What are pronouns on Instagram?

Instead of using up precious character space in their bio, Instagram is now letting users select their pronouns in a specific section of their profile. Users can choose from a variety of pronouns including he/him, she/her and they/them. Today.comInstagram lets users add pronouns in new featured section of profiles

Instagram Adds New 'Pronouns' Option on User Profiles to Maximize Inclusion

Social Media Today 12 May, 2021 - 09:01am

As you can see here, the new option is listed in your profile settings - just select 'Edit Profile'>'Pronouns' and you can enter in your chosen identifiers.

Instagram provides a range of pronoun options, which will populate in the window as you enter your chosen terms. Users can edit or remove their chosen pronouns at any time, while you can also choose whether your pronouns listing is shown to everyone, or just your followers in the app.

It's a good addition for Instagram, which adds to its broader push to maximize inclusion, and ensure that all users are able to represent themselves as they choose on the platform.

That movement is actually gaining more traction across the broader social media sphere, with LinkedIn also recently adding pronoun listings on its user profiles, while Instagram's parent company Facebook has had pronoun options available within its user display tools since 2014, though they have evolved significantly over time.

For many, the addition won't make any difference to the way they use the app, but for those to whom it is relevant, it's a hugely important update, and will help greatly in validating their identity and improving their interactions based on their Insta profile.

The update is now available in the latest version of the app.

Instagram is rolling out pronouns on user profiles

Neowin 12 May, 2021 - 09:01am

Instagram users in a few countries can now set their preferred pronouns on the platform, according to the product’s Twitter feed. Any pronouns that you pick will appear next to your name and can be shown to all users or just followers if you want to maintain privacy on the matter. Instagram did not say which countries the feature is available in but it is live in the United Kingdom.

Users can select up to four pronouns to add to their account and can only pick them from a pre-defined list that Instagram has come up with. If you prefer very obscure pronouns they may not be available but many of the more popular ones are. Some of the pronouns that users can pick include: his, he, him, she, her, hers, hir, e, ey, em, eir, they, them, theirs, thon, thons, per, pers, fae, faer, ze, zir, zie, xe, xem, xyr, co, cos, ve, ver, vis, vi, vir, ne, nir, nirs, nee, ner, ners, mer, and mers.

Instagram says that while the feature is only available in a few countries right now, it does plan to roll it out to more in the future. It’s unclear if the feature is only available for those who speak English right now or whether pronouns in other languages are available too.

Over the last several years, more and more people have been declaring which pronouns they use in their social media bios to avoid any confusion. Instagram is one of the first platforms to build a multitude of pronouns directly into its profile pages.

Instagram adds a dedicated spot for your pronouns – TechCrunch

TechCrunch 11 May, 2021 - 06:35pm

Seeing someone mention their pronouns in their Instagram bio has become commonplace — so much so that the app now has a dedicated location where users can put pronouns without taking up that valuable profile space.

The company announced the new feature on Twitter, saying that it is only available in a few countries just now, but will be arriving in more soon. I was able to make it work here in the U.S. in version 187 of the iOS app.

To set your pronoun, just go to your profile page, hit “Edit Profile,” then look in the list of items for an empty Pronouns field (this is different from the one deeper in “personal information settings). Tap that and you can pick what you prefer to be called by — up to four items.

Interestingly, the feature does not allow users to just type in whatever they want — presumably so the field is used for its intended purpose and not for gender-related “jokes.” I was able to find most of the pronouns on this list, and my guess is Instagram will add more if people ask. (I’ve contacted the company asking for more information.)

Whatever you choose will appear next to your name a slightly darker type — there’s also the option to show this only to followers, in case a person’s gender isn’t something they want to share publicly. Of course if you want to freeform it or use some emoji or fancy font, you can skip the “official” pronouns and do that instead.

Not everyone feels the need to share or specify their gender, but the practice has become so widespread that Instagram made a smart choice in making it an integrated part of the profile. It both saves space (now you can put “Doom metal fiend” and “Proud mom” on two lines) and endorses gender identity as something at least as important as links and other bio info.
