Can Arsenal qualify for Europa League?

Arsenal are four points off catching Spurs in 7th place. Fernandinho: Winning the Premier League means the world to the players

Manchester City FC 11 May, 2021 - 08:19pm

And he says the level of competition in English football means winning the title here is a supreme achievement.

“I am so proud and so happy with what we have achieved,” the midfielder said. “The Premier League is the hardest league in world football – every single game is tough.

“To win it again means the world to me and the rest of the squad.

“Winning the Premier League title is the ultimate fulfilment of our ambitions. It’s what we all dreamed of as young players, so to do it is a wonderful feeling.”

The Brazilian was voted in as captain during the summer after the departure of Club legend David Silva.

And he has guided the squad with distinction, a player who always puts the team first, with his leadership on and off the pitch valued by players across the first-team and Academy setups.

He says it’s a privilege to lead a group of players with such desire and ambition.

“To captain this team is an honour and a privilege because the players have given their all throughout season, whether in training or in matches,” he added.

“The teamwork has been amazing. Football is everything to us and we strive every single day to be as good as we can be in the hope we can bring success to Manchester City.”

And in a season like no other, one heavily affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, City have had to play without our fans by our side.

Fernandinho says the whole squad wanted to win the Premier League title to help bring some joy to our supporters who have been unable to attend games this season – and he promised to do all he can to ensure we win the Champions League for the first time when we face Chelsea in Europe’s showpiece final at the end of the month.

“We have missed the fans so much,” he said. “We wanted to do this for them.

“We will enjoy this moment and we hope the fans do too.

“Rest assured we will continue to do everything we can to bring the Champions League home this season.”

Man United striker Cavani extends Old Trafford stay to 2022

ESPN 11 May, 2021 - 03:00pm

Edinson Cavani has extended his stay at Manchester United, the club have confirmed.

The striker has signed a new one-year deal to remain at Old Trafford until 2022.

"Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents," Cavani said. "I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here.

"They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things.

"From the very first moment that I arrived, I felt the confidence of the manager. As a player, this belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football and I want to thank him for that.

"I have been touched with how much the supporters have wanted me to stay, and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy with my performances on the field. I've not yet been able to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd and that is something that I cannot wait to do."

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added: "I said when Edinson signed, that he would bring energy, power and leadership to this group and I haven't been proved wrong, he has been everything I thought he would be and more.

"As coaches, we knew about his goalscoring record. However, it is his personality that has brought so much to this squad, he has a winning mentality and has an unequivocal attitude to everything he does.

"Edinson is one of the last to leave the training ground and sets the tone for the upcoming youngsters with his approach to his profession every single day. I have always wanted him to stay and experience the way our fans will respond to him as a player, and this means he will hopefully get that opportunity."

But after returning from an FA suspension and recovering from a series of nagging injuries, the 34-year-old, who was wanted by Boca Juniors, has scored eight goals in his last seven games and has been convinced to stay by Solskjaer.

Cavani has scored 15 goals in 35 games this season and could yet end the campaign with a Europa League winners' medal with United set to take on Villarreal in the final on May 26.

Cavani is also hopeful of making the Uruguay squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, one of the reasons behind his decision to stay in the Premier League.

Official: Edinson Cavani extends Manchester United contract

The Hard Tackle 11 May, 2021 - 03:00pm

Manchester United superstar Edinson Cavani has signed a one-year contract, extending his stay at the club till the end of the 2021/22 season, the Red Devils have confirmed on their official website.

Cavani arrived at Manchester United only last summer, signing on a free transfer after his contract with French champions Paris Saint-Germain had run down. A deadline day arrival, there had been quite a few who saw the transfer as a desperate move by the 20-time English champions. However, the veteran striker has proved the detractors wrong and has done in so in style.

Indeed, Cavani has already scored 15 goals for Manchester United in his debut season in England, playing a key role in the club’s rise to the second spot in the Premier League as well as their run to the finals of the UEFA Europa League. Given that the Uruguayan international had signed on just a one-year contract, there had been intense speculations over his future beyond the current campaign.

And, Cavani has decided to put those rumours to bed by putting pen to paper on a new one-year deal with Manchester United, thus extending his stay at M16 till the summer of 2022.

'The hardest one' - Guardiola proud of Man City players after winning third title in four years | Goal.com

Goal.com 11 May, 2021 - 02:41pm

Pep Guardiola has described Manchester City's Premier League title triumph during the coronavirus pandemic as the "hardest one".

City's third title in four years was confirmed on Tuesday when second-placed Manchester United fell 2-1 at home against Leicester City.

It completed a great turnaround for City, who were 11th in November after a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham but secured the crown with three matches to spare.

“This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other," Guardiola said. "This was the hardest one.

"We will always remember this season for the way that we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players.

“They are so special. To come through this season – with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced – and show the consistency we have is remarkable.

"It is relentless. Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient."

Guardiola believes this title was the toughest to win because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The season kicked off late with his players under-prepared and a shortened schedule meant that they did not have a midweek off until May.

Players were hit by a Covid-19 outbreak around Christmas that shut down the training ground but Guardiola has steered them to another title as well as a Carabao Cup victory, with a Champions League final against Chelsea to come.

“At the start of every season, the Premier League is the most important title for us. This is the one where you have to be there every three days, playing all your rivals home and away," the City boss added.

"Only by being the very best, week in week out, can you win this competition. It is a huge success.

“It is so important to say a huge thanks to all our fans. In our toughest moments, we couldn’t hear the crowd get behind us as usual, but we know they are with us everywhere we go and that has lifted us.

"I promise them we sense their love, we appreciate it and we could not have done what we have done without it. I hope we can all celebrate together one day not too far away.”

Manchester City crowned Premier League champions

Al Jazeera English 11 May, 2021 - 02:21pm

City missed the opportunity to secure a third league title under Pep Guardiola on Saturday when a missed penalty from Sergio Aguero proved costly as Chelsea came from behind to win 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

United needed victory to delay the celebrations once again, but a side showing 10 changes could not see off the Foxes, who took an early lead through a fine volley from teenager Luke Thomas which was cancelled out by Mason Greenwood’s neat finish.

Caglar Soyuncu headed in a corner midway through the second half to secure all three points.

United face Liverpool on Thursday, their third game in five days.

City’s triumph was their seventh league title.

Liverpool and West Ham, the teams fighting with Leicester for an automatic Champions League qualifying spot, would have been unhappy to see their rival get an easier ride at Old Trafford owing to Solskjaer’s team selection that saw footballers like Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba start on the bench.

Fifth-place West Ham must win their final three games and hope Leicester slip up in their remaining matches, against Chelsea and Tottenham.

Liverpool, in sixth place, might have a better shot as the deposed champions have four games left.

If Liverpool win all of them, Leicester would likely need to pick up four points against Chelsea and Tottenham.

About 100 United fans took to the pitch, setting off flares and calling for the Glazers to end their ownership.
