Grey's Anatomy: Kate Walsh to Return as Addison in Season 18

TVLine 03 September, 2021 - 07:10am

Grey’s Anatomy‘s upcoming 18th season has just been event-ized.

TVLine has learned that Kate Walsh is set to reprise her role as Addison Forbes Montgomery in multiple episodes.

Walsh made her memorable Grey’s debut in the Season 1 finale as Derek’s surprise wife (at least it was a surprise to Meredith). Addison would continue to be a major player at the hospital for two more seasons, leaving in 2007 to front the Grey’s spinoff Private Practice, which ran until 2013.

Back in 2017, Walsh spoke to TVLine about a potential Addison comeback, admitting at the time, “I feel like we wrapped it up.” She then added, “I’m not saying if [series creator] Shonda [Rhimes] was like, ‘We’re gonna do a very special episode of Grey’s where… ‘ But she really consciously, we did it all. We had the spinoff, and we had all that. It was an amazing experience and journey.”

Walsh’s post Grey’s/Private Practice credits include stints in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why and The Umbrella Academy.

Grey’s Anatomy‘s season premiere is set for Thursday, Sept. 30 at 9/8c.

UPDATE: Walsh took to Instagram late Thursday to officially confirm her return, telling fans, “I’m so excited to be home again.” Watch the full video below.

This is awesome news! Will be great to see Addison again.

This is so great! I need them to leave her marriage out of it though. She and Jake were the perfect match, just leave it be and let her return be about something else.

They’re going to at least address the elephant in the room about Derek…

OMG! Finally… I missed Addison so much in Grey’s.

Addison has always been in my top 5 favorite Grey’s characters, so I’m super excited she’s FINALLY coming back to the show! I would love it if this turned into a full time gig but I’ll be satisfied to see her return either way. It’s so crazy to think it’s already been 10 years since her last appearance!

Been waiting for this since Private Practice ended. The more episodes the better.

Agreed! So interested to see what they do though – because Amelia and Addison TRULY felt like sisters by the end of PP, and this last season of Grey’s like Amelia forgot Addison as all in favor of this Meredith/Maggie/Amelia three sisters arc. Which I understand but still… Amelia has Addison and never relies on her anymore.

I HATE the whole Meredith/Maggie/Amelia sister thing. Amelia is not their sister. They don’t even get along half the time it seems like. They talk like they’re actual sisters, and Amelia is not blood related. I don’t know, it just annoys me. And yeah, it also annoys me that Amelia has completely forgotten about her life on Private Practice. Well, they might mention it for like 5 seconds here and there, but it’s almost like it never existed. But anyway, I hope they acknowledge that they worked together in LA for a while.

I was sure she was never gonna appear again after missing the episodes following Derek’s death

Great character. Curious to see what story will bring her back to town after all this time.

Yay, I love her! Hopefully she’ll talk some sense into Amelia about Link, because I was not a fan of the direction they went in the finale. I could also see her coming in to mentor Jo for a couple of episodes as well.

I grew to really like Addison. I will be curious what she will be doing. That will be a lot of doctors in the OB/GYN department.

Totally makes sense with Jo going to OB!

Yea!!!! Put some life back in this show!!!

Just like that I will be tuning in again! Love her!

Addison is one of my favorites. Followed her to Private Practice and I am so excited for her Grey’s return.

This is great news. But if Cristina doesn’t come back before the series finale (whenever that will be) I’m gonna be so mad!!

I’m in. She was a far better sister to Amelia than Meredith ever was.

Wait – her announcement on the Grey’s page is so Shonda-centric with no mention of Vernoff. Is there something about the behind the scenes that we don’t know Michael?

I think they just use Shonda’s name for the name recognition at this point.

She’s not really that involved with the show these days, considering she’s launching several projects on Netflix.

Yeah, I just found it so odd to say she’d be working with her when she (at least mostly) won’t

She worked with Shonda for 9 years, 6 of them starring her own show. It’s OK for her to show some appreciation. Shonda created the character and gave Addison her own spin-off.

I didn’t say it wasn’t okay. I’m just pointing out that she explicitly says she’ll be working with Shonda again

Lost Jackson.. But get Addison back… Maybe not a straight up one for one in my book but close enough for me

Don’t bring her back to ruin her or kill her, just a sweet reunion between her and Amelia and he’ll even Meredith.

So this is def the last season then, for sure.

Next to be added is Izzie Stevens with KHeigl returning!! (I know, I know, wishful thinking but…maybe, just maybe? For the last season?)

It is starting to sound like this will be the final season.

That’s the best news ever! Wish she would stay the whole season or the remaining seasons for as long as Grey’s sticks around! She’ll bring some life to the show, I hope, unless they change her character and make her all woke like they have all of the other characters. So please don’t change Addison! She’s great just as she is. So happy she’s returning!

It’s fantastic to have her back! Hopefully it will be permanent & she will be hired as a regular actress on the show. It would be so cool to have her “husband” Benjamin Bratt show up to Grey Sloan as well (her tv husband from Private Practice)
