The Best PS5 M.2 SSD Options Currently Available - IGN

IGN 30 July, 2021 - 02:10pm

Check out the list below to pick up a compatible PS5 M.2 drive ahead of the update, and make sure to read over the important notes at the bottom regarding some peculiarities with picking an M.2 drive for your PlayStation 5. If you're shopping in the UK, click here to find the best compatible M.2 SSDs.

These are some of the best choices for upgrading your PS5 storage, but keep in mind even if your M.2 SSD meets the PS5 storage upgrade requirements, it still might not be compatible, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment's info. This list is by no means comprehensive, but most of the product pages let you choose from different capacities.

To determine which currently available SSDs meet Sony's requirements, I searched retailers for M.2 SSDs meeting SIE's criteria. The above list is a small sampling.

Additionally, we've reached out to some manufacturers for clarification on which of their current line of M.2 SSDs are compatible with the PS5.

While these SSDs fit into Sony's requirements, Sony says it cannot guarantee compatibility, basically absolving itself of any responsibility if you run into issues by stating "SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products."

Another important note: the SSD MUST have a heatsink. Of the options above, some are available with heatsinks, some are not, but the heatsink changes the height dimensions of the SSD, which in turn could render it incompatible with the PlayStation 5. Sony has a helpful graphic on its PS5 SSD compatibility page to give you a better visualization of the requirements. The WD_Black SN850 with heatsink in the list above comes in below the maximum allowable height, so it's a (probably) a good choice.

PlayStation Plus subscribers are getting a batch of new games this August, which will be available to download starting on August 3. Unlike in previous months, there is no PlayStation 5-exclusive title in August, with all three games available to play on PlayStation 4. All games will be available to PS Plus members through September 6.

The first game on Sony’s list is Hunter’s Arena: Legends, which is available for both the PS5 and PS4. This is probably for the best, as the PS5 remains very difficult to find and, as Legends is a fantasy battle royale game, it’s best played with a large number of players. Specifically, it’s a 30-player PvPvE title, in which players must be prepared to battle both demons and each other.

The two PS4 titles are Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, and Tennis World Tour 2. In Battle for Neighborville, you can play as one of up to 20 playable characters, and you can either team up with friends or battle against them in both local and online co-op. It’s a game that has a surprising amount of content for how simple it appears to be.

Tennis World Tour 2 is, as the name suggests, a competitive tennis title in which you can either play as a famous player or a custom character in career mode to beat the rest of the competition. Like with Battle for Neighborville, Tennis World Tour 2 also lets you play with friends in local or online play, in singles and doubles games.

PS Plus offers three free games every month to subscribers, all of which will remain in your library after being claimed, though you’ll no longer be able to play them if you cancel your subscription (though you can regain access to them if you renew your subscription later). The previous month’s offering, which included A Plague Tale: Innocence and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, will no longer be available to claim on August 2.

Putting the PS5’s 10 million sales in context

To add more context to Sony's announcement, we looked at how quickly some other recent consoles took to sell their first 10 million systems worldwide. While different launch dates and staggered international launches skew some of these comparisons, the data overall shows that the PS5 is selling as fast or faster than some of the most popular consoles of the recent past.

We also looked at newly revealed sales data for PS5 exclusives Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and compared their sales rates to similar early system-sellers on the Switch.

Software sales as a percent of total hardware sales, measured nine to 10 months after launch:

PS4 Firmware 9.0 System Software Update Today (July 30) – Patch Notes

DualShockers 30 July, 2021 - 11:03am

It’s been almost a year since the next generation consoles were released, but Sony is still releasing software updates for the last-gen consoles. We did receive some interesting updates in the past few months, including one which sparked a lot of debate, the removal of the favorite PS4 communities feature.

It’s been a month since the last update for the PS4 was released, and we have received another update today. Although the update is quite small, it does make some interesting changes.

Firstly, players will now be able to see PS5 trophies in PS4 itself. Along with that, there are some changes to groups as well. Group owners can now delete messages, and players will now get a prompt to leave groups in which a player they have blocked is present. Lastly, there are some changes to parental control features as well, as parents will now be notified if their child requests for communication functions.

The complete patch notes of the update can be found below. The patch notes have been obtained from a German version of the email being sent out to players, and it has been translated by Resetera user nano.

Considering that this was a major update (with the version number being a whole number) the number of features added is quite less. The shift in focus towards the PS5 is quite obvious and does make sense, and it’s quite less likely we will see major changes to the PS4 in the near future.

HBO returns to Dish's lineup after a protracted absence | Engadget

The Verge 30 July, 2021 - 01:15am

The resolution follows a major shakeup with HBO's parent, WarnerMedia. In May 2021, AT&T announced that it was spinning off that division and merging it with Discovery in a $43 billion deal. That effectively removed a conflict of interest as AT&T is a direct competitor to Dish in the satellite video service provider space. The parties haven't disclosed the terms of the new agreement.

With an accord now in pace, Dish customers get a free 10-day free of HBO and Cinemax from Aug. 6-15. Dish users can subscribe to the HBO Max ad-free plan for $12 rather than the regular price of $15 per month for up to 12 months if they act before Oct. 27, 2021. They'll get HBO Max access on supported devices like iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV and Fire TV, along with live channels including HBO, HBO Family and HBO Signature. Dish TV customers can also get Cinemax for $10 per month.
