President Joe Biden says the US service members who were killed in attacks outside Kabul airport in Afghanistan were “heroes”.

Addressing the nation from the White House, Mr Biden said they were “engaged in a dangerous, selfless mission to save the lives of others”.

At least a dozen US service members were killed in Thursday’s attacks, along with scores of Afghans.

Mr Biden addressed those responsible for the attack, telling them: “We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay.”

The Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

One of the bombers struck people standing knee-deep in a wastewater canal under the sweltering sun, throwing bodies into the fetid water.

Those who moments earlier had hoped to get on flights out could be seen carrying the wounded to ambulances in a daze, their own clothes darkened with blood.

The IS affiliate in Afghanistan is far more radical than the Taliban, who recently took control of the country in a lightning blitz and condemned the attack.

Western officials had warned of a major attack, urging people to leave the airport, but that advice went largely unheeded by Afghans desperate to escape the country in the last few days of an American-led evacuation before the US officially ends its 20-year presence on August 31.

Emergency, an Italian charity that operates hospitals in Afghanistan, said it had received at least 60 patients wounded in the airport attack, in addition to 10 who were dead when they arrived.

“Surgeons will be working into the night,” said Marco Puntin, the charity’s manager in Afghanistan. The wounded overflowed the triage zone into the physiotherapy area and more beds were being added, he said.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said there were casualties, including among members of the military, but gave no figure. He said one explosion was near an airport entrance and another was a short distance away by a hotel.

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that those responsible for the attack in Kabul “will be sought and brought to justice.”

The New York Democrat said in a statement that he had just spoken to Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin about the “heinous attacks” on US personnel and the Afghan partners.

“I strongly condemn this act of terrorism and it must be clear to the world that the terrorists who perpetrated this will be sought and brought to justice,” he said.

Meanwhile, the US House Republican leader called on Speaker Nancy Pelosi to call the Congress back into session so lawmakers can consider legislation would prohibit the August 31 withdrawal until all Americans are out of Afghanistan.

Rep Kevin McCarthy of California said: “It is time for Congress to act quickly to save lives.”

A return to session before the deadline is highly unlikely. The Democrats aligned with President Joe Biden hold majority control and are not expected to consider such legislation to alter the withdrawal date.

Republicans have been highly critical of Mr Biden’s handling of the situation in Kabul.

How to preorder the Halo Infinite Xbox Series X console

CNET 27 August, 2021 - 12:55pm

During Gamescom Opening Night Live on Wednesday, Microsoft unveiled a new limited-edition Xbox Series X bundle with a stunning Halo Infinite design and matching controller as well as a digital copy of the game. Preorders for the $550 Halo Infinite Xbox Series X bundle went live soon afterward, with stock dropping (and quickly selling out) at the Microsoft Store, Target and Walmart

As of Friday, we're still waiting on preorders to go live at a couple of stores: Amazon and Best Buy. Placeholder listings are live for both of these retailers, so stock could become available at any time. Keep an eye on these listings if you're still hoping to preorder the Xbox Series X Halo Infinite limited edition.

Scalper pricing is already starting to spiral out of control, with listings on eBay exceeding $1,000 for the Halo Xbox Series X bundle. It's unsurprising that resellers had a heyday with the limited-edition bundle, given how things have gone with next-gen console restocks over the past year, but it's a disappointing reality all the same. As always, we do recommend holding out to buy the console bundle at list price if you can.

The Xbox Series X Halo Infinite limited-edition bundle costs $550, a $50 premium.

We'll continue tracking availability for the new Xbox Series X limited-edition bundle as more listings go live. The console goes on sale Nov. 25, while Halo Infinite itself is out Dec. 8. In the meantime, here's the current state of console bundle preorders.

A listing for the Xbox Series X Halo bundle has appeared at Amazon. Preorders haven't yet gone live yet, which means you'll want to keep a close eye on this store page today.

An Xbox Series X Halo Infinite bundle listing has appeared at Best Buy. We haven't seen preorders go live there yet, so you'll want to keep an eye on that listing today as well. Stock could become available at any time.

Walmart's Xbox Series X Halo Infinite bundle went up for preorder at 5:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday and quickly sold out. Walmart generally announces its console restocks ahead of time, and if it does another round for the Halo Series X console, we'll include that information here as soon as we get it.

Preorders went live (and sold out) at the Xbox Store on Wednesday, but you can check for availability below.

Preorders went live at Target on Wednesday afternoon and quickly sold out. You can check for current availability below.

In addition to the Xbox Series X Halo Infinite limited-edition console, Microsoft announced a Halo Infinite limited-edition Elite Series 2 controller. This gamepad has a different design from the one in the console bundle; instead, it's green with a Master Chief-themed design and orange D-pad. It's also out Nov. 25.

Seagate and Razer have teamed up with Microsoft to produce their own Halo-themed gear. Seagate's Halo Infinite special-edition Xbox game drive has a similar Master Chief design in Halo green and will be available this October for $100 (2TB) or $160 (5TB). Meanwhile, Razer has a new headset option for Xbox players with the Halo Infinite-edition Kairo Pro, which matches the game drive's design and supports Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth 5.0 for low-latency gaming. It sells for $170, and you can preorder it now. Both products release this October.
