What is Jelly scrolling effect?

9to5Mac reports that users (including The Verge's Dieter Bohn) have noticed a "jelly scrolling" effect where one side of the screen scrolls at a different rate than the other, producing a wobble occasionally noticeable in portrait view. The iPad mini 6 may have an issue with the way it refreshes the display while scrolling, with one side seemingly updating at a slightly different speed than the other, creating a "jelly" effect.

The iPad mini 6 introduced an updated display to the compact tablet design, but it appears to be undergoing some teething issues. On close inspection, it appears that there is a limited "jelly scrolling" problem with the tablet.

Highlighted by Dieter Bohn of The Verge on Twitter, the left-hand and right-hand sides of the screen are updating out of sync with each other, when used in a portrait orientation. The effect, which has occasionally cropped up in devices in the past, is especially noticeable in situations such as pages of text, or where large patterns across the entire screen move up and down.

A video has been published showing the phenomena with a webpage scroll, with the right-hand side updating a hair before the left side. However, the video is in slow-motion to exaggerate the effect for demonstration purposes.

According to Bohn, the effect is barely observable, but does surface "every now and then." Furthermore, the issue doesn't manifest when using the iPad mini in a landscape orientation, meaning it only affects portrait usage.

While it is plausible that there could be a hardware problem with the display panel itself, it is also possible that Apple could create a software fix for a future iPadOS update to remedy the situation.

Apple has yet to comment on the iPad mini display discovery.

The iPad mini's scrolling is the latest touch interface issue to have surfaced for Apple. In May, users complained about the new Siri Remote for the Apple TV 4K, as a gesture for the circular trackpad was causing problems when attempting to scrub through media.

I have not noticed this on mine yet

Oh man that would drive me nuts lol.

They are holding it wrong... ;)

Apple's 2021 iPad drops to $299 at Amazon | Engadget

The basic design of the iPad hasn't changed much in recent years, but the under-the-hood upgrades are particularly notable this year. The tablet now uses an A13 Bionic chip that's reportedly 20 percent faster than in the previous iPad, making it a better fit for gaming or creative tasks. This may also be a good pick for an era of remote work and virtual friend visits, as an ultra-wide 12MP front camera offers Center Stage to keep you in view as you move around.

Just don't expect a revamp on par with the new iPad mini or 2020's iPad Air. You won't find an all-screen design, USB-C, second-generation Pencil support or an improved rear camera. This is for anyone who wants a no-frills tablet that should still last a long while — if that's all you're looking for, you'll probably be happy.

Apple’s iPad Pro may finally go landscape with future refreshes

The Indian Express 25 September, 2021 - 11:34pm

Apple could be finally looking to make the iPad Pro devices landscape default.  A new leak by Twitter user Dylan (@dylandkt) suggests that the brand could be giving the next iPad Pro a horizontally placed camera, along the longer edge of the tablet.

The leaker doesn’t mention whether the change will be implemented in the immediate next iPad Pro or a later release, but says the change is “in the works.” Check out the tweet below.

Future iPad Pro’s will feature a horizontal camera placement and a horizontally placed Apple logo on the back. Apple will make landscape mode the default for iPad Pro usage. I have not confirmed whether the next generation model will have this feature but it is in the works.

— Dylan (@dylandkt) September 23, 2021

The brand is also expected to turn the logo on the back by 90 degrees too, to match the landscape orientation. However, the Magic Keyboard, perhaps the most used accessory along with the iPad Pro already features a landscape logo on the back.

Apple has been positioning the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement for the last few years, something even further cemented by the inclusion of the brand’s M1 chip in its latest iteration. With all that firepower, the iPad Pro is no more a handheld media device, but a more traditional performance-oriented machine.

So, it would only make sense for the company to design the iPad Pro for landscape usage over portrait use. The new layout would also mean a more natural design fit with accessories like the Magic Keyboard case.

iPadOS has also added mouse support now, with the Magic Keyboard getting its own trackpad. Making a landscape orientation practically feel like how the iPad Pro is supposed to be used. This is also supported by most of  the iPad Pro’s media images which show the tablet in a landscape orientation.

Original Super Smash Bros. Could Get New Life Through Switch Online

9to5Mac 24 September, 2021 - 02:03pm

N64 games coming to Switch is definitely great news. The initial pool of games will be pretty small, but Nintendo has plans to add more N64 games over time. One wonders if Nintendo will add the original Super Smash Bros. from the N64 to Nintendo Switch Online. Although the NSO game library tends to favor singleplayer games, it's become increasingly friendly to online multiplayer. Online multiplayer was initially a major selling point for the N64 and Sega Genesis games joining NSO. If that's the case, it'd be fantastic to get an NSO re-release of Super Smash Bros. with online multiplayer.

Nintendo just so happens to have the perfect venue to deliver Smash 64 with online multiplayer. Nintendo Switch Online may not always have perfect connection, but it still serves two fantastic purposes: Making retro games available to Switch owners, and enhancing those games with new ways to save and new online components.

The latest Nintendo Direct showed that NSO's version of Star Fox 64 will have online multiplayer, so giving Smash 64 the same treatment should be pretty easy. Besides, since Smash 64 was one of the N64's best-selling games, it just seems logical that it'd join the fun alongside other N64 classics like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, both of which are bound for NSO.

Nintendo may not have announced Smash 64's inclusion in the N64 NSO expansion yet, but it seems pretty likely. The first Super Smash Bros. is such an important part of the N64's legacy that it's hard to imagine Nintendo skipping the game as it expands NSO's library. Since there's other N64 games confirmed to join NSO after the N64 expansion launches, it could take a few months to show up, but ideally it'll arrive sooner or later. With Smash Ultimate finishing its DLC lineup, Nintendo would be wise to offer fans some classic Smash to celebrate Smash Ultimate's success.

Super Smash Bros. released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64.
