Nemanja Matic has welcomed Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United after a sensational return debut.
Ronaldo scored two goals in the 4-1 win over Newcastle to cap a memorable day.
Matic played all 90 minutes upon his recall to the side and helped the team record what was, in the end, a comfortable victory.
The Serbian was delighted with both Ronaldo’s comeback, the impact it had on the crowd, and United’s squad depth.
Matic told MUTV: “Ronaldo brings positive energy to the stadium. He deserves all the best. We have everything in the team, we need to use that.
“Competition is good, you need to have competition if you want to win trophies. We will play every three days really, we have big squad we have to use that. Everybody is ready, and excited.”
United were able to bring Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek off the bench, three international level players.
Fred, Victor Lindelof, Diogo Dalot and Juan Mata were unused substitutes, while there were a number who did not even make the squad due to fitness or selection reasons.
Scott McTominay, Alex Telles, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford were all out injured, while Anthony Elanga didn’t quite make the cut.
It gives United serious options and there will be some rotation for the Champions League tie against Young Boys on Monday night.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a real balancing act on his hands, but with Ronaldo leading the line, United will be a danger, whoever lines up alongside him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described Cristiano Ronaldo as a “fantastic goalscorer” after he netted a brace in his return game for Manchester United.
Ronaldo got a goal in either half as the hosts ran out comfortable winners against Steve Bruce’s side.
Javier Manquillo equalised for Newcastle in between Ronaldo’s two goals. Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard got on the scoresheet late on to make it 4-1 to the Red Devils.
Man Utd now have ten points from a possible twelve from their first four Premier League games of the 2021/22 season. Next up for Solskjaer’s side is Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Speaking post-match, Solskjaer told Sky Sports (as cited by BBC Sport) that the Newcastle win was “for everyone to enjoy”:
“When you win a game you enjoy it. When you see fans being happy you really enjoy it. There were loads of expectations today. They all delivered,” Solskjaer said.
“We have to deliver every time. That’s Manchester United. It doesn’t change.
“Cristiano Ronaldo has developed into a fantastic goalscorer. He played a very good game, He dropped in, linked play well. This is what Cristiano is about. This was a day for everyone to enjoy.”
On Fernandes and Ronaldo: “Good players can always play together. They have a mutual respect and play for Portugal together.
“It’s too early for me to predict where we’ll end up. We have to be consistent and let’s see where we are.
“It’s changed [the atmosphere]. A few months back you think how it was here. This is what Man Utd supporters should feel like.”
Fernandes also spoke after the game and he insisted that he is “really happy” to have Ronaldo at United:
“It was almost perfect if we did not concede. We are really happy and the performance in general was really good.
“Newcastle are really organised, defend well but we moved the ball quick and waited for the right moment to hit them.
“It is something I am working on and today I got the chance and scored.
“Everyone knows what Cristiano Ronaldo brought for the club and we are really happy to have him. The most important, as he will say, is the result for the team. Good players can always play well together.
“We arrived at the end (of last season) with some mistakes but did really well. There has been an improvement in the club and now it is time to take the next step.”
"Cristiano and Raphael comes in and there is no place to hide with winners like that."
"I don’t think he (Solskjaer) can (keep everyone happy) unfortunately."
