NFLPA issues statement regarding Richard Sherman arrest, without mentioning him by name

NBC Sports - NFL 14 July, 2021 - 02:33pm

Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman has been jailed without bail in Seattle on a charge of “burglary domestic violence.” The NFL Players Association has issued a statement regarding the situation, without naming Sherman.

“We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved,” the statement explains. “We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.”

It’s unusual for the union to issue a statement regarding an off-field issue involving a player. Sherman serves on the NFLPA’s executive committee.

Patriots can probably rule out Richard Sherman as potential free agent target

The New England Patriots are currently stuck between a rock and a hard place with star cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who’s disgruntled with his contract situation.

Entering the final year of his four-year deal, Gilmore is slated to make just $7 million next campaign, which is criminal for a player of his caliber.

It remains to be seen what’ll happen with Gilmore, but the Patriots have had some comfort knowing they could turn around and sign Richard Sherman, who’s still braving the free agent waters, in the event Gilmore requested a trade before the start of next season.

Well, it would appear Sherman might no longer be an option for the Pats, as the veteran cornerback was booked on Wednesday morning at the Seattle Correctional Facility.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Sherman was arrested on burglary domestic violence charges, with court records confirming that he was jailed without bail.

The Patriots have a history of signing players with shady backgrounds — they signed Antonio Brown when literally no other team would give him a chance — but something tells us they can’t afford such distractions after the massive step back they took in 2020.

Plus, the former All-Pro might get suspended once an investigation concludes.

Washington State Police also are investigating Richard Sherman in connection to a hit and run, and damage to state Department of Transportation property.  State police say that at about 1:00 a.m. PT, they received a report of a single-car incident. A car struck a concrete barrier

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 14, 2021

Assuming that’s the case, Patriots fans can all but rule out the team pursuing Sherman as a potential contingency plan if negotiations with Gilmore fall apart. And for anybody wondering what burglary domestic charges entail, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explained it well.

“Typically, the notion of “burglary domestic violence” refers to someone entering or refusing to leave a house or dwelling within the context of a domestic dispute. For example, someone who gets locked out of a house during an argument with a spouse or significant other and then breaks in potentially has committed ‘burglary domestic violence.'”

Sherman is widely respected around the NFL, and we’d like to think his name will ultimately get cleared. However, the Patriots might not have time to wait around for the investigation to be completed. There’s no telling how long that’ll take, and, if Gilmore requests a trade in the coming days or even weeks, New England can’t be caught with their hands tied.

So, what are the Patriots’ remaining options? Well, when you consider this could all end with Sherman being suspended for the start of next season, Bill Belichick and Co. should probably do everything in their power convince Gilmore to stay.

If that means giving Gilmore a short-term contract that makes him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL or something as simplistic as a lucrative raise, then do it. After all, the free agent market for CBs is currently bereft of elite talent behind Sherman.

Latest On Richard Sherman’s Arrest

profootballrumors.com 14 July, 2021 - 02:23pm

Sherman, a multiple-time Pro Bowler, has spent the last three years with the 49ers. Prior to that, he made his name as the leader of the Seahawks’ Legion of Boom. He’s currently without an NFL home, due in large part to last year’s Achilles tear which limited him to three games.

Details of this week’s incident remain sparse, but Schefter hears that it was prompted by a 2 a.m. phone call from a relative of his partner, alleging that Sherman was trying to force his way into the home. Cops found Sherman outside the house when they arrived. Fisticuffs followed, according to police.

We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved,” the NFLPA said in a statement regarding Sherman. “We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.”

In 2019, his last healthy season, Sherman recorded 61 tackles and three interceptions, earning his fifth career Pro Bowl nod.

Sherman is a bright guy. I’m surprised these events occurred.

he’s really not that bright, the bar in the NFL and the NBA is so low that all they have to do is speak without ebonics or refrain from phrases like “we was” or “let me axe you a question” to be considered as an intellectual

I am 10000% certain Richard Sherman is smarter than you are.

Man standards must be low if you think sherman is “smart”

He’s a Stanford graduate that negotiated his own contract and is VP of the union executive committee….that bar is pretty high, higher than most on this board could reach. Keep up the racist tropes tho

That is disappointing. I always thought very highly of Sherman.

It’s sad the NFL has a domestic violence protocol to activate….

Sorry didn’t mean to comment on yours

I’d have guessed that Richard Sherman was a lot smarter than that!

When he was with Seattle he was known as an intensely fiery hothead that could also play to the crowd. He is about a strong a personality as you will find. And may not take “no” well or be too kind when facing arrest. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened before.

At 2 a.m. in the off-season there may have been some judgement impairing substances like alcohol involved.

I’ve actually seen people act crazier on Starbucks coffee than alcohol.

I always wait for the details. But fighting with cops just doesn’t work out. And he has a lot of young men who look up to him

He’s not as smart as he thinks he is. Just a bit of inflated ego.

unfortunately things like this have become common place in the nfl, cte and constant hits to the head can really make a sane person mentally unbalanced

Don’t give people who do bad things a crutch. Could it be CTE? Of course it could but you have no idea (nor do I) whether that was a contributing factor in this case. What we do know is that Sherman is a hothead who seems to always look for a confrontation. That alone makes this situation unsurprising to me.

It’s sad the NFL has a “domestic violence protocol” to activate….

Shut commenting down Trade Rumors. Are you people reading some of this crap? Trade Rumors did NOT allow commenting on the Trevor Bauer story and yet you ARE allowing some of these idiots. I am white but clearly some posters are white trash idiot punks. SHUT IT DOWN PLEASE!!

PS, Trade Rumors, what does the hypocrisy say about you people. Very bad look don’t you think…assuming thinking is happening.

Thanks for your input Dr. Goebbels. In all seriousness, you can just mute or not read comments on articles that offend you. I don’t see the need in getting all bent out of shape over a stupid comment or two. Most of the time they are looking for the very attention you are giving them. Chill out…

Richard Sherman next NFL team update: Cornerback's 2021 season now in potential jeopardy after domestic violence arrest

SportsLine 14 July, 2021 - 02:22pm

Early last week, SportsLine put out odds on which team free agent cornerback Richard Sherman, a likely future Hall of Famer, would sign with. A return to the Seattle Seahawks was a +250 favorite, followed by signing with the Saints (+300), Raiders (+400) and Cowboys (+600) and a few more on the list. However, no team may want to touch Sherman in the wake of reports he was arrested early this morning in Washington for "burglary domestic violence." Sherman married his longtime girlfriend Ashley Moss in 2018.

This is a developing story, but Sherman was booked into the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle at 6:08 a.m. local time and has been denied bail. No bail obviously indicates the potential seriousness of the crime and Joe Fann of NBC Sports Northwest is reporting that the incident is being investigated as a felony. Under Washington state law, for most felonies a defendant has to be arraigned in court before a bail amount is set -- and courts in Washington weren't open at 6 a.m.

Pro Football Talk reports that "burglary domestic violence" typically refers to someone entering or refusing to leave a house or dwelling within the context of a domestic dispute. The case is sealed, so no other details were immediately available. Despite not having played for Seattle since 2017, Sherman kept a home in the area.

Update: Washington State Police also are investigating Sherman in connection to a hit and run, and damage to state Department of Transportation property. He may also have resisted arrested.

"We were made aware of an arrest last of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved," the NFL Players' Association said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us." Sherman is a vice president of the NFLPA.

While Sherman has been a reported headache as a teammate with the Seahawks and 49ers at times in his stellar 10-year career, this is the first alleged major off-field incident to come to light. The Richard Sherman Family Foundation's Blanket Coverage was formed in 2013 by Sherman to provide students in low-income communities with school supplies and clothing.

The five-time Pro Bowler, five-time All-Pro and member of the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team was limited to five games in 2020 with the 49ers due to injury.

Some team was going to sign him, even if it took an injury to a current cornerback once training camp started. Now, clubs likely will wait until the legal process plays out or Sherman is cleared. He would of course be subject to potential suspension by the NFL should he sign. Commissioner Roger Goodell doesn't have to wait for the legal process to run its course to suspend players. Some owners will refuse to sign Sherman regardless now.

NFL coaches/front office types DREAD the time period in between the final mandatory minicamp in June -- although as a free agent, Sherman obviously didn't attend any team's OTAs -- and reporting to training camp in late July because that tends to be the span when most players find legal trouble in the offseason.

"Free agents are eligible to sign with any team. The league investigates any incident involving law enforcement and if there is a violation of the personal conduct policy the player would be facing discipline," the NFL said in a statement.

Report: Richard Sherman Attempted to Force Way into Family Member's Home, Fought Police

Sports Illustrated 14 July, 2021 - 12:58pm

According to public records, Sherman was booked at 6:08 a.m. local time at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle for burglary domestic violence. Sherman was denied bail.

"The spokesman, who would not confirm the name of the person taken into custody, said a 911 call from the residence was received at 2 a.m. PT. The person calling said that an adult male family member who did not live at the residence was attempting to force his way into the home.

When police arrived, the suspect was located outside the home. He fought with police but was eventually apprehended and taken to a local hospital to be checked but was cleared and then booked into the King County Correctional Facility.

The spokesman said no one in the residence was injured."

ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter also reports that the Washington State Police are investigating Sherman's connection to a hit and run.

"According to the spokesperson, officers showed up to a residence in the Redmond area after receiving a call from the occupants inside the home who claimed a family member who did not live there was trying to break in.

Cops say when they arrived on scene, they identified Sherman as the suspect ... and claim he became uncooperative and combative during questioning.

Sherman allegedly fought with cops so much ... we're told a K9 was deployed to take down the NFL player and help bring him into custody.

Cops say he was taken to the hospital to be looked at for possible injuries before he was eventually booked at the county jail.

There's more ... the Redmond P.D. spokesperson also tells us the Washington State Patrol is involved in the case, after Sherman allegedly crashed his vehicle into a cement freeway barrier before he advanced on foot to the home."

Sherman was drafted in 2011 by the Seattle Seahawks after spending his college years at Stanford University. He spent seven seasons with the team. The 33 year-old moved on to spend three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

During his time in the Pacific Coast Conference, Sherman played both wide receiver and cornerback. He made the transition from wide receiver to corner during spring drills prior to the 2009 season.

Sherman is a free agent ahead of the 2021 season.

Could Richard Sherman's Legal Issues Motivate the Saints to Sign a Veteran Cornerback?

Sports Illustrated 14 July, 2021 - 12:30pm

Adam Schefter reports Sherman was "booked at the Seattle Correctional Facility for burglary domestic violence, per King County records." He was denied bail in the matter, which is considered a felony and occurred at 6:08 AM PT on Wednesday.

Former 2017 first-round pick Marshon Lattimore is handling pending legal issues from a March arrest in Cleveland, Ohio. Lattimore was charged with a 'fourth-degree felony of receiving a stolen firearm" in Cuyahoga County Court Common Pleas Court - a $5,000 bond was set in the case.

Ryan Ramczyk's contract extension helped to increase the Saints cap space to $11,379,424.

Currently, the Saints have several options remaining in free agency at cornerback. Dre Kirkpatrick, 31, visited New Orleans and left without a contract offer. Gareon Conley is another Ohio State alum to pair with Lattimore, like they did with Eli Apple.  He has youth on his side at 26.  John Hendrix called it a "low-risk, high-reward" type of deal.

Sherman's price tag may have made it too expensive for the Saints before his legal problems.

Kirkpatrick's and Conley's market value is higher as a result of Sherman's arrest. It wouldn't be surprising if New Orleans becomes extremely decisive and quickly sign a veteran cornerback before the start of training camp on July 27.

NFL's Richard Sherman jailed on domestic violence allegation

Dan Wetzel, Pat Forde, Pete Thamel

Sherman was booked into the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle just after 6 a.m. on suspicion of so-called burglary domestic violence, according to online records.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Sherman had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. His initial court hearing wasn’t expected until Thursday.

A resident called 911 just before 2 a.m., saying someone was trying to force his way into a home in Redmond, Washington, police said.

A statement from police says officers found Sherman outside the home and he fought with them while being taken into custody, “resulting in a Redmond K9 team being deployed to assist in gaining control."

Police said the Washington State Patrol also was investigating a hit-and-run crash tied to Sherman. Before arriving at the home, he is suspected of striking a cement barrier on a busy state highway in the area and running away from his severely damaged vehicle.

The NFL said in a statement about Sherman that it “investigates any incident involving law enforcement and if there is a violation of the personal conduct policy the player would be facing discipline."

Sherman become a Seattle sports legend during seven seasons with Seahawks. The cornerback was a star in their run to a 2014 Super Bowl victory, making a game-saving play to deflect a pass in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers.

He left the Seahawks after the 2017 season and played three seasons with San Francisco. The 33-year-old is now a free agent.

The NFL Players Association said the union was monitoring the situation.

“We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved,” a union statement said.

Sherman would likely make an initial court appearance Thursday afternoon, said Casey McNerthney, a spokesman for the King County Prosecutor’s office.

Police in Redmond have scheduled a 1:30 p.m. news conference.

Free agent cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested on a complaint of "Burglary Domestic Violence," according to the King County (Washington) court records.

According to online records, Sherman was booked into jail Wednesday at 6:08 a.m. and was denied bail. The case is being investigated as a felony.

The Redmond Police Department said in a statement Wednesday that officers responded to a report of an in-progress burglary and found Sherman "attempting to force entry into a family member’s home." Sherman fought with officers, police said, with a K9 team being deployed during the encounter outside the home.

The Washington State Patrol is also investigating Sherman as part of a separate alleged hit-and-run incident in which he is alleged to have struck a cement barrier prior to arriving at the residence, police said.

Sherman's wife, Ashley Moss, told the Seattle Times that her husband did not hurt anyone during the incident.

“At this time we’re going to make no statements, except he didn’t harm anybody,” Moss said. “My kids were not harmed in the incident. He’s a good person and this is not his character. We’re doing all right, just trying to get him out. I want people to know no one was injured.”

Sherman, 33, spent the last three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

He spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks, becoming one of the league's most feared cornerbacks.

He helped the Seahawks win Super Bowl 48 and he was named a first-team All-Pro for three straight years (2012-14).

Sherman played in just five games last season, with 18 tackles, an interception and a pass defensed.

Since 2016, Sherman has served as a member of the NFL Players Association's executive committee.

“We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved," the NFLPA said in a statement Wednesday. "We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.’’

Sherman in custody for domestic violence case

ESPN 14 July, 2021 - 10:17am

Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman was booked at 6:08 a.m. local time Wednesday at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle and is being investigated for burglary domestic violence, which is a felony charge, according to public records.

Records state he was denied bail, but a spokesman for the Redmond (Washington) Police Department told ESPN that is standard procedure for suspects of domestic violence until they can appear before a judge.

The Washington State Police also are investigating Sherman for a separate incident that happened an hour earlier Wednesday. Sherman is being investigated by the state police in connection to a hit-and-run and damage to state Department of Transportation property, a spokesman told ESPN.

The spokesman for the Redmond PD said a 911 call from the residence was received at 2 a.m. PT. The person calling said that an adult male family member who did not live at the residence was attempting to force his way into the home.

When police arrived, the suspect was outside the home. He fought with police but was eventually apprehended and taken to a local hospital to be checked. After he was cleared medically, he was booked into the King County Correctional Facility.

The spokesman said no one at the residence was injured.

The Washington State Police received a report of a single-car accident at approximately 1 a.m. PT. The car, which was registered to Sherman, had struck a concrete barrier and was abandoned in a nearby parking lot.

In the course of trying to track down Sherman on a blood search warrant, which was sought to determine whether he was impaired related to the hit-and-run, state police then were in touch with Redmond police. They ended up at the scene of the 911 call and identified Sherman on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and he has not yet been criminally charged in relation to the alleged domestic violence or hit-and-run.

Sherman, 33, completed his third season with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Seattle Seahawks.

Sherman also is a vice president of the NFL Players Association's executive committee.

"We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved," the NFLPA said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us."

Sherman has been selected to five Pro Bowls and is a three-time first-team All-Pro in his 10 NFL seasons.

Colts can probably rule out Richard Sherman as potential free agent target

Free agent CB Richard Sherman (Photo by Ralph Freso/Getty Images)

Though their elite individual talents have been continually disrespected this offseason, the Indianapolis Colts clearly have one of the deepest rosters in the NFL.

With that being said, however, if there’s one area that Indy can justify bolstering  before the start of next season, it’s the cornerback position.

It’s unclear if GM Chris Ballard was planning on using some of the team’s $16.7 million in remaining cap space. However, when you consider the latest development concerning the top unsigned free agent, Richard Sherman, that ship has probably sailed.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Sherman was booked early Wednesday morning at the Seattle Correctional Facility on burglary domestic violence charges. According to court documents, the five-time Pro Bowler was denied bail and the case is being investigated as a felony.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 14, 2021

Sherman obviously deserves the benefit of the doubt, but, as we’ve seen in recent years, the league takes domestic violence cases extremely seriously. If a prolonged investigation looms, Indianapolis should either consider signing someone else or roll with their current CBs.

The details of Sherman’s arrest are slowly coming to light, and the latest update from ESPN  suggests the veteran cornerback tried to force his way into a home and allegedly fought with authorities when they arrived on the scene.

We’ve heard no rumors indicating Sherman was close to signing with a team, and this development has all but put his football career on hold. Nobody even knows if the Colts were interested in signing the 33-year-old, but his arrest should end all speculation.

Is that good news for the Colts? Well, it depends how you look at it. Is Xavier Rhodes headed for regression after enjoying a bounce-back year in 2020? At 31 years old, you can’t rule it out. TJ Carrie, meanwhile, is a solid No. 2 option, but could get exposed against taller wideouts.

We have no concerns about Kenny Moore, who’s established himself as one of the premier slot corners. The same, however, cannot be said for Rock Ya-Sin, who will battle to retain his starting job at training camp. What about Marvell Tell and Isaiah Rodgers making a potential impact?

There’s just so much unknown, which is scary to think about. Either way, for as many questions Indy has at cornerback, fans can at least sleep comfortably knowing who the team is planning to trot out there in 2021, because Sherman isn’t happening in light of his arrest.
