Nick Jonas Crashes His Bike & Has To Be Taken To The Hospital In ‘Olympic Dreams’ Special

Hollywood Life 22 July, 2021 - 10:00am

The Jonas Brothers face off in several Olympic challenges in their Olympic Dreams special, which aired July 21 on NBC. Things take a shocking turn during the bike race between Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas. While coming out of a turn on the course, Nick’s bike spins out of control. The bike slides out from under him, and Nick hits the ground on his left side hard.

The crash causes Joe and Kevin to tumble into the ground as well after being unable to avoid Nick and his bike. Nick is able to stand up after the crash, but Kevin tells him not to walk. The medic is called to assess. Kevin asks his younger brother if he is okay. “Yeah, I think my rib is f**ked up, too,” Nick replies.

The ambulance arrives at the track. Nick is put on a gurney and put into the back of the ambulance. Kevin and Joe tell Nick they will meet him at the hospital. As he is wheeled away, it’s clear that Nick is in an immense amount of pain.

At a press conference after the crash, Nick explains what happened on the bike track. “I always give 110 percent and sometimes that gets you the gold. In this case, it got me a fractured rib, a bruised tailbone, and a hospital dinner. But I’m recovering,” Nick says.

The Olympic Dreams special was actually filmed back in May 2021 while Nick was still filming The Voice. Just days after being hospitalized, Nick appeared live on The Voice. He addressed his injury and told viewers that he was doing fine. The singer later talked more extensively about what happened on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

“We all looked at each other beforehand because the race was pretty intense,” Nick told Seth Meyers. “We said, ‘Just take it easy, let’s not overdo it.’ So I was being responsible, I wasn’t being overly competitive. But something happened. It was one of those things where the handlebars kind of got out from under me and I just tumbled.”

Jonas Brothers Destroy Iconic Olivia Rodrigo, Harry Styles Songs On The Tonight Show 22 July, 2021 - 10:00am

Watch them hilariously attempt Jimmy Fallon's Sing It Like challenge

The Jonas Brothers performed different covers under various comedic voice impressions in Jimmy Fallon’s Sing It Like challenge on Monday (July 20).

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host kicked off the hilarious game by doing a cover of Gotye's “Somebody That I Used to Know,” but singing it “like you just got the rubber bands on your braces tightened." Joe performed Harry Styles’s “Watermelon Sugar,” singing like he was walking across hot coals and hitting high notes as if he was in pain. Nick then sang Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” but as if he got his tongue pierced, so he was barely comprehensible. Lastly, Kevin sang Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open” as if he was trying to communicate a secret message with his eyes in a really deep voice.

The brothers concluded the challenge with a trio performance of their own hit “Sucker” — but playing as if they were a Chuck E. Cheese animatronic band. Kevin donned a mask while playing a small bass guitar that looks like it’s made for kids; Joe brought out an action figure to the camera while playing his acoustic guitar.

Joe, Kevin, and Nick also appeared on The Tonight Show to promote their upcoming Olympic Dreams Featuring Jonas Brothers special. With the U.S. Olympics team pumped in preparation for the games and opening ceremony in Tokyo, the Jonas Brothers are competing with each other in their own personal games, including in the fields of track, gymnastics, and BMX biking.

“We got the opportunity to pretend we’re Olympic athletes for a week or so and about a day training with incredible athletes and then actually compete [against] each other,” Kevin said. “And they filmed it for the audience at home to laugh at us.”

Nick actually broke a rib during the filming process and confirmed he is doing “a lot better.” “It’s not all that exciting,” he admitted. He detailed that they had real Olympic athletes training them, and the brothers initially felt confident because the coaches claimed the BMX biking was set at the difficulty level for 11-year-olds. However, they were spared from the knowledge the athletes have been training in BMX since they were 3 or 4 years old, thus being experts.

“It couldn’t have been worse timing, because that week following, we shot the music video for our song with Marshmello, ‘Leave Before You Love Me,’ Nick said. “I was hosting the Billboard Music Awards and performing with the brothers, and we had The Voice finale in the same week.”

The Olympic Dreams special will premiere tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and Peacock. The special features Olympic athletes coaching the brothers: Sydney McLaughlin and Sanya Richards-Ross in track, Laurie Hernandez and Nastia Liukin in gymnastics, and Alsie Willoughby in BMX biking.

Nick Jonas hospitalized for fractured rib in 'Olympic Dreams' special after crashing bike

Entertainment Weekly News 22 July, 2021 - 08:17am

Nick, Joe, and Kevin trained with professional athletes and competed against each other in Olympic events, including gymnastics, track, and biking. It was the latter that brought the pain for the singer and Voice coach.

The brothers had been racing on BMX bikes around an intense track. As they rounded a curve, Nick's bike spun out. Joe and Kevin nearly avoided a three-guy bike pileup, but the producers of the special had to call an ambulance, as Nick was visibly in pain.

"I think the tape kind of speaks for itself," Nick said in a makeshift press conference tacked on at the end of the special. "I always give 110 percent, and sometimes that gets you the gold. In this case, it got me a fractured rib, bruised tailbone, and a hospital dinner. But I'm recovering. Thanks for asking, next question."

Two-time Olympian in BMX racing Alise Willoughby coached the brothers ahead of the BMX track event. "It's important for the brothers to understand the body mechanics of how to get over the jumps because it applies to every single one of them on the track," she prefaced during training.

Olympic Dreams Featuring Jonas Brothers can also be watched directly on or through Peacock.

But, it's all in good fun. Joe and his brothers, Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote their special, Olympic Dreams Featuring Jonas Brothers. While visiting, Joe joked that the brothers were inspired from all of the recent YouTuber boxing matches.

"We're going to have a big UFC match," he said. "It's gonna be us vs. the Hemsworth brothers. The Hemsworths haven't e-mailed us back yet, but I think it's gonna be big."

Jimmy Fallon responded that maybe there are other Hemsworth brothers they could fight. Quick-witted Joe answered, "A little bit closer to our height as well."

With the Olympics drawing closer, the band also teased their upcoming sporty special. Kevin explained the concept: The brothers trained with Olympic athletes for a week and then competed against each other. But things got a little dangerous when Nick broke his rib. Luckily, he's better now, even though his injury coincided with many jobs, the youngest in the band said.

"We get it, Nick, you're famous," Joe fired back.

The brothers also talked about how they're excited for their upcoming Remember This tour. Nick noted that they were one of the last acts to perform on tour before the coronavirus pandemic, and they're one of the first to get back onstage in front of live audiences.

Nick, Kevin and Joe also discussed their families watching throwback videos of them.

Kevin mentioned how his daughters, Alena Rose, 7, and Valentina Angelina, 4, perceive their dad and his brothers due to their fame. "They see us as the people they saw in Hannah Montana in that one episode we did with her," he jokingly explained about the 2007 Disney Channel episode the band guest-starred on. "They're completely obsessed with that show now. They think we're those people, every day."

"She did say that Nick is the funniest when his hair is puffy, so bringing it back to that Hannah Montana days," Kevin added, referencing Nick's curlier voluminous hair in the late 2000s.

Nick replied, "It's getting puffy once again. It's growing out here, so she can be real happy."
