Phoebe Waller-Bridge Leaves Mr. & Mrs. Smith Series After Creative Clash

ComingSoon.net 07 September, 2021 - 12:40pm

The departure of Waller-Bridge from the upcoming streaming series comes after differences in “creative vision for the series” with Glover, per THR. The decision for the Solo: A Star Wars Story actress to exit is said to have been an amicable decision as there is no bad blood between the two stars. The series is still set for a 2022 release with Waller-Bridge’s role set to be recast.

Waller-Bridge has plenty of upcoming projects, so she won’t be without work. She’s currently filming Indiana Jones 5 alongside Harrison Ford. The actress is also executive producing Killing Eve, which is entering its final season on AMC and BBC.

Meanwhile, Glover is working on the third and fourth seasons of Atlanta for FX. The hit comedy is supposed to return in early 2022.

Amazon's Mr. And Mrs. Smith Series Loses Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Donald Glover Still Attached

Lots of folks were understandably excited when word broke that Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge would be teaming up for an Amazon TV show inspired by the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie movie "Mr. And Mrs. Smith." If you were among the excited, I have some bad news: Pheobe Waller-Bridge has left the series, citing creative differences. Glover, who came up with the idea of turning the film into a show and pitched it to his "Solo: A Star Wars Story" co-star Waller-Bridge, remains the show's co-creator, and is still attached to star.

Donald Glover and Pheobe Waller-Bridge both seem like creative people who like to be totally in charge of what they're creating. Which means it was probably inevitable that the duo would end up having different ideas regarding the "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" series they were set to star in. THR is reporting that Waller-Bridge has left the show after having "a different creative vision for the series than Donald Glover." However, that doesn't mean there's bad blood between the two, who previously appeared together in "Solo: A Star Wars Story." The THR report adds that "Waller-Bridge and Glover remain friends following what was described as an amicable split." Phew, good to know.

Glover is still involved with the show. He serves as co-creator along with Francesca Sloane ("Atlanta," "Fargo"), who will also serve as showrunner. Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, and Jenny Robins are on board as executive produces. Released in 2005, the "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" film featured the following synopsis:

While details about the TV spin-off are still a bit vague, it was reported that the show would be "a new take and iteration" on the film, which means it'll probably keep the "assassins who are married" idea and run with it. The idea of Glover and Waller-Bridge working together on this show was mighty promising, so having that no longer be an option is certainly disappointing. That said, Glover is an incredible creative force, and I'm sure he's going to bring something fresh and interesting to this concept. It was previously reported that the show would arrive on Amazon sometime in 2022. Whether or not that still happens now that they have to find a new leading lady remains to be seen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge, who originally signed on in the same roles as Glover, "had a different creative vision for the series" than the Atlanta star, but sources say the pair remain friends and her departure from the project was amicable. Her role will now be recast, with the series still on track to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2022.

The initial idea for the series is said to have been conceived by Glover who is still on board alongside Francesca Sloane who is serving as co-creator, showrunner and executive producer. New Regency's Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer are also billed as executive producers on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with production on the series expected to begin next year.

Writing is currently underway on the series, which will act as a reboot to Doug Liman's 2005 action comedy film of the same name, which famously starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The movie followed the explosive adventures of a married couple after discovering that they're both assassins working for adversarial espionage agencies.

Waller-Bridge, Glover and Sloane all have overall deals at Amazon. Glover signed his eight-figure deal with Amazon this year and immediately started staffing a writers room for a potential new series called Hive, rumored to revolve around a Beyoncé-like figure. He's also in post-production on the third season of FX's Atlanta, while the fourth season is in production.

Meanwhile, Waller-Bridge is currently working on Indiana Jones 5. The movie recently added Antonio Banderas to the cast alongside previously-announced stars Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, and Harrison Ford who is returning as the franchise's titular globe-trotting archaeologist, with James Mangold directing.

Amazon’s Mr. And Mrs. Smith Just Lost One Of Its Leads Over Creative Differences

Cinema Blend 06 September, 2021 - 11:39am

Last February, Amazon announced a television reboot of the 2005 movie Mr. And Mrs. Smith. The Internet immediately went berserk, especially when Donald Glover (Atlanta, Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) were reported to be taking over the roles originally played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Unfortunately for fans who wanted to see what would have been a legendary pairing, one of the leads just left the project.

Deadline has confirmed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who received three Primetime Emmy Awards for Fleabag, has officially left the production of Mr. And Mrs. Smith. While Donald Glover originally brought the project to Phoebe Waller-Bridge after meeting on the set of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the duo seemed to develop differing ideas regarding the show’s creative direction. Luckily, there’s no bad blood, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming that the split was ‘amicable.’ While Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s role will have to be recast, the show is still on track to premiere in 2022.

This is far from the end for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, however: she will continue to generate content for Amazon Prime after signing an exclusive production deal. She also co-wrote the script for the next James Bond movie No Time to Die, which will make her the second woman to ever write a Bond film. No Time to Die will also mark the fifth appearance of Daniel Craig as the titular superspy. In addition to writing, Phoebe Waller-Bridge will also get the chance to flex her acting chops in the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film alongside Harrison Ford, Mads Mikkelson, and Antonio Banderas.

While it’s sad to see Phoebe Waller-Bridge go, Amazon’s Mr. And Mrs. Smith still has the odds in its favor. Donald Glover is still on board as co-creator, executive producer, and leading man after signing a general production deal with Amazon. In addition, writer and producer Francesa Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo) will act as showrunner and executive producer. There’s no word yet on who will replace Phoebe Waller-Bridge, but the search is underway.

The original Mr. And Mrs. Smith, directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow), told the story of Jane and John Smith, a seemingly boring couple with a dangerous secret: they’re assassins working for rival organizations. To make matters worse, they’ve been hired to kill each other. While the action comedy received mixed reviews from critics, it was a commercial success and proved to be exceedingly popular with audiences.

While there’s no exact premiere date for Mr. And Mrs. Smith, it’s projected to be released exclusively on Amazon Prime sometime in 2022. In the meantime, you can rent the original on Amazon Prime or Apple+.
