whom she purchased in December of last year.

The actor poked fun at the interest surrounding her then-recent breakup with The Crown creator Peter Morgan by introducing her new puppy as her “girlfriend” on Twitter.

The actor and Morgan split the previous week after four years together.

“Meet my new gf Stella [sic],” Anderson tweeted alongside a photograph of herself cuddling the chocolate brown puppy while reclining on a sofa.

Anderson and Morgan worked together on The Crown, with Morgan as its writer while Anderson took on the role of Margaret Thatcher.

Anderson spoke about what it was like to work with her then-partner in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.

Recalling being on set in full costume, she said: “I smiled at [Morgan], as me, Gillian, smiling at her boyfriend, and he said, ‘This is Thatcher! This smile is Thatcher!’... And I’m like, no! This smile is me!’”

Competing in the long jump, Johnson-Thompson managed a modest, by her standards, best attempt of 6.10 metres to finish in eighth place, but she emerged healthy and knowing what she now needs to do in the lead-up to her event.
