Pinpoint De Gea pass praised after helping United seal points

Sporting News 12 September, 2021 - 12:30pm

A Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Manchester United convincingly beat Newcastle United 4-1 at Old Trafford, but despite Paul Pogba grabbing another two assists, was he beaten to the punch for pass of the match by David de Gea?

With the Red Devils leading 2-1 with 10 minutes left, a Bruno Fernandes piledriver and classy finish from Jesse Lingard secured all three points and ensured Ronaldo’s homecoming got off to a winning start.

At 2-1, it could have been a nervy finish if Newcastle sustained a spell of pressure and won a number of corners and free kicks in dangerous areas.

But with Newcastle a little short at the back, De Gea produced a pin point pass out of his hands into the path of Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood passed to Pogba, who passed to Fernandes, who then unloaded a thunderous strike into the top corner to make sure the three points were assured.

The pass from De Gea would have made Pogba, Fernandes and even maybe Paul Scholes proud.

If the Spaniard can start to pick out those passes regularly and catch teams cold with the pace and quality we possess, it’s yet another way Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side can hurt teams.

De Gea has made an assured start to the new season and looks to be enjoying his football and the buzz around the club.

With the addition of Raphael Varane, De Gea now has a centre back partnership in a similar ilk to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who were the world class pairing when he joined the club, in front of him.

Here is how some fans reacted to De Gea’s pass….

What a ball by De Gea in the build up too! https://t.co/BOI7PRQ7rL

This pass by De Gea doesn't get the credit it deserves https://t.co/Ncqf7yTxOU

De Gea has been great this season btw. He's been making match winning saves, starting to sweep and also distributing well

The Latest Austin Ekeler Injury News & Fantasy Football Advice

The Action Network 12 September, 2021 - 10:25am

When Austin Ekeler popped up on the NFL injury report on Wednesday with a hamstring issue, it was immediately concerning for fantasy football managers.

However, it appears news has gotten better each day for the Chargers running back since then.

According to NFL Network, Ekeler will play today barring any setbacks during warm-ups. He did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday but apparently was good enough Friday to inspire confidence that he can play on Sunday.

The Chargers travel to Washington to face a formidable Washington Football Team defense. That matchup paired with any question of health makes Ekeler a tough decision for fantasy managers considering their Week 1 lineups.

Ekeler’s injury designation moved him down in The Action Network fantasy football consensus rankings, where he sits at No. 23 for the week. Before the injury, he was RB13 for the week according to expert Sean Koerner.

As more information about Ekeler’s status is revealed, the fantasy rankings will be updated accordingly.

The betting line has been active for the game. The Chargers opened as 1-point favorites against Washington, but the line has flipped all the way to the Football Team being a 2-point favorite.

There are some 2.5’s in the market as well.

Is Austin Ekeler playing this week? Hamstring injury returns ahead of Week 1

Pro Football Network 12 September, 2021 - 10:00am

Ekeler was back at practice on Friday in a limited capacity after missing the team’s previous two practices. He suffered a hamstring strain in 2020, and we’re back in that same arena to begin 2021. However, he won’t have to land on injured reserve this time.

Head coach Brandon Staley said Ekeler looked good on Friday, and they’re optimistic for Sunday against the vaunted Washington Football Team defense. However, hamstrings are an incredibly touchy injury to deal with. Returning too soon could re-aggravate a soft-tissue injury like that.

Ekeler enters his fifth NFL season with the Chargers, and all but 2019 proved how difficult the running back position can be on the body.

In 2017, Ekeler broke his hand during a loss to the Chiefs. He didn’t miss any games, but he had to play the rest of the season in a cast. Still, Ekeler rushed for 5.5 yards per carry as a rookie and caught 27 passes.

In August of the next season, Ekeler suffered a calf strain but returned in time for the regular season. He’d play 14 games before the injury bug crept back into frame. During a Dec. 9 game against the Bengals, Ekeler suffered a neck stinger and a concussion. He missed the final two contests.

After remaining healthy and catching a million passes in 2019, 2020 again proved difficult for the Chargers running back. Ekeler missed six games in the middle of last season with a hamstring strain that landed him on IR. Then, in the team’s season finale against the Chiefs, Ekeler suffered another concussion.

Concussions are like potato chips. Once you eat one, it’s tough to avoid eating more.

Death. Taxes. Wondering if Austin Ekeler is playing this week. Something in life are inevitable. Ekeler gave fantasy managers heart palpitations after reports surfaced he was dealing with a hamstring injury that popped up this week. After back-to-back DNPs on Wednesday and Thursday, Ekeler turned the corner on Friday [September 10] and was a limited participant.

He is officially listed as questionable for the Chargers’ Week 1 game against the Washington Football Team. Head coach Brandon Staley said on Friday that Ekeler “looked good out there.”

Thats a massive sigh of releif as Ekeler is one of the permier RBs in fanatsy. After an RB4 finish in 2019, Ekeler averaged 18.1 opportunities and 16.5 points per game (including Week 4 when he suffered his hamstring injury). Even missing six games, Ekeler commanded 65 targets, eighth-most among all RBs, catching 54 for 403 yards. Add in the addition of OC Joe Lombardi, formerly of the Saints, and Ekeler could be primed for an Alvin Kamara-type role.

I am tempering expectations in Week 1 due to his hamstring and facing a Washington defense that ranked No. 3 in fantasy points allowed to RBs at just 18.7 per game and likely got even better. You’re still starting Ekeler, but he is a lower-end RB2 rather than an RB1 for Week 1.

Austin Ekeler Injury Update Boosts Week 1 Fantasy Outlook

The Duel 12 September, 2021 - 09:37am

He should be viewed as a legit RB1 in PPR leagues this week.

From @NFLGameDay: #Giants RB Saquon Barkley (knee) should be used sparingly today, #Chargers RB Austin Ekeler (hamstring) is full-go, and assuming all goes well in warmups, #Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr (knee) is expected to play. pic.twitter.com/s0YVUVskrg

Ekeler draws a really difficult matchup this week, as his Los Angeles Chargers take on the Washington Football Team. Washington was a top-12 defense against the run last year by DVOA, surrendering just 4.2 yards per carry, which also was a top-12 mark.

As a result, Washington surrendered just 18.78 PPR points per game to opposing RBs last year, which was the third-best mark in the league.

The matchup isn't ideal, but Ekeler's ability as a pass-catcher (5.8 receptions per game through nine healthy contests) should give him a high floor on a week-to-week basis.

With Ekeler at full strength, fantasy managers should be firing him up in the starting lineup this week. He checks in at RB10 in The Duel's Week 1 fantasy football rankings.
