The Los Angeles Police Department said on Sunday that detectives are seeking information from the public that would lead to the identification of a hit-and-run driver involved in a collision that killed a 26-year-old pedestrian.

The department said in the statement that a white BMW struck the victim while in an unmarked crosswalk at around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday. The car continued driving and failed to stop after hitting the victim, the department said.

The victim was declared dead at the scene shortly after paramedics arrived.

The department didn’t disclose the victim’s name in the statement, but identified the pedestrian as “a 26-year-old resident of the state of Arizona.”

George’s LinkedIn page shows the podcaster attended college at the Arizona State University.

Local police said a reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members who provide information that leads to the identification of the hit-and-run driver.

Later on Saturday, Okland revealed that she George “recorded one more episode” together that was slated for release this week, but added the show “will likely be put on hold.”

“I know in years to come I’ll feel so lucky that there’s so many recordings of Mat’s laugh to revisit. I am not ready to talk about everything, or to have to use past-tense to describe him,” she said.

“I think you all knew within 10 seconds of listening to him how vibrant, loving, accepting, and wonderful Mat George is. This community made him so happy. Your words and support made him so happy. Thanks for talking about him,” she added.

Mat George, She Rates Dogs Podcast Co-Host, Dead at 26 After Hit-and-Run Accident

Yahoo Entertainment 19 July, 2021 - 06:11am

Mat George, who co-hosted the popular podcast She Rates Dogs, died in the early hours of Saturday, July 17. He was only 26 years old.

The late star's co-host Michaela Okland confirmed his passing in a statement shared on Twitter.

"I would rather you guys here [sic] this from me than a news article," she began her post. "Mat was killed in a hit and run last night. I don't really have any other words right now. I wish I could contact everybody who knows him personally but the news is already out and I just can't do it right now."

According to CBS Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department reported that a pedestrian was struck by a white BMW and killed in a hit-and-run while walking in an unmarked crosswalk on Saturday morning around 2:20 a.m. in the Beverly Grove area of Los Angeles. Authorities said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles coroner's office identified the victim as Mathew Thomas George, which E! News has verified.

Additionally, we have reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department for our own confirmation of the incident but we have yet to receive a response. Per CBS Los Angeles, law enforcement is asking for the public's help in finding the motorist who struck the podcast host.

Following the tragedy, Michaela shared a separate post thanking people for their support.

"Thank you to everybody who's reached out, I'm really sorry but I probably won't respond for awhile even if we are close," she wrote on Twitter. "And thank you so much to everybody telling stories and sharing how he impacted you. Whenever you think of him in the future, please do talk about him."

She also took to the She Rates Dogs podcast Twitter page to note, "Mat and I recorded one more episode that was meant to come out Tuesday but it will likely be put on hold."

"I know in years to come I'll feel so lucky that there's so many recordings of Mat's laugh to revisit," her message continued. "I am not ready to talk about everything, or to have to use past-tense to describe him. I think you all knew within 10 seconds of listening to him how vibrant, loving, accepting, and wonderful Mat George is. This community made him so happy. Your words and support made him so happy. Thanks for talking about him."

In another post, Michaela wrote just how touched she was by everyone's responses.

"So many of the kind messages I've gotten note the fact that you all 'didn't know mat in real life', but everybody who supported him truly meant more than you realize," she said. "He'd send me screenshots of your sweet messages, he shed tears when people told him he had helped them through issues (especially LGBT+ related). He referenced DMs from you all the time and how much it made his week & fueled his joy. You really did know him. He shared so much because he felt the people who listened to him were his friends."

POLICE are hunting for the driver involved in a hit and run that killed beloved podcaster Mat George in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Police Department is offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the identity of the driver.

She Rates Dogs podcaster Mat George, 26, was struck and killed in around 2:30AM on Saturday when a driver of a white BMW rammed into him and fled the scene.

His co-star Michaela Okland made the announcement on Twitter.

"I would rather you guys here this from me than a news article. Mat was killed in a hit and run last night," she tweeted. "I don’t really have any other words right now.

"I wish I could contact everybody who knows him personally but the news is already out and I just can’t do it right now."

Mat George reportedly wasn’t crossing the street at a marked crosswalk.

The BMW continued eastbound without stopping, the LAPD said.

George was pronounced dead at the scene.

GEORGE WORRIED HE WOULDN’T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY IN PODCASTING

George told the outlet he was worried he wouldn’t be able to make enough money to sustain himself as a podcaster, but he knew if he didn’t try he’d regret it.

“So I did it,” he said. “I packed up my apartment and left my friends in Arizona to move to LA and start SheRatesDogs the Podcast with my best friend, Michaela Okland.

“With this being the biggest risk I’ve ever taken, I was understandably a nervous wreck. 5 months later I can honestly say that I am SO happy that I did this.”

Back in December, he dished on his love for his job in the media industry, after leaving his career as a medical scribe behind.

“Before switching from a life that was going towards medicine to a life in entertainment there were a lot of questions going through my mind. Some questions included was it worth it? Am I sure this is what I really wanted?” he told Shoutout Arizona.

“Oh my gosh I’m so sorry Mat was such a wonderful person and will be greatly missed,” one commenter wrote on Okland’s post.

“Mat was such a beautiful kind person, this is so heartbreaking my god. Rest in Peace king,” added another.

A third wrote: “Never met him in person, but he was always a bright spot on my timeline. His vulnerability and humor made me feel a little more at home in my own skin.

“This is tragic news and I’m sorry for such a sudden loss of what seemed like an incredible guy.”

Named after Okland’s popular social media page, the “She Rates Dogs” podcast focuses on “the journey and the mishaps of dating men”.

The podcast also shares general life advice and commentary on trending issues.

George, an alum of Arizona State University, boasted a loyal Instagram and Twitter following of nearly 80,000 people.

George also used his platform to share his experiences as a gay man and to campaign for equality for the LGBTQ+ community.

“While this is all fun for me, I realized that I could actually make a difference with this,” he continued.

“Growing up and being in the closet, I never knew anyone or heard about anyone who had similar experiences and fears that I had.”

GEORGE: I’VE ‘MADE A DIFFERENCE’ FOR LGBTQ COMMUNITY

“My hopes for my Twitter account and SheRatesDogs the Podcast is to share my stories and make LGBTQ+ people all across the world feel like they’re not alone,” George said.

“The most rewarding moments are when members of the LGBTQ+ community reach out to me and tell me what a difference I’ve made in their lives.”

MAT GEORGE GIVES MICHAELA OKLAND A SHOUT OUT

When interviewed by Shoutout Arizona just months before his death, Mat George was asked who he would give his own shoutout to for helping them in their lives and career.

Mat chose his She Rates Dogs cohost Michaela.

"It wouldn’t be right to tell my story without the inclusion of the beautiful, hilarious and talented Michaela Okland. My POGGERS best friend, Co-Host, former roommate and creator of the whole She Rates Dogs idea."

"Michaela started the She Rates Dogs twitter and Instagram account a little over a year ago. It was an account that called out men who messaged women disturbing messages via tinder, texts or DM’s."

"Not only has she given me an opportunity to chase my dreams, but she’s also been a friend I can go to about anything without the fear of being judged. She has been my rock throughout the past few years and I’m so fortunate to have met her while attending ASU."

GEORGE STARTED SHARING EXPERIENCES AS A GAY MAN DIFFERENTLY AFTER COLLEGE (part 2)

"Growing up and being in the closet, I never knew anyone or heard about anyone who had similar experiences and fears that I had," he continued.

GEORGE STARTED SHARING EXPERIENCES AS A GAY MAN DIFFERENTLY AFTER COLLEGE (part 1)

The 26-year-old podcaster said he wasn't as open as being a gay man until he joked about his experiences on Twitter.

"Towards the end of my college days at Arizona State University I started to share my experiences as a gay man with different people I was close to," he told Shootout Arizona in December.

"Their reactions made me realize that a lot of these stories were funny to others, which then gave me more confidence to start sharing them with even more people. Eventually I started to tweet about them on my personal twitter account and people loved them."

"I then began to fall into comedy twitter, and started tweeting about different memes, trends and other funny topics that allowed me to show my creative side. While this is all fun for me, I realized that I could actually make a difference with this."

GEORGE LEFT MEDICINE TO PURSUE COMEDY

Mat George was studying to go into medicine when he decided to make a career switch.

“I knew it was risky but I also knew that if I didn’t try I would never stop wondering what could’ve been,” he told Shoutout Arizona.

“So I did it. I packed up my apartment and left my friends in Arizona to move to LA…. with this being the biggest risk I’ve ever taken, I was understandably a nervous wreck."

FANS CONTINUE SHARING PRAISE OF GEORGE

After Michaela Okland said she was taking a break from social media following the murder of her co-host Mat George by a reckless driver, fans poured their condolences and support of the She Rates Dogs podcasters.

"I never knew Mat other than seeing his tweets & y'all talking. Even just hearing his name instantly made me think of my brother, who passed away at 18yrs old on 10/31/13. I cannot imagine what you, his family and friends are going through right now. Saying sorry isn't enough," wrote one person.

"No need to respond. Ever. The banter between you and Mat was something I’ve enjoyed immensely. Hang in there. I lost my college girlfriend to a car accident and my college best friend to a ruptured spleen at a fraternity slip and slide about a year later. It still hurts…," wrote another.

"I'm so sorry, Michaela. I was just telling my boyfriend about Mat's attempt to get on Love Island and sharing a good laugh about my favorite moments on the podcast. Sending love to you and all of Mat's close friends and family," wrote someone else.
