Lance's status for the 49ers' Week 1 game vs. the Detroit Lions is in question after the rookie suffered a small finger fracture on his throwing hand in San Francisco's preseason finale. The No. 3 overall pick, however, is expected to get snaps throughout the season, and many think he will eventually supplant Jimmy Garoppolo as the starter.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS analyst Tony Romo hasn't watched a lot of Lance but he has no doubt the rookie can succeed early in his NFL career if the 49ers have to turn to him.

"I’ll tell you this — he’s in a good situation," Romo told USA Today's Doug Farrar. "And so, what happens is that it’s simpler for the quarterback. I’ve always said that if the backup quarterback can come in and complete this pass like, 95 percent of the time, that’s coaching. Now, if your [starting] quarterback is the only guy who can do that, that’s not coaching. That quarterback is special. Kyle Shanahan does a great job of making sure that multiple guys are in a position to succeed at the quarterback position. If [Lance] were to go in there and play, [Shanahan will] have an opportunity to utilize that and help him succeed.

"To me, I think he’ll be fine if he goes in there, because the system is built," Romo continued. "I haven’t seen enough of him at this point in time to tell you what his future is, but obviously, he has a big upside. They wouldn’t have drafted him that high otherwise."

Shanahan uses a lot of pre-snap motion in his offense, which is a massive help to a quarterback.

"If you’re in a system that uses it, it’s a dramatic ... it's hard to describe the difference," Romo said. "That was one thing I was always striving to utilize, because the league was evolving into that, and it’s relatively new over the last decade, right? ... Your job as a quarterback is to say, here are the possibilities. You’re looking at coverage, but if you know that it’s only this or this before the snap, you can eliminate that your eyes even have to look over here. So, that’s another tenth of a second, another half-second, and every time you can check off another quarter of a second, all of a sudden, you’re playing faster, you’re more efficient, and you’re getting to the right spot quicker. Now, you’re a better quarterback.

"Kyle Shanahan does that, and yes, that’s going to help, and that’s why he’s really good."

The 49ers gave up a lot of draft capital to move up and make Lance the future of their franchise. The rookie had some impressive moments during training camp and the preseason, and the 49ers showed glimpses of what the offense can look like with Lance as the trigger-man during their final preseason game vs. the Raiders.

And it was clear that he and Shanahan should be a very scary combination.

Kirk Herbstreit destroys LSU on College GameDay

Saturday Down South 11 September, 2021 - 09:17am

Kirk Herbstreit absolutely hammered LSU’s defense on College GameDay’s broadcast Saturday morning.

The Tigers, of course, were beat convincingly by UCLA last Saturday 38-27, and alarm bells are sounding for Ed Orgeron’s Bayou Bengals ahead of SEC play.

Herbstreit took that a step further, mentioning the word “effort” multiple times while talking about the historically great program. It wasn’t that the Tigers lost; it was the way in which they lost.

According to Herbstreit, he “can’t watch” the Tigers play right now because of the lack of effort on defense.

“Last year, they’re a 5-5 football team, gave up 35 points a game, one of the worst defenses we’ve seen at LSU,” Herbstreit said on ESPN College Gameday on Saturday. “And then they’re going to come out, here we go 2021, and they’re going to try to get off to a quick start and you kind of see the same stuff.

“New defensive coordinator. The missed tackles,” Herbstreit said. “I mean, there were 13 missed tackles (against UCLA), and I think that’s being generous. When you watch it, it’s not just missed tackles. It’s effort. It’s effort. You cannot believe that’s the LSU uniform when you watch this game, and I like UCLA. I liked them all year.”

Herbstreit mentioned that historically great LSU players such as Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and Booger McFarland, among others, probably can’t believe what they’re seeing from this Tigers’ defense.

The Tigers return Saturday to face Orgeron’s son, Cody, in the LSU vs. McNeese game.

Orgeron seemed quite pleased with the leadership he saw and was also keen to note the players didn’t seem the least bit ashamed of their pitiful performance. Question: has orgeron gone insane?

I thought LSU would be a lock to beat Florida. But playing like this. I’m not sure they can beat McDonald’s or who are they playing??? I didn’t know McDonald’s had a football team!!! McDonald’s state might beat LSU the way they are playing. LOL

Coach O if this is what you refer to as that Joe Brady offense being back. You got issues!!! Coach O was sarcastic about the Joe Brady offense. But it’s more proof of who actually coached the LSU NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM!!! Not coach O!!!

I wonder if young Cody watched Cryin’ Kirk rip Coach Whiteboots to pieces like that. I’ll bet he did.

So now you wonder if he in some way wants to help put Daddy out of his misery or do you think he sorta gets his jollies watching his old man twist in the wind like this?

But maybe Daddy wants him to take a dive? And by that, I mean help him to secure a blowout in the first half. I mean there’s no way LSU loses this game but without Cody’s help, it could be a three to six point game at the half and if that happens, the purple and yellow are gonna flip the flip out. A three point game against the likes of McNeese State is point and laugh material.

This is the most underrated game of the day and people really should tune in. Personally, I’m looking forward to some of Dacoacheaux’s fake tantrum throwing, like he did in practice this week and in the Alabama game last year.

YawYaw likes to show people what he thinks they want to see.

Might take a while to shake last season out of their britches!

17-0 at half against a team most people have never heard of. Orgeron’s fate is looming.
