Storm Shadow Claims His Name in the Final Trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

tor.com 20 July, 2021 - 12:01am

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins comes out this week, but Paramount has squeezed in one last trailer for the ninja origin story. It doesn’t offer a ton of new footage, but does lean a little more on the traumatic backstory of Snake Eyes (Henry Golding), and reminds us who Andrew Koji is actually playing: “Call me Storm Shadow,” he intones, very seriously.

While a previous trailer was a little more tailored to those of us who don’t speak fluent G.I. Joe, this one focuses a bit more about the relationship between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow—and offers a few hints as to why Snake Eyes might get himself mixed up with an ancient order of ninjas in the first place. (I mean, why not?) The praise saying it’s the best G.I. Joe movie yet might be somewhat dubious, but Snake Eyes does look like fun. Here’s the official summary:

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honor and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him. Based on the iconic G.I. Joe character, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins also stars Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Tahehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.

Snake Eyes is—in theory—the beginning of the next round of G.I. Joe media, which includes a Lady Jaye TV show and another mysterious spinoff movie. The G.I. Joe Cinematic Universe is probably not far off, depending on how well this movie does.

Snake Eyes opens in theaters this Friday, July 23rd.

Paramount Pictures has released the final trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, which showcases the long-awaited story of G.I. Joe’s most enigmatic team member.

Starring Henry Golding, the trailer’s opening conflict showcases Snake Eyes professing that he’s not a murderer. Shortly after, he finds himself embraced by a group of 600-year-old Japanese warriors called the Arashikage, after saving their heir’s life. While there, he learns the ways of ninja warriors in addition to acquiring something he’s never had — a home. Soon after, when secrets and his past resurface, things become complicated for the G.I. Joe assassin.

Snake Eyes Final Trailer Teases Tommy's Storm Shadow Transformation

Screen Rant 19 July, 2021 - 08:54am

The film began development in mid-2018 after Paramount's failure to continue the G.I. Joe franchise with a threequel and will take the soft rebootquel approach Bumblebee successfully used for the Transformers series. Putting together a cast with Henry Golding starring as Snake Eyes, production got underway in late 2019 and wrapped in early 2020, though due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic saw its release date delayed multiple times. As the release is finally right around the corner, Paramount is looking to build anticipation for the action-thriller.

With just a few days to go until the film hits theaters, Paramount Pictures has unveiled the final trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. In addition to review quotes from journalists, including our very own Joe Deckelmeier, promising an exciting outing, the new video teases at Tommy's journey to become the titular hero's on-again-off-again archenemy Storm Shadow. Check out the exciting final trailer below:

From the time he was first announced to star in the film, audiences have known and been preparing to see Koji become Storm Shadow for the G.I. Joe origin movie. Given the character acts as an antagonist to the military team, but primarily an archenemy to his ninja former blood brother Snake Eyes, the story was going to necessitate a turn to the dark side for the character, but the trailer's confirmation of said change coming in Snake Eyes might prove a bit too soon of a reveal. With previous trailers featuring plenty of footage of Koji's Tommy fighting in white garb akin to the character's original outfit, it seems likely this change will at least come some time prior to the end of the film.

Even if this change is saved for a cliffhanger finale, it may come as a nice tease for fans to know Koji will become the villainous Storm Shadow in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Additionally, the review quotes featured in the trailer should prove enticing for some concerned about the film's quality after its lackluster predecessors. Luckily for fans, the wait is almost over to see if the film can clear that low bar set as it arrives in theaters this week.
