Joe Cole says that the Liverpool crowd influences referees

Rousing The Kop - Liverpool FC News 21 August, 2021 - 11:20am

The Reds are boss aren’t they?

It’s great to see Jürgen Klopp’s side back to winning ways and doing so in front of capacity crowds.

Today was the first Premier League game in front of a packed Anfield for over a year.

The crowd were treated to some champagne football with the 2-0 score line actually quite kind to Burnley.

Diogo Jota opened the scoring with a fine header from an excellent Kostas Tsimikas cross.

The Reds continued to dominate until Sadio Mane doubled the lead.

Virgil van Dijk fired an inch perfect pass out to Harvey Elliott who took the ball down well before finding Trent Alexander-Arnold who in turn flicked a delicious pass through to Mane, the Senegal forward took his chance well.

We could’ve scored a few more but the game ended 2-0 with Alisson Becker pulling out a fine save late in the game.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game the punditry team discussed how important it is for the Reds to have their fans back.

Joe Cole sung the praises of the Liverpool crowd, pointing out that the fans spur on the side and intimidate officials:

“This club in particular, this crowd does get behind its team and it does influence referees and it does lift the players.”

We’ve seen this mentioned before.

It must be hard to give a contentious decision in front of a baying Kop.

If the Liverpool crowd influences officials then so what? That’s the officials’ problem, not ours.

Maybe it’s time that rival fans stop talking about ‘the Anfield myth’ considering just how many ex-pros talk up the influence of the atmosphere Kopites generate.
