Saints Release RB Latavius Murray, Per Source

Canal Street Chronicles 08 September, 2021 - 06:00am

Saints release their RB 2, Tony Jones Jr. will fill his shoes

Saints are releasing RB Latavius Murray, per source. They asked for a pay reduction yesterday and he refused. Murray is coming off his best season, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and 7.7 yards per catch.

This potential move was expected among many but for others, this comes as a surprise. Murray had a rough training camp with not many big plays and a costly turnover in the preseason. Tony Jones Jr. flashed and looks like the next jackpot UDFA RB Sean Payton has found. In the preseason, Jones had 12 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Murray was coming off his best season with the team averaging 4.5 yards per carry and tallying 656 yards and four touchdowns. It shouldn't take long for Latavius Murray to find his next suitor with some good football still to be played.

New Orleans Saints announce roster moves

NewOrleansSaints.com 08 September, 2021 - 06:00am

Catch the Week 1 battle between New Orleans and Green Bay at TIAA Bank Field

Trufant, 6-0, 190, was originally selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Washington. In eight seasons with Atlanta and Detroit, Trufant has appeared in and started 103 regular season games, posting 346 tackles (286 solo), 83 passes defensed, 14 interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles, six sacks and three special teams stops. The Tacoma, Wash. native has also appeared in two career postseason contests with two starts, recording nine tackles (eight solo) and two passes defensed. In 2020, Trufant appeared in and started six regular season games for Detroit where he tallied 20 tackles (16 solo), four passes defensed, one sack and one interception.

In two seasons with New Orleans, Murray appeared in 31 regular season games with 15 starts and helped the club capture their third and fourth consecutive NFC South titles in 2019 and 2020. The nine-year veteran rushed for 1,293 yards on 292 carries with nine touchdowns while adding 57 receptions for 411 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

New Orleans Saints to release veteran backup RB Latavius Murray

Saints Wire 08 September, 2021 - 06:00am

We expected the New Orleans Saints to sign free agent cornerback Desmond Trufant after a successful tryout, but the corresponding roster move is a little surprising. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that the Saints will release backup running back Latavius Murray on Tuesday, which was confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

It’s surprising because Murray had played well in his first few years with New Orleans, and the decision to keep him during final roster cuts last week suggested the Saints thought he still had something left to give. Schefter adds that the Saints approached Murray about a pay cut, but he declined — which makes sense considering how few slices of the pie are left to go around just days before the season starts. It’s a shame the Saints didn’t get a draft pick or any other compensation before letting Murray go, but his poor performance in preseason likely quieted any interest.

So now Murray will go looking for a new team. Maybe he ends up following the path of the player he replaced by signing with Mark Ingram’s old Baltimore Ravens squad, which has dealt with a rash of injuries at the position in recent weeks. There are other openings around the league.

As for New Orleans: it’s the Tony Jones Jr. show behind Alvin Kamara. They also have Dwayne Washington and Ty Montgomery on the roster if more backs are needed down the line. Cutting Murray at this point saves more than $3.1 million in salary cap, but it remains to be seen what Trufant signed for, which help balance that out. Stay tuned for additional roster moves in the days ahead.

Saints Rumors: Latavius Murray Released After Refusing Pay Cut

Bleacher Report 07 September, 2021 - 09:25pm

Running back Latavius Murray reportedly did not want a pay cut from the New Orleans Saints and is now a free agent.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Saints released the veteran when he refused to accept a pay cut when the team asked. Murray spent the past two seasons with New Orleans after stints with the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings.

Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk noted the $2.95 million in base salary the UCF product was scheduled to make in 2021 "is a lot to pay a backup running back" but suggested he will generate interest given his showing last season.

"I'm willing to discuss an opportunity with anyone interested in me," Murray told USA Today's Josina Anderson. "At the same time, Baltimore is a team that was impacted by injuries, has a great chance of winning and a great coaching staff. I just want to get to work."

Murray tallied 656 yards and four touchdowns on the ground while adding 23 catches for 176 yards and another score through the air in 2020. While Alvin Kamara was New Orleans' unquestioned lead back, Murray provided a change of pace and the physicality to run through arm tackles in the box.

He recorded 4.5 yards per carry in 2020—his highest mark since he was a rookie in 2014.

Smith pointed to the Baltimore Ravens as a potential landing spot given season-ending injuries to J.K. Dobbins and Justice Hill in the backfield, although Schefter reported the AFC North team signed Le'Veon Bell to the practice squad on Tuesday.
