LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kanye West knows how to make a splash even with a listening event.
West is expected to unveil his 10th studio album, “Donda” during a listening event Thursday night at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. His album was named after his mother, Donda West, who died at the age of 58 following plastic surgery complications in 2007.
The sold-out event will be livestreamed on Apple Music.
West, 44, is mostly known as being associated with Chicago, but he was born in Atlanta - a Georgia city where there are no restrictions against large gatherings. The rapper-producer gifted 5,000 tickets to faculty, staff and students from some Atlanta HBCUs including Clark Atlanta, Morehouse, Spelman, Morris Brown and the Interdenominational Theological Center.
The 22-time Grammy winner revealed in a commercial, featuring U.S. track star Sha’Carri Richardson, during the NBA Finals on Tuesday that his highly-anticipated album will be released Friday. The commercial, scored and directed by West, featured “No Child Left Behind,” a song from his forthcoming album.
West’s new project is a follow up to his 2019 gospel-themed album “Jesus is King,” which won a Grammy for best contemporary Christian album.
Last year, West announced on Twitter - with colorful cover art and a track list - that he would release his latest album. At the time, his tweets indicated that his project would release on the same day as his rival Taylor Swift’s project “Folklore,” but his album ended up being postponed.
It’s not the first time Kanye has hosted a listening event for an upcoming album. In 2016, he debuted his album “The Life of Pablo” during a massive event and fashion show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Several big names who attended the show included soon-to-be ex-wife Kim Kardashian West, 50 Cent, Lil Kim, Caitlyn Jenner, A$AP Rocky and 2 Chainz.

Kanye West has confirmed fan suspicions about his long-delayed album — with a little help from elite athlete Sha’Carri Richardson.
After a week of frenzied Twitter speculation swirling around the possibility of a Friday drop date for “Donda,” West’s much-anticipated 10th full-length recording, the rapper has finally put the rumors to rest.
The commercial spot aired Tuesday during Game 6 of the NBA Finals, and features a visual of Richardson as she runs a 100-meter sprint in slow motion, while listening to West’s voice pump the lyric, “He’s done miracles on me,” through the Beats by Dre earbuds.
The ad also formally announced West will be hosting a listening party in Atlanta on Thursday, July 22. The event will be livestreamed via Apple music at 8 p.m. EST. This formal announcement follows the buzz and confirms fans’ suspicions about a rumored secret listening party in Las Vegas on July 18.
Confirmation about the upcoming album also came directly from West’s social media, which typically remains inactive.
West posted on his Instagram a series of close-up photos with his face covered to highlight the chains around his neck, each featuring the names of his children from his troubled marriage with Kim Kardashian: North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm.
The new release will reportedly not feature negative raps about his ex-wife: “Kanye actually played the song for Kim personally before the listening party,” an insider close to the former couple told Page Six. “It’s emotional and personal. Not negative at all.”

The rapper, 44, is set to debut his new album DONDA on Friday, and in the run-up to the release, he returned to Instagram Tuesday by sharing a gallery of mysterious images showing necklaces that feature his four kids' names on gold chains.
Kardashian West, 40, shared a photo of Saint on Instagram Tuesday in which he smiled while wearing a similar gold necklace with his name on it. She wrote, "Just how??? 😍😭," in the caption.
West also posted the new Beats ad that stars sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson and includes a snippet of his new song "No Child Left Behind." The tagline reads "Love Your Truth" before an announcement about a DONDA listening event on Apple Music's livestream one day before the album's release.
DONDA, which is named after West's late mother and the project he reportedly previewed to close friends in Las Vegas last weekend, will be his 10th studio album and originally had a release date of July 24, 2020.
In her Father's Day tribute on Instagram last month, Kardashian West included Kanye in a gallery of photos that also featured her late father Robert Kardashian, her brother Rob Kardashian, Caitlyn Jenner, Scott Disick, Tristan Thompson and Travis Scott, writing, "Happy Father's Day to all the amazing dads in our lives! Love you unconditionally!!!"
A source recently told PEOPLE, "Kim and Kanye are spending time with the kids. Kanye has accepted that Kim wants a divorce. For a long time, it was very hard for him. He was disappointed. He has come around though."
"He wants the best for his kids," the source added. "He is keeping things amicable with Kim so the kids can be happy. They have been spending time together as a family."
