Is today National mac and cheese day?

(Newser) – Many people's initial reaction to the Kraft Mac and Cheese ice cream released in honor of National Mac and Cheese Day on Wednesday was a hard "no"—but reviewers say the combination is a lot tastier than they expected. Amy McCarthy at Eater says the "unhinged" mix of two comfort foods from New York creamery Van Leeuwen is "nothing short of magical." She calls the salty-sweet flavor "uniquely compelling." " The cheese powder combines with Van Leeuwen's rich base, made with milk, cream, and sugar, to produce a buttery flavor that’s only slightly cheesy," she writes.

The recipe includes the cheese powder from Kraft's famous blue mac and cheese boxes—but there are no chunks of macaroni in it. At the Takeout, Marnie Shure and Lillian Ston, who were initially very skeptical, declared the flavor "delightful" and gave it an "A." "It truly tastes like cheesecake to me," Stone says. When the flavor was announced, there was a "public outcry on social media," but it still ended up selling out quickly, NPR reports. Van Leeuwen's website says the limited-edition flavor is now out of stock. (Read more ice cream stories.)

Mac And Cheese Ice Cream Is Here, But Do We Need It?

NPR 16 July, 2021 - 06:00pm

Mac and cheese. It's cheesy, it's creamy, it's warm and buttery. Oh, one more thing — now it's an ice cream flavor. And many people are asking: Why?

"We are living in the last days," comedian Josh Pray said on YouTube. "Is this a terrible idea? Absolutely. Should this have been made? Gosh no. This come from the mind of a first-grader."

The limited-edition flavor, created in celebration of National Mac and Cheese Day by Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, hit stores Wednesday.

It's received its fair share of public outcry on social media, but the cold and cheesy treat is still sold out nearly everywhere.

The ice cream is gluten-free and carries with it Kraft Mac & Cheese's iconic yellow-orange color. Van Leeuwen sells it for $12 a pint alongside its other flavors, which include Earl Grey Tea ice cream and a variety of other vegan options. At least it did — before its site crashed because of the number of people trying to buy it.

"It is definitely cheesy," said Eater writer Amy McCarthy on NPR's Morning Edition. "It's a little funky, a little salty, a little sweet. But altogether I'd just say it just kind of comes together. It's very creamy and buttery and it's a lot better than you think it's gonna be."

i was gonna make a witty caption for this but i don't even have anything man. i'm thoroughly repulsed https://t.co/OGe6iSJlcl

But despite numerous good reviews, much of the internet is not as keen to try the unique flavor.

One thing is for sure, though, it's the perfect excuse to feel like a kid again this summer.

Mac and Cheese Ice Cream Sells Out, 2,000 Pints within an Hour

TMZ 16 July, 2021 - 06:00pm

Here's the deal ... Kraft and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream joined forces to create a limited-edition mac and cheese ice cream flavor and the demand was so great for the dessert debut, the website crashed within 9 minutes and the entire 2,000 pint inventory was wiped out online within the hour.

The ice cream launched Wednesday on National Mac & Cheese Day -- yes, that's a real thing -- and, in addition to online sales, they hawked it in Van Leeuwen's brick-and-mortar shops nationwide. Well, for a brief period, anyway ... we're told it took only 3 hours to sell out of their 9,000 scoops.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

"Holes" star Khleo Thomas was one of the lucky ones to get their hands on the $12 pint ... and ya gotta see his reaction to his first bite!!!

Khleo says Van Leeuwen totally nailed the Kraft Mac & Cheese flavor, something he says he wasn't expecting.

A home cook has offered her simple recipe for the ultimate deep fried mac and cheese bites covered in spicy Cheetos crumbs

1 cup milk (or non-dairy alternative)

1.5 cups assorted shredded cheese (I used cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan)

Flamin' Hot Cheetos Puffs or Crunchy

In a pot over the stove, add butter and flour and mix until it forms a paste - this is called a roux. Then, add your milk and stir gently until thickened.

Add garlic powder, onion powder, and mustard powder (and salt & pepper to taste if you want). Add shredded cheese.

Using KitchenAid Cordless Hand Mixer, mix over stove on lowest setting until cheese sauce is smooth and silky. (Cordless function allows you the flexibility to use the mixer anywhere in the kitchen.

Combine cheese sauce and cooked macaroni, then allow to cool and harden in the fridge for several hours.

Gently blitz Cheetos into coarse crumbs.

Scoop mac & cheese into balls (around golf ball sized), then coat in flour, egg, and then hot Cheetos.

Garnish with chives (optional) and serve hot.

Audrey - who created the recipe to celebrate National Mac & Cheese Day - started by making mac and cheese from scratch.

In a pot, she mixed butter and flour to create a roux, then she added milk and stirred until the creamy sauce thickens.

Next she added the garlic, onion and mustard powders, along with the cheeses.

Using a KitchenAid Cordless Hand Mixer, Audrey blended the cheese over low heat until she created a silky, smooth sauce.

'It's a great hack using an electric mixer to get the silkiest, smoothest cheese sauce possible for an epic mac and cheese,' she explained.
