New Era?!?!? Paul Puts UFC Champs (And Masvidal) On Notice

MMA Mania 25 August, 2021 - 05:08pm

Jake Paul, the Internet sensation-turned professional boxer, rips UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal for picking Tyron Woodley.

Paul (3-0, boxing) will fight former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight kingpin, Tyron Woodley (19-7-1, MMA), in the headlining bout of Showtime Boxing’s pay-per-view event (PPV) on Aug. 29, 2021 (also streaming on FITE) inside Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio. “Gamebred” predicted (see it here) that his American Top Team (ATT) teammate, Woodley, will separate Paul from consciousness.

“The Problem Child” has a different perspective.

“He’s going to eat those words very quickly,” Paul told MMAMania.com and SB Nation’s Combat Culture. “This is coming from a guy who just got knocked out cold in an embarrassing way.”

Masvidal previously told The MMA Hour’s Ariel Helwani, “If Jake wins, f—king wild, my hat’s off to him, I was wrong, I don’t know s—t about fighting. But, chances are, Woodley’s going to knock him the f—k out.”

“So yeah, maybe he doesn't know that much about fighting,” Paul responds in this new interview. “He’s been in this game for a long time. he’s got a lot of fights. he’s got a lot of experience. I respect him. I think Jorge has done a lot for this sport. I think he’s a good guy, but, unfortunately, my friend it’s a new era. No matter how much experience you have, it’s about the quality of the experience. Tyron and Jorge have the same manager, so of course, he’s going to say this. Of course, he’s going to side with his boy. But you know, maybe Jorge’s next, to be honest. After I take out this guy, he can step right up. I’m basically just showing these UFC champions and these amazing UFC strikers can’t really go at it and they can’t compete at my level, at least.”

Woodley is a former five-time UFC champion, but Paul has also been called out by a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion ... Rashad Evans.

“I don’t even know if I’m familiar with him. Was he a welterweight?” Paul asks. “He’s old, no? I don’t know. I don’t see it happening. It has to make sense on so many levels for me to fight somebody. I want to increase the level of my competition after each fight. If I take out this five-time UFC champion, where do I go from there?”

One potential boxing match that is rich with story is a bout between Paul and fellow YouTuber, KSI. The English Internet sensation took a split decision against Jake’s older brother, Logan Paul, in Nov. 2019 (watch highlights). Jake also boasts an amateur technical knockout over KSI’s younger brother Deji Olatunji.

Paul is still open to fighting KSI; however, he says the gap between them is growing by the day.

“If we would have done it then, I think it would have been a lot better of a fight. He would have come in with those overhand rights and such. I might not have been as used to that. With that said, I still would have knocked him out then. For sure,” Paul says. “My brother is a little gun shy, he was afraid of those shots. I’m stepping right into him. I’m coming through with that right hand that has knocked out everyone so far. It knocked out KSI’s best friend. So I would have knocked him out then, it probably would have just taken a couple of rounds. If we fight now, it’s a one-round fight. A half-round fight. No chance of him getting out of the first round.”

Teddy Atlas: Jake Paul will knock out ‘predictable’ Tyron Woodley

You Pod to Win the Game

Teddy Atlas is backing the oddsmakers in the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley boxing match.

Although Paul has only had three professional boxing bouts, and none against actual boxers, he’s the favorite heading into his sternest test yet in former UFC welterweight champion Woodley.

Paul meets Woodley in a 190-pound bout Sunday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. Although Woodley has one-punch knockout power that won him a UFC title, Atlas thinks Paul is coming in with plenty of physical advantages.

“He’s going to be the smaller guy, the lighter guy,” Atlas said about Woodley on his show, “THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas.” “So Paul’s the bigger guy. He’s strong. [He] has that advantage and he has the opportunity to throw, which is a decent right hand that he possesses. He’s got the opportunity to throw it and land it because of the style of Woodley and the mistakes of Woodley. (Woodley) stands straight up. He’s predicable. He throws that slow jab. He throws it halfway out. He lets you get close. Paul’s got a good right hand. He’s going to land the right hand. So bad news is, Paul is going to knock him out.”

Atlas lauded Paul for being strategic when picking Woodley, an accomplished fighter known for his power, but a fighter who might be at the tail end of his career.

“The way I’m looking at it, he took this fight for a reason,” Atlas said. “He picked this fight for a reason. It’s because he can sell it. It’s because there’s going to be credibility attached to it. …

“He’s fighting a guy who’s going to be tough. He’s fighting a guy who’s a striker, who was a champion, and that’s part of the reason it’s going to sell and part of the reason he picked Woodley because you can attach credibility to this fight saying the guy could win.

“Woodley’s been a great champion, but Woodley’s 39 years old. He’s lost his last four fights and he’s lost his last two by KO and submission. I’ll say it, and this is not to be disrespectful – I already said the things I needed to say about how much I respect the guy – but he’s shot.

“He has the look of a shot fighter in MMA and UFC. Now a lot of people are going to say because he’s a professional fighter and a former champion that he’s going to beat Paul. He’s in a bad place mentally. He’s in a bad place physically. He’s not in his best place. Now having said what I said, losing those last four fights, 39 years old, he lost those to real fighters.”

J&J has been under pressure to produce evidence of whether a booster shot would increase protection from its one-shot vaccine as the U.S. government prepares to roll out a booster campaign next month. It found that a second dose of the J&J vaccine delivered six months after the first resulted in a ninefold increase in binding antibody levels over those seen 28 days after the first dose, the company said. The company did not release data on whether a second dose of its vaccine increases levels of neutralizing antibodies, which block the virus from entering cells.
