Team USA to take on Spain as Jayson Tatum looks to build on a breakout performance

Celtics Wire 02 August, 2021 - 01:01pm

During the quarterfinal draw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Team USA received a date with the Spanish. In a rematch of multiple Olympic Gold Medal games, the Americans will take on Spain on Tuesday at 12:40 a.m. Eastern time.

It’s now single elimination for the US as they look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday in Japan. For Celtics star Jayson Tatum, the final group stage game against the Czech Republic proved to be a turning point. Despite struggling early in pre-Tokyo friendlies and early on in the Olympics, the NBA All-Star wing found his touch to the tune of 27 points in a 35-point win over the Czech Republic.

It took Tatum a second to get going, but he will now look to carry his improved form into the knockout stage. “A new environment, new basketball, different style of basketball, the rules are different, playing on a new team, it’s a lot of things,” said Tatum when asked about why it took him some time to find himself. “But I was never worried, never concerned. I knew that shots would fall eventually and start to feel good about yourself, and then it’s just basketball.”

“Obviously he’s more confident, but I think he makes better choices, decision making wise,” Team USA head coach Gregg Popovich said on Saturday. “He didn’t do that at the very beginning in the league. He was just a scorer. Now he is more valuable because he does the other things. He’s starting to rebound. We’ve been telling him we’re not that big, so we do need him on the board.”

Tatum will look to help lift the US into the semifinals, where they would take on the winner of Australia and Argentina.
