Did the good witch get Cancelled?

'Good Witch' Series Finale Recap — Cancelled at Hallmark, No Season 8. TVLine. tvline.com'Good Witch' Series Finale Recap — Cancelled at Hallmark, No Season 8

Warning: Spoilers ahead from Hallmark Channel’s Good Witch series finale.

After seven seasons, Cassie Nightingale (Catherine Bell) and the rest of the Good Witch gang said a bittersweet goodbye as the emotional series finale aired on Hallmark Channel on Sunday night.

And while fans may be sad that the show is ending, there’s a lot to celebrate yet—especially those who were shipping #TeamJoey. Not only did Zoey (Kyana Teresa) and Joy (Katherine Barrell) share a sweet kiss tonight, it’s the first same-sex kiss on a Hallmark original series.

Joy and Zoey have found their happily ever after! ❤️🎀 🙌 #Goodies, how overjoyed are you to see them happy? #GoodWitch pic.twitter.com/dSB9IAoGIJ

More on that after diving into the adventures of the Merriwick cousins—Cassie, Joy, and Abigail (Sarah Power)—who are panicked while trying to figure out what element they’re missing to power the amulet they need to have a fighting chance of beating the mysterious force putting their legacy at risk. After some dream searching, they realize what they need is dirt and that finally puts them on the path of success as the clock inches closer towards midnight.

The trio steps outside ready for war but they know someone and something is missing.

Bailee Madison, who portrayed Cassie’s daughter Grace for the first five seasons, did not return for the finale though Grace did call out for her mother briefly as the Merriwick’s hurriedly figured out their next move while under the red-haloed moon.

Just as the trio begins to lose hope, Joy sees something sparkling on the ground that are pieces from Patience’s amulet. “Fortune must’ve buried it,” Cassie said as she put together the old and new amulet together giving her combined powers to overcome the evil forces.

That did the trick and all was good in the land, leaving everyone ready to celebrate Adam’s (Scott Cavalheiro) wedding to Stephanie (Kylee Evans). After the tearful ceremony, Adam asks his new bride if he can tag along to Paris so they can begin their new journey together. Her gleeful “yes” leads everyone to the dance floor including love birds Cassie and her beloved husband Sam (James Denton). It’s not long before the lovebirds are all alone giving Sam the perfect opportunity to get on one knee.

“Do I have your permission to take you around the world?” he asks before admitting he’s looking to change his workaholic ways.

“I don’t want to look back on our life together and have any regrets,” he continued. “And the biggest one would be if I didn’t spend enough time with you.”

Now back to that special connection between Zoey and Joy that really sparked brightly after the former confessed to the latter that she’d learned how to salsa from Sam as part of a grand gesture towards her. The pair looked intently into each other’s eyes while slaying the dance floor before a kiss sealed the deal.

The biggest question the show will leave in its wake is how #TeamJoey is doing after stepping off the dance floor and out into the real world smitten.

For anyone that was worried about Tom (Paul Miller)—especially poor Martha (Catherine Disher), he’s going to be ok.

The episode wraps as Cassie and Sam bid adieu to their loved ones with only adventures ahead. This could also be a great opportunity for more Good Witch films or a spin-off series should they choose to continue this or any other storylines.

A rep told Deadline on July 9th there are talks happening behind the scenes though no immediate plans for a new movie have been solidified.

“Catherine Bell, James Denton, and Katherine Barrell, among others, are members of the Hallmark Channel family, and we are in discussions on future projects,” they said.

I am so disappointed that Good Witch ia canceled. In this crazy world I have looked forward to this show on Sunday night. Very poor decision!! Very poor!!! Not much really “good” tv programs on …this was one of them!!!

I am very disappointed that they have canceled the Good Witch. I look forward to the show and enjoy watching it very much. I’m sure there are many people that feel the same. Poor choice that has been made. Especially during all that’s going on today this show is a nice escape! So disappointing!!!

I agree with you Trudy. There is too much violence on TV these days. I’m sad that this show has ended as well, I would always make sure I was home to watch it. Never missed an episode since the beginning. Bad move Hallmark. Wish another channel would pick it up.

Was to air and tv kept saying would be on and then, airing “NEXT”, and a different show came on.FRUSTRATING!

I have watched from the very beginning .The ending was so lame, not connecting the people to their business they run. Cassie store,The flower store, and the worst that he is going to run the Cafe and the guest house at the same time ,Absolutely wrong!

I agree. They have almost half of the main characters leaving George to run bistro and grey house. What about the flower shop and bell book and candle, and Sam’s patients? I feel they rushed it. Hopefully we will get at least one more movie to fix it

While I am very sad to see this show come to an end I can only be grateful to have ever had the pleasure of being a long time fan. I hope they can at least continue with movies. Hallmark found a way to bring joy to so many homes. I am sad to loose it.

I agree! Botched relationship with Abigail and Donovan. Swept it under the rug. And all the other wonderful characters. What a blah ending to a very good series. Ugh.

Agreed , the last episode was so confusing all rushed and Cassie seemed not like her at the end. I think they should have kept the season 7 with small problems to solve by “magic” like cassie used to do at the store . While weaving the amulet story. I think they lost me last season by the end and this season was lackluster. Hope they have a movie to end it right .

'Good Witch' Stars & Fans React to Series Finale and THAT Kiss

GoodHousekeeping.com 26 July, 2021 - 10:10am

Good Witch stars Kat Barrell and Kyana Teresa made history on Sunday when their characters became the first LGBTQ couple to share a kiss on a Hallmark Channel original series.

While a kiss between a same-sex couple has previously happened in a Hallmark original movie (2020’s The Christmas House), this marked the first instance in a series. Not only that, but Barrell and Teresa’s characters, Joy and Zoey, are also the first LGBTQ couple to be featured in a Hallmark series.

The two stars both took to social media following the episode to share their thoughts and respond to the overwhelming fan reaction. “If you’re not making history, you’re not doing it right,” Teresa tweeted. “Thank you to everyone to [sic] helped this story become a reality and to everyone who rallied for it until the very end and beyond. It means more to me than you’ll ever know.”

— Kyana Teresa (@KyanaTeresa) July 26, 2021

Barrell, who was also part of a same-sex pairing in Syfy’s Wynonna Earp, wrote, “Thank you to each and every #GoodEarper who joined us on this journey and all the #Goodies who welcomed us!! Positive Representation changes lives!! Beyond proud of the stories we told on #GoodWitch this season.”

The two actresses also had high praise for one another. “You fill the world with positivity and beauty everywhere you go! You have the most gracious heart and I will treasure our time spent playing these characters,” Barrell told Teresa. Meanwhile, Teresa referred to Barrell as “the most kind & generous person Ive ever had the pleasure to share the screen with. This experience has changed my life for so many reasons and ur support has made all the difference.”

Fan response was even bigger, with many viewers ecstatic to see representation on Hallmark, a channel that hasn’t always had the best track record with LGBTQ visibility. In 2019, the channel’s parent company Crown Media Family Networks caved to pressure from conservative groups and pulled commercials featuring a kiss between two brides. The network later reversed the decision following backlash.

Good Witch star Catherine Bell shared a video on Twitter featuring herself and her fellow cast members thanking the fans for their continued support. The fantasy comedy-drama premiered in 2015 and ran for seven seasons.

Good Witch Fans Celebrate Historic LGBTQ Kiss for a Hallmark Series

TVLine 25 July, 2021 - 09:49pm

Something magical (and longggg overdue) occurred on Hallmark Channel this Sunday night.

During Good Witch‘s series finale, Joy (played by Wynonna Earp‘s Kat Barrell) and Zoey (played by Shadowhunters‘ Kyana Teresa) shared the first-ever kiss between an LGBTQ couple on a Hallmark Channel original series. (In fact, #TeamJoey also represented the first LGBTQ couple featured in a Hallmark series.)

The key qualification here is series; the Hallmark original movie The Christmas House, which aired in November 2020, famously featured a kiss between two men, played by Mean Girls‘ Jonathan Bennett and Aurora Teagarden Mysteries‘ Brad Harder, who also represented Hallmark’s first married gay couple.)

If you’re not making history, you’re not doing it right,” Teresa, who plays Zoey, shared on Instagram. “Thank you to everyone to helped this story become a reality and to everyone who rallied for it until the very end and beyond. It means more to me than you’ll ever know.”

Good Witch‘s same-sex kiss marks a major step forward for Hallmark Channel parent company Crown Media Family Networks, which in December 2019 caved to pressure from conservative groups and pulled commercials that featured a kiss between two brides. Following a firestorm of controversy — the decision drew ire from Hallmark movie vets Hilarie Burton and Bridget Regan, along with other celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres — Crown Media reinstated the ads. At the time of the reversal, Hallmark Cards president and CEO Mike Perry called the initial choice to remove the ads “the wrong decision,” adding, “we are truly sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused.” (Soon after, Crown Media Family Networks CEO Bill Abbott left the company.)

Check out some of Twitter’s reactions to #TeamJoey’s kiss, tagging Barrell and Teresa and often coming from those who also enjoyed Barrell as half of the LGBTQ-progressive Syfy series Wynonna Earp‘s #WayHaught pairing:

You made history tonight!!! #Goodies #GoodEarpers #GoodWitch #TeamJoey

Yasssss! History made. I'm so proud @KyanaTeresa and @KatBarrell thank you! #GoodEarpers #Goodies #TeamJoey #GoodWitch

— Earper Marine (Heather D) (@EarperMarine) July 26, 2021

Sunday’s farewell event saw Joy’s ex-girlfriend Charlotte arrive in Middleton, causing friction with new love interest Zoey. Worried that she was going to lose Joy, Zoey enlisted Sam for an impromptu salsa lesson, and surprised Joy when they returned home from Stephanie and Adam’s wedding. The couple shared a kiss, and all was forgiven. (For a complete recap, click here.)

While Joy was introduced during Good Witch‘s sixth season, Zoey was not added until early in Season 7, when the big-city firefighter moved to Middleton and fell for Cassie’s cousin.

Teresa also hinted at Joy and Zoey’s kiss, adding: “I will say that fans should be very excited for this finale.” Meanwhile, in an Instagram post, she wrote, “Let’s give them something to remember us by.”

I cherished every moment of the Team Joey storyline. Joy and Zoey shared such a playful, tender and romantic relationship that warmed my heart. Looking forward to seeing the immensely beautiful and talented Kat Barrell & Kyana Teresa in many more upcoming Hallmark productions. Love these ladies!

The people over at One Million Moms are going to go berserk

They were cute couple. Seems like Hallmark learned their lesson after that commercial controversy and are trying to make up for it

…this isn’t historic. Hallmark having their first gay kiss in 2021 being called historic is like saying a school desegregating in 1983 is historic. If anything it shows how backwards and bigoted the network is.

Just because it arrived later than it should doesn’t strip it of being a historic moment. Honestly most historic events happen a lot later than they should have. That’s what makes them so important in a lot of ways.

You know lesbians can exist outside of fetishism right? This kiss still matters. And as the article pointed out they already had a male kiss last year.

Apparently you’ve missed the recent Hallmark movies with m|m romances (yes, including kisses and cuddles!) I applaud Hallmark for venturing forward in the right direction despite being countered by so many of their ultra conservative aka narrow minded viewers with antiquated beliefs. Of course, the delicious (perhaps comical) aspect is that so very many of Hallmark’s leading men and women are out and proud in their real lives. To boycott their channel appearances would certainly leave a vast, empty programming landscape!

Ratings tanked for this last season of The Good Witch for a number of reasons. In my opinion, the major problem was that the show was no longer was a refuge from the issues and problems we deal with in daily life. Like it or not, though, the lesbian romance turned off some viewers who describe themselves as “family friendly”. The relationship came in for criticism on various online forums but we don’t know if that really made a difference in the ratings.

Please know that I was supporting anti-discrimination measures protecting gays over forty years ago long before it was popular to do so. I also support gay marriage.

Half the regular casts of Hallmark movies are going beserk right now!

‘Good Witch’ Series Finale Review & Recap: Goodbyes Are Bittersweet

Heavy.com 25 July, 2021 - 09:37pm

The series finale of “Good Witch” has just aired on The Hallmark Channel. And while it had its ups and its down, the finale was overall a beautiful way to conclude the series.

Of course, the most captivating characters are Cassie (Catherine Bell) and Sam (James Denton), as they conclude seven seasons together. But each actor brings their own beautiful conclusion to their storyline.

This is a recap and a review of the finale.

As the episode begins, Cassie is recovering in the hospital after passing out at the end of last week’s episode, and Joy and Abigail are getting checked out too. Sam assures them there’s nothing wrong with them medically, but they should go home and make that amulet anyway. Cassie whips up a tea to help point Joy’s dream in the right direction so she can figure out the exact ingredients used to make the original amulets.

The tea works, and Joy dreams the exact recipe for the amulet.

It really feels like “Good Witch” is delving much deeper into magic than in any of the other recent seasons. Last week, they referred to themselves as witches for the very first time. And off and on throughout the season, we’ve seen stronger displays of magical power than we’ve seen in the series in a long time. The finale wasn’t any exception.

Meanwhile, Stephanie’s flight was canceled so she gets one more day with Adam before she leaves for six months. It’s nice to see Stephanie and Adam getting along again and not fighting their feelings for each other anymore. (I wonder if that really bad date that Stephanie had with her French teacher perhaps pushed her in Adam’s direction. Ever since the carnival episode when he made a brief appearance, we haven’t seen him on the show.)

While everyone’s gathering ingredients for the amulet, Joy meets up for lunch with Zoey and her long-lost dad. I’m really glad the show is bringing her dad back for the series finale. After his memory was wiped and he learned he had a daughter unexpectedly after 20-something years, it felt weird to have the story dropped so suddenly. I had expected him to basically move to Middleton temporarily to catch up on everything that he and Joy had missed. They both handled all that missing time a little too casually, so it was nice to see him back again for the finale.

Wow! 🥰 Donovan purchased tickets to Tuscany for their wedding! RT, if you love the idea of them eloping in Italy! #GoodWitch #Goodies pic.twitter.com/rGay4I3qz8

— Hallmark Channel (@hallmarkchannel) July 26, 2021

In the next scene, Donovan is having second thoughts about eloping with Abigail. He’s worried that things might change if Abigail loses her powers, and she assures him nothing will change. (But didn’t Abigail tell Joy last week that she still hasn’t told Donovan that she’s a witch? I kind of figured it was a joke, and now this seems to confirm that, especially considering all the work they did on breaking the curse!) Well, Donovan’s relieved to hear her assurances because he actually booked a minister to marry them in Tuscany in just a couple of days. :)  (I just want to point out that, considering how the episode ended, there weren’t any strong hints hear foreshadowing problems between these two.)

The Merriwick three can do anything together! #Goodies #GoodWitch ❤️❤️❤️ https://t.co/q2AAy0wync pic.twitter.com/FR7WxMhY9o

— Hallmark Channel (@hallmarkchannel) July 26, 2021

Although this episode was absolutely delightful, there were moments when I wondered about the timeframe of the episode and just how much was accomplished before it turned midnight for the red haloed moon. Much of the confusion with the timing is centered around creating the amulet itself.

As the Merriwick women are working on the formula for the amulet, their first attempt is unsuccessful because they have the wrong kind of wood. But George helps them figure out that the Orb of Intent’s pedestal is likely just what they’re looking for. When they get ready to use it, they find a message hidden inside that reads: “Shake the family tree.”

Their first attempt at making the amulet fails, when they try making it with molten gold.

Joy takes a break from this very important (and possibly life-altering) quest to have coffee with Charlotte. (This seems like an odd time to meet up with an ex-girlfriend, but I’ll give them grace since this is the finale.) Charlotte wants Joy back, and she apologizes for neglecting her while they were together five years ago. Since I’m pretty sure there’s no way Hallmark would break up #Joey in the series finale, I feel pretty confident that Joy’s going to turn her down. (And as it turns out, I was right!)

Zoey tells Joy that she has a decision to make! Who do you think Joy will choose? #GoodWitch #Goodies pic.twitter.com/232YSBdndF

— Hallmark Channel (@hallmarkchannel) July 26, 2021

There’s a quick resolution with Cassie’s foster brother deciding he wants to buy a home near Cassie and foster a child himself. I’m pretty sure this would have played out more in-depth if the show had been renewed. Instead, we just get a hopeful note to end his storyline on.

In the next scene, we see that they try making the amulet with silver, but the amulet breaks again. Cassie uses a form of magical hypnosis to take Joy back to her dream. Joy realizes that they were missing dirt from the satchels in their amulet recipe. This time, it works and the amulet doesn’t break after they fashion it.

It worked! The Merriwick three made an amulet! Let’s hope it is enough to save their magic. #GoodWitch #Goodies https://t.co/Ytbcl0F5CU pic.twitter.com/hHpukJjOlm

— Hallmark Channel (@hallmarkchannel) July 26, 2021

Zoey, meanwhile, is trying to figure out how to woo Joy back to her side after Charlotte declared her intention to get her back. So Sam agrees to give Zoey some quick salsa dance lessons so she can take Joy out dancing.

In the next scene, Stephanie and Adam are getting ready to say goodbye again as her plane ride approaches. He’s going to pick her up at 2 a.m. to take her to the airport.

The last amulet scene in the series was “spell-binding.” (See what I did there?) Back at Grey House where they’re making the amulet, it’s just 10 minutes until midnight. Sam and George are there to help, as Cassie puts on the amulet. The timing of this scene feels a little off to me. We just saw Sam teaching Zoey how to salsa dance, but now he’s at Grey House at 10 minutes to midnight. And a few scenes earlier, Cassie, Joy, and Abigail were in the exact same room making the amulet. I’m going to guess that quite a few hours have passed since they first made the amulet (giving it time to cool). But it was still a little jarring to hear George talk about how late it was in Middleton, based on the previous scenes.

But either way, it’s almost midnight and the Merriwick women don’t have much time left to figure out if this amulet is going to help them or not. We finally get to the scene from the trailer, where they’re walking outside under the light of the red haloed moon.

Cassie hears Grace call out to her and sees a silhouette, but it’s all an illusion. She barely misses a tree falling that would have hit her if she had moved toward Grace’s call. But instead, they find pieces of Fortune’s amulet buried where the tree had fallen. So they take the amulet and put it in the original setting, and now it works.

Cassie @reallyCB, Abigail @sarahspower, and Joy @KatBarrell saved their Merriwick magic! ✨#Goodies what do you think is going to happen next in Middleton? pic.twitter.com/0O9pt0G6H4

— Hallmark Channel (@hallmarkchannel) July 26, 2021

In a scene that reminded me a bit of old-school “Charmed,” the three Merriwick women hold hands and the amulet glows around Cassie’s neck. And just like that, the moon goes away. Cassie immediately has a premonition of Abigail’s elopement, and they realize they all have their powers back again.

With the red haloed moon issue behind them, we have about 20 minutes left to wrap everything up. And surprise! It’s Stephanie getting married, not Abigail. That one threw me for a loop, as I’m sure it did many viewers. I kind of wish they explained what happened before the wedding, so I wasn’t so distracted. But it did provide for momentary confusion that ropes the viewers back into the episode.

Adam is going to go to Paris with Stephanie! ❤️ RT, if you are excited for the happy couple to begin their journey in Paris together. 🇫🇷 #GoodWitch #Goodies pic.twitter.com/ylqW3MitWO

They explain after the wedding that Stephanie missed her flight again when their car broke down. They realized they didn’t want to be separated again without being married. So that’s sweet! And Adam decided to be with Stephanie for six months while she’s in Paris, so they’re not apart.

The scene after their wedding is also endearing. We get to see how all the couples are happy together now. Samantha and George, Martha and Tom, and Sam and Cassie.

Wow! 🤩 Zoey and Joy look beautiful and we can see that those dance lessons really paid off! 💃💃 #Goodies, how much are you loving this beautiful moment between Joy and Zoey? #Goodies #GoodWitch pic.twitter.com/FDC5iUBi2E

Zoey shows up for the wedding, and it looks like she and Joy are going to be OK too.

But Donovan’s troubled. He’s impressed that Adam’s spending six months with Stephanie, and it’s made Donovan realize that they’re never going to put their marriage ahead of their career dreams. And he’s right. Neither wants to compromise for the other’s dream.

After the wedding, Sam gets on one knee and asks Cassie for permission to take her around the world. He admits that she was right; he’s been a workaholic and he doesn’t want to look back on their life together with any regrets. They really are the sweetest couple.

Cassie and Joy are worried about Abigail, but it looks like she’s got a plan! #Goodies what do you think of her plan to go to Tuscany? #GoodWitch pic.twitter.com/JGBR4aHExr

The next day, Abigail announces that she’s moving to Tuscany now that she’s not honeymooning there. I feel like this move is a little odd. She didn’t want to move to a nearby town, leaving her flower business, in order to support Donovan if he ran for governor. This was even after we learned that her real dream was running an ad agency again rather than her flower business. And Donovan was all in for supporting Abigail’s new ad agency. But now she’s willing to leave her flower business to go to Tuscany, but she wouldn’t move her flower business to the next town for Donovan. Is the bottom line that Abigail just wasn’t really in love with Donovan in the first place? I’m thinking that she was in love with the idea of breaking the curse, but not really in love with Donovan. It’s an interesting realization to have as the series ends.

Stephanie, meanwhile, is thrilled with the idea that Adam will one day be preaching to a full church, and she and their kids will be watching him every Sunday. And Tom’s surgery went great, so his and Martha’s story is set with a hopeful ending.

In the last scene, Cassie and Sam are getting ready to leave on a well-deserved months-long vacation that includes visiting Grace. And as it should, the series ends with Cassie and Sam driving away into the proverbial sunset together, a future of love and happiness waiting ahead of them.

Overall, this was a beautiful series finale. While the ending with Abigail and Donovan was a bit surprising (although in some ways, we could see it coming), I can appreciate that they didn’t want to end every couple’s storyline in the same way. It looks like things are going to happy and peaceful in Middleton from now on, just as they should be.

‘Good Witch’ Ends With A Look Towards The Future, Breaks Ground For Hallmark Channel

Deadline 25 July, 2021 - 09:30pm
