Reddy told The Associated Press that she discussed the possibility with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry during their royal tour of the country in October 2018.
"I remember they'd just been down to the Abel Tasman national park when we sat down and had a drink, and they said that they could imagine living in a place like this and wondered whether we thought it would be theoretically possible. Even possible for them to have a place in New Zealand," Reddy, who acts as the Queen's representative in New Zealand, told the publication.
"Of course, we said sure. It would be fine. There are lots of opportunities to live in New Zealand, but that would be something that they'd have to explore," she added. "They were looking at how they might raise their family. And, obviously, they've made some decisions since."
The publication added that Reddy didn't view it as a formal request, but rather an informal discussion about the couple's hopes for the future.
Markle, Harry, and their son Archie left the UK permanently after they announced their step back from royal duties in January 2020. The couple took a sabbatical on Vancouver Island, Canada, before relocating to California in March 2020.
They bought a home in Montecito, California, in July of that year.
There had been rumors that the couple were considering a move overseas since 2019, with some royal correspondents reporting that a working sabbatical in Africa had been discussed.
Markle and Harry confirmed during their Oprah interview that they had offered to take their step back from royal life in a Commonwealth country such as New Zealand or South Africa, The Associated Press added.

Prince Harry Makes Cheeky Cameo in Meghan Markle's 40th Birthday Video — Plus, the First Glimpse of Baby Lili!
05 August, 2021 - 08:20am
The Duchess of Sussex celebrated her milestone birthday on Wednesday by announcing her 40x40 initiative, encouraging people to commit 40 minutes of their time to support women going back to work. The announcement came with the help of comedian Melissa McCarthy over a video call — and toward the end of the clip, Prince Harry made a surprise appearance.
After McCarthy asked Meghan if she was going to mark her birthday by throwing an afternoon tea party with her beloved chickens, the actress laughed as she noticed Harry outside through the window. Meghan turned to catch her husband, sporting sunglasses, showing off his juggling skills — prompting laughter from McCarthy.
Usually, Prince Harry is doing a different kind of "juggle" as a new father of two. Daughter Lilibet Diana was born on June 4, making 2-year-old Archie a big brother. In the video, a brief glimpse of Lili can be seen in the center of a tri-fold picture frame on Meghan's desk, along with a photo of Archie behind.
"Congratulations, a girl right?" the singer asked Harry. "We just had a little girl 10 months ago now. You're still in the trenches now! How do you manage with two?"
"Two is definitely a juggle," responded the prince.
The playful new video also included McCarthy dressing up in a fascinator and suggesting a Suits reunion, all while Meghan's rescue beagle Guy snoozed on his dog bed behind her desk.
Meghan opened up more about her initiative on the couple's Archewell Foundation website.
"In reflecting on my 40th birthday and the many things I am grateful for, I'm struck that TIME IS AMONG OUR GREATEST AND MOST ESSENTIAL GIFTS: Time with our loved ones, time doing the things we love, time spent learning, laughing, growing, and the sacred time we have on this earth," the mom of two wrote. "Amongst the most valuable gifts of time is also time spent in service to others knowing that it can contribute to incredible change. To that last point, and with my 40th lap around the sun in mind, it made me wonder: what would happen if we all committed 40 minutes to helping someone else or to mentoring someone in need? And then what would happen if we asked our friends to do the same?"
Noting that women are returning to the workforce after leaving in large part due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Meghan noted that "mentorship is one way to help women regain confidence and rebuild their economic strength."
"For my birthday, I have asked 40 friends, activists, athletes, artists, and world leaders to help kickoff a global effort by contributing 40 MINUTES OF MENTORSHIP to support women re-entering the workforce. With this time, I hope they each help someone advance a professional life on her own terms, and, I hope that they inspire countless others to give 40 minutes of their time as well."
A snapshot of participants who have committed to giving 40 minutes of their time to mentor a woman in their community include Adele, Amanda Gorman, Amanda Nguyen, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Gloria Steinem, José Andrés, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau and Stella McCartney.

Meghan Markle celebrated her 40th birthday by announcing the launch of a new initiative to help women back into work.
The Duchess of Sussex's latest campaign is in response to the pandemic - which has resulted in tens of millions of women around the world leaving the workforce.
"I believe mentorship is one way to help women regain confidence and rebuild their economic strength," Meghan said.
"For my birthday, I have asked 40 friends, activists, athletes, artists, and world leaders to help kick off a global effort by contributing 40 minutes of mentorship to support women re-entering the workforce.
"With this time, I hope they each help someone advance a professional life on her own terms... I hope that they inspire countless others to give 40 minutes of their time as well."
Of course, within minutes of the announcement, Meghan was slaughtered for creating a "woke" project that could "do more harm than good".
Meghan Markle is accused of 'mocking' the Queen during 40th birthday video
Some assumed the initiative was nothing more than a "publicity stunt" - all part of her plans to create a "PR empire" while others called out her hypocrisy for "quitting her job" as a royal - conveniently ignoring her media projects with Netflix and Spotify.
And that's where it all stems from - Meghan's departure from the royal family. Now, all of her actions will be perpetually enmeshed with her reportedly broken relationship with the Queen.
But why are we so begrudging to accept the good in Meghan? Even if you disagree with her California-flee (or more fruitlessly, her penchant for avocados) there is no denying her project could help the lives of thousands.
Meghan Markle slammed for 'lecturing' others by TV hosts after 'quitting royal life'
And it's pretty consistent with Meghan's pre-royal life. We've all seen the Duchess' school graduation video from when she was 14 and cheering on her female peers for becoming "proud and confident young women".
I mean, when she was 11 years old she featured on a Nickelodeon programme to challenge a sexist advert for soap.
"I don’t think it is right for kids to grow up thinking that Mom does everything..." Meghan says. "Just about one out of every three commercials is going to say something that’s going to hurt somebody’s feelings.
"If you see something that you don’t like or are offended by on television or any other place, write letters and send them to the right people and you can really make a difference, for not just yourself but for lots of other people."
Beyoncé sends Meghan Markle big birthday wishes with sweet throwback snap
It seems bizarre that all of Meghan's past charity work and philanthropy be overlooked and undermined because she chose Montecito over Buckingham Palace.
And even if Meghan is a wolf dressed in sheep's clothing and her project is purely a selfish PR stunt... does it really matter?
We should be able to distinguish the intent from the consequence. Millions of women around the world could get back into the workplace - I doubt those people will care if Meghan has ulterior motives.
Or would it be better if Meghan didn't use her birthday as a platform to help others? Wouldn't she then be complacent, taking advantage of her platform and privilege?
It seems Meghan is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't - so what can she actually do right?

Meghan and Harry 'nearly moved to New Zealand' before stepping back from royal duties

And on Thursday, Karl Stefanovic and Sophie Walsh couldn't resist mocking the royal couple after Meghan Markle released a 40th birthday message announcing her new initiative to help women get back to work after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sophie, 35, thought it was rich for Meghan to 'lecture' the public about returning to work after she 'quit her job' as a senior royal during the Megxit saga.
'I love that she's lecturing people about getting back to the workplace and she quit her job as a royal after less than two years,' she sneered.
And Karl, 46, noted that the Sussexes were already making millions 'from home' thanks to their deals with Netflix, Spotify and other major corporations.
Taking aim at Meghan's video, he added: 'And to have that dog's life, just lying there in front of the fire that's not on, on a pillow.'
Karl then ridiculed the Duchess' Californian corporate speak, asking: 'Why doesn't she talk normally? [American accent] "To harness the woman's mobility as she works back..." I mean, come on!'
'No wonder Harry's outside juggling!' he said, to which Sophie replied dryly: 'Harry's lost the plot.'
These savage remarks come after Meghan released a video on the Archewell website on Wednesday to mark her 40th birthday.
In the clip, the giggling Duchess spoke to her actress friend Melissa McCarthy about her Hollywood-backed '40x40' campaign urging people around the world to commit to giving 40 minutes of their time to mentor women going back to work after Covid.
At the start of a Zoom-style call in her spotless LA mansion, Meghan told Melissa: 'Because I'm turning 40, I'm asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to help mentor a woman who's mobilising back into the workforce.
'Over two million women in the U.S. alone and tens of millions around the world have lost their jobs due to Covid. And I think if we all do it and all commit 40 minutes to some sort of active service, we can create a ripple effect.'
Melissa repeatedly interrupts Meghan with jokes about other things she could be doing to celebrate her birthday, leaning on her royal links by suggesting a tea party or a yacht party.
At one point the Duchess laughs when asked: 'Are you finally going to do a Suits reunion?' and replies: 'Why would I do a Suits reunion for my birthday?'
But it was Melissa who laughs the loudest at the end of the call when she spots Harry juggling outside the window, much to Meghan's surprise - though the camera was at the perfect angle to spot him.

Meghan celebrated her 40th birthday on Wednesday, August 4 at home in Montecito, California with her husband Harry, 36, son Archie, 2, and newborn daughter, Lilibet. Meanwhile, back across the pond, members of the royal family spent the day sending their well wishes to the duchess—and that includes her cousin-in-law, Princess Eugenie. The princess, who has spent the last several months living at Meghan and Harry’s former home in the UK with her husband Jack Brooksbank and son, took to Instagram to write a special message for the duchess on her birthday.
“To celebrate dear Meghan’s 40th birthday I’m contributing 40 minutes of mentorship to support women re-entering the workforce,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories. “In the past two years, tens of millions of women around the world have departed the workforce. If you can, please join me and commit 40 minutes to community, service or mentorship.” Eugenie, who is very close to the Sussexes, went on to mark Meghan’s 40th with stickers on her Instagram Story, including one that spelled out “Happy Birthday” in rainbow lettering.
Princess Eugenie’s message came just hours after the Duchess of Sussex launched “40×40,” a global initiative dedicated to mentoring women who are returning to the workforce. Meghan announced the initiative on her birthday with a video posted to her and Harry’s Archewell Foundation website. In the clip—which featured comedian and actress Melissa McCarthy—Meghan revealed her birthday wish for the project.
“Because I’m turning 40, I’m asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to help mentor a woman who’s mobilizing into the workforce,” Meghan revealed in the video. “Over two million women in the U.S. alone and tens of millions around the world have lost their jobs due to COVID.” Along with Princess Eugenie, stars like Adele, poet Amanda Gorman, fashion designer Stella McCartney, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, have signed on to support the initiative.

While there haven’t been as many photo ops this year, Meghan Markle’s dresses never disappoint. During the majority of her public appearances in 2021, she has managed to maintain her best-dressed title with an enviable collection of caftan and wrap silhouettes. These aren’t your average frocks, though. Markle often relies on a combination of nature-inspired prints, from the tropical palms on her now sold-out La Ligne dress to the abstract poppies printed on her Carolina Herrera shirt dress.
Usually, floral and landscape-adorned dresses are associated with spring and summer, but Markle’s year-round take on the pattern proves they’ll look just as great come fall or winter.
