The LAPD said the incident occurred around 2:20 a.m. when a white BMW hit a pedestrian in an unmarked crosswalk without stopping. The BMW then fled, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not identify the pedestrian in their statement, but George's podcast cohost, Michaela Okland, confirmed his death in a tweet.

"I would rather you guys here this from me than a news article. Mat was killed in a hit and run last night," Okland tweeted. "I don’t really have any other words right now."

I would rather you guys here this from me than a news article. Mat was killed in a hit and run last night. I don’t really have any other words right now. I wish I could contact everybody who knows him personally but the news is already out and I just can’t do it right now

George and Okland spoke about relationships and pop culture on their podcast, which grew from the Twitter account of the same name that posts anonymous screenshots of messages with terrible exes. George also regularly went viral with jokes on his personal Twitter account.

I’ve been in LA for a year and haven’t seen a single celebrity. My mom comes for a weekend and meets Snoop Dogg

Fans of the podcast and George's Twitter account were shocked by the news and tweeted about his content's effect on their lives.

"i didn’t know him but i read his tweets every day, his content was a part of my routine," one person tweeted. "i can’t believe shit like this is real and happens to people that i interact with daily. RIP Mat George:(."

"I know in years to come I’ll feel so lucky that there’s so many recordings of Mat’s laugh to revisit," she tweeted. "I think you all knew within 10 seconds of listening to him how vibrant, loving, accepting, and wonderful Mat George is. This community made him so happy. Your words and support made him so happy. Thanks for talking about him."

In an interview with Shoutout Arizona last year, George said he wanted to make LGBTQ people feel connected.

"Growing up and being in the closet, I never knew anyone or heard about anyone who had similar experiences and fears that I had. My hopes for my Twitter account and SheRatesDogs the Podcast is to share my stories and make LGBTQ+ people all across the world feel like they’re not alone," George said. "The most rewarding moments are when members of the LGBTQ+ community reach out to me and tell me what a difference I’ve made in their lives."

The LAPD is offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who offers information that leads to the identification of the driver.

Mat George, Podcast Host, Killed in Hit-and-Run at 26

The New York Times 19 July, 2021 - 05:10pm

Mr. George, the co-host of “She Rates Dogs,” was struck as he crossed a street early on Saturday morning in Los Angeles, the authorities said.

Mat George, the 26-year-old co-host of the podcast “She Rates Dogs” known for his humorous takes on dating, pop culture and his identity as a gay man, was struck and killed by a car in Los Angeles on Saturday in what the authorities called a hit-and-run.

The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement that the hit-and-run occurred in the Beverly Grove neighborhood of Los Angeles around 2:20 a.m.

A pedestrian had been walking in an unmarked crosswalk when a white BMW struck him and drove away. The pedestrian died at the scene, the police said.

The department did not confirm whether the pedestrian was Mr. George, but the statement said the pedestrian was a 26-year-old Arizona resident. Mr. George graduated from Arizona State University in 2017, according to his LinkedIn page.

Michaela Okland, his friend and co-host on the podcast, confirmed his death on Twitter.

On the show, the two co-hosts swapped dating stories and shared their thoughts on mental health, “The Bachelorette” and Britney Spears.

In an interview in December with the website Shoutout Arizona, Mr. George said he had wondered whether he would be able to support himself after moving to Los Angeles last year to pursue a career in entertainment.

“Towards the end of my college days at Arizona State University, I started to share my experiences as a gay man with different people I was close to,” he said. “Their reactions made me realize that a lot of these stories were funny to others, which then gave me more confidence to start sharing them with even more people.”

Abby Govindan, a standup comedian and writer based in New York, said on Twitter on Saturday that Mr. George never took himself too seriously when people mocked him on Twitter.

“Mat got harassed on here by strangers relentlessly but he had an impeccable talent for taking it in stride and turning it into a joke for his followers to laugh at,” Ms. Govindan said.

Mr. George’s humorous takes often drew widespread attention on Twitter. Last week, he tweeted a photo of his mother and Snoop Dogg.

“I’ve been in LA for a year and haven’t seen a single celebrity,” he wrote. “My mom comes for a weekend and meets Snoop Dogg.”

When other users said the man was probably a doppelgänger of the rapper, Mr. George said: “Can everyone stop saying it’s not Snoop Dogg. My mom’s gonna be heartbroken the next time she logs onto Twitter.”

In 2017, Mr. George drew attention after he devised a creative way to measure a microwave he was selling. When someone on Facebook asked him for measurements, he posted a photo of vodka bottles next to the microwave for comparison.

“I don’t have a tape measurer but it’s about as tall as a 5th of berry new Amsterdam and has a length of a berry and mango 5th of new am,” he wrote.

According to his LinkedIn page, Mr. George worked as a medical scribe in Phoenix, taking medical information from patients, for nearly three years after he graduated from college, where he studied biology.

He was originally from Liberty, Mo., according to his Facebook page. Information about survivors was not immediately available.

The Police Department is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information about the hit-and-run driver.

Ms. Okland said on Twitter that she and Mr. George had recorded one more episode of “She Rates Dogs,” but “it will likely be put on hold.”

“In years to come, I’ll feel so lucky that there’s so many recordings of Mat’s laugh to revisit,” she wrote.

I would rather you guys here this from me than a news article. Mat was killed in a hit and run last night. I don’t really have any other words right now. I wish I could contact everybody who knows him personally but the news is already out and I just can’t do it right now

She followed up her post by adding, "I know he's laughing at me for having such a stupid typo in the first sentence of this." Okland also responded to one follower's since-deleted tweet by saying George's mother said "there was a traffic cam where it happened."

"Thank you to everybody who's reached out, I'm really sorry but I probably won't respond for awhile even if we are close," Okland later wrote. "And thank you so much to everybody telling stories and sharing how he impacted you. Whenever you think of him in the future, please do talk about him."

On the podcast's own Twitter page, Okland said the two had already recorded an episode that was due to drop on Tuesday, but she would "likely" be putting it on hold for the time being.

"I know in years to come I'll feel so lucky that there's so many recordings of Mat's laugh to revisit," she added. "I am not ready to talk about everything, or to have to use past-tense to describe him. I think you all knew within 10 seconds of listening to him how vibrant, loving, accepting, and wonderful Mat George is. This community made him so happy. Your words and support made him so happy. Thanks for talking about him."

In a statement to the New York Times, she added, "My hope going forward is that people continue to talk about Mat and share his stories because a little bit of the future he wanted can be preserved that way."

George himself previously opened up about how important it was for him to share his voice as a gay man with listeners. "My hopes for my Twitter account and SheRatesDogs the Podcast is to share my stories and make LGBTQ+ people all across the world feel like they're not alone," he told Shoutout Arizona last year. "The most rewarding moments are when members of the LGBTQ+ community reach out to me and tell me what a difference I've made in their lives."

"While this is all fun for me, I realized that I could actually make a difference with this," he added. "Growing up and being in the closet, I never knew anyone or heard about anyone who had similar experiences and fears that I had."

Gay Podcaster Mat George Killed in Hit-and-Run in Los Angeles

Advocate.com 19 July, 2021 - 03:16pm

The cohost of the popular She Rates Dogs podcast was 26.

Mat George, best known as the cohost of the hit podcast She Rates Dogs, died Saturday as the result of a hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles, The New York Times reports. George became a favorite voice in the podcasting world for sharing his experiences dating as a gay man, as well as his takes on pop culture.

George was reportedly struck by a BMW while walking in a crosswalk in the Beverly Grove community. Following his passing, his cohost, Michaela Okland, confirmed the news via Twitter. "I would rather you guys [hear] this from me than a news article. Mat was killed in a hit and run last night," Okland tweeted. "I don't really have any other words right now. I wish I could contact everybody who knows him personally but the news is already out and I just can't do it right now."

The two collaborated on the podcast where they shared their opinions on everything from Britney Spears to mental health and, of course, their love lives. Okland said it was important to George to help queer folks feel more accepted, as it was something he had desired as a kid. As it turned out, sharing his story would not only be helpful to his audience, but allow George to support himself while living in Los Angeles. “Towards the end of my college days at Arizona State University, I started to share my experiences as a gay man with different people I was close to,” George said in an interview with Shoutout Arizona. “Their reactions made me realize that a lot of these stories were funny to others, which then gave me more confidence to start sharing them with even more people.”

Okland also shared that the two had recorded one more episode of She Rates Dogs before George’s death, which was due to come out Tuesday. For now, however, it will “likely be put on hold,” she said.

“My hope going forward is that people continue to talk about Mat and share his stories,” Okland added, “because a little bit of the future he wanted can be preserved that way.”

The Los Angeles Police Department is offering a $50,000 reward for information on the hit-and-run driver.

Local news from across Southern California

Friend and comedian Abby Govindan wrote on social media that George "was the funniest person I know hands down, funnier than most career comedians. I told him that every time we talked. George was struck at around 2:20 a.m. Saturday on Beverly Boulevard, and police are asking the public's help for any information which might lead to identifying that motorist.

A white BMW was going eastbound in the number one lane of Beverly Boulevard when it struck the Arizona native, who was walking southbound on Croft Avenue and not in a marked crosswalk, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

The impact caused George to move in an eastbound direction and strike the roadway. The motorist driving the BMW continued east, failing to stop. Paramedics pronounced George dead at the scene. He was later identified by the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

LAPD West Traffic Division detectives urged anyone with information regarding the death to call them at 213-473-0234 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
