Flex Alert issued for Monday as heatwave, Oregon wildfire continues to strain energy grid

KGET News 13 July, 2021 - 01:29am

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — State energy officials have called for a Flex Alert for Monday as high temperatures and an Oregon wildfire are expected to put strains on California’s electric grid.

The Flex Alert has been issued for Monday, July 12 between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Residents are “strongly encouraged” to reduce their energy use during that time.

Residents can limit their energy usage by turning off unnecessary lights, using fans to cool off instead of air conditioning, by setting their thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, and to avoid using major appliances like washing machines, dryers and dish washers.

California Independent System Operator officials said the Bootleg Fire in Oregon has caused transmission lines to become unreliable. Along with high temperatures in the region, energy demand is expected to remain high Monday.

Bakersfield saw temperatures reach 111 degrees Sunday and weather-related outages in PG&E serviced areas.

Cal ISO says if demand exceeds energy supply, it may call for local utilities to begin rotating blackouts.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pfizer says it plans to meet with top U.S. health officials Monday to discuss the drugmaker’s request for federal authorization of a third dose of its COVID-19 vaccine as President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser acknowledged that "it is entirely conceivable, maybe likely” that booster shots will be needed.

The company said it was scheduled to have the meeting with the Food and Drug Administration and other officials Monday, days after Pfizer asserted that booster shots would be needed within 12 months.

The outages affected thousands in the Bakersfield area Sunday. PG&E's outage website showed over 6,000 customers were affected.

In a statement, Bakersfield police said officers arrested the woman identified as Sandra Bonertz, 76, for murder.

Californians urged to conserve energy amid scorching heat wave, raging wildfires

KTLA Los Angeles 13 July, 2021 - 01:29am

Amid record-breaking temperatures and raging wildfires, California’s energy operator has issued another Flex Alert in an effort to stabilize the state’s electric grid.

Over the weekend, a fast-moving wildfire in Oregon knocked out some transmission lines that carry electricity into California, reducing power supplies by as much as 3,500 megawatts, the California Independent System Operator said. The lines remained unreliable Monday.

Residents are being asked to conserve as much electricity as possible from 4 to 9 p.m. to reduce stress on the system — particularly as continuing high temperatures across the West increase demand.

The National Weather Service said the blistering heat wave that blanketed Southern California this weekend would continue through Monday, with highs well into the 100s across interior areas.

The release of untreated sewage from the city of Los Angeles’ largest treatment plant closed miles of beaches to swimming from the LAX area to El Segundo Monday, officials said.

A power outage Sunday night caused sewage from the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in Playa del Rey to spill into the ocean, L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a tweet.

More than 175 people were arrested over that weekend, most of them on Saturday night, when at least 2,500 people descended on the city’s beach for the event.

The lawsuit alleging widespread fraud was dropped after the judge found nothing but “speculation and conjecture” that votes for Trump somehow were destroyed or switched to votes for Joe Biden, who won Michigan by 2.8 percentage points.

California ISO issues Flex Alert due to Oregon wildfire, heat

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) — With power lines impacted due to a wildfire in Oregon and continued high temperatures, the California Independent System Operator has issued a Flex Alert for Monday.

The alert will begin at 4 p.m. and will last until 9 p.m.

With electric transmission lines from Oregon still unreliable due to the explosive Bootleg Fire and continued high temperatures across the West resulting in increased demand for electricity, the California Independent System Operator (ISO) issued a statewide Flex Alert for Monday, July 12 to help stabilize the state’s electric grid and deal with uncertainty created by the extraordinary conditions.

“The fast-moving Bootleg Fire tripped off transmission lines on Friday and again Saturday, limiting electricity flow from the Pacific Northwest to California and other states,” California ISO reported.

Power supplies have been reduced by as much as 5,500 megawatts.

A Restricted Maintenance Operations is also in place, California ISO said. The RMO requires generators to postpone any planned outages for routine equipment maintenance, allowing all available resources to be dispatched to the grid.

Residents are asked to limit their power usage Monday night by setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, turning off unnecessary lights and not using big appliances.

California ISO suggests residents use fans and to pre-cool homes earlier in the day.

FOLSOM, Calif. (KTXL) – As the waters of Folsom Lake recede to levels rarely seen, the remnants of a long-ago abandoned, flooded Gold Rush village are reemerging.

Visitors can now see building foundations, bricks, broken pottery and rusty nails that were all once part of Mormon Island.

“This is really the new normal, these weather events are becoming more and more common and more and more frequent,” said Leah Rubin Shen, the director of the Advanced Energy Economy.

Stockton police officials said the man was walking in the area of El Dorado and Acacia Street before officers responded to the crash at 7:33 p.m.
