The Seattle Kraken used their exclusive negotiating window with unrestricted free agents to start building their roster ahead of Wednesday night's NHL expansion draft reveal.

Sources confirmed to ESPN that Edmonton Oilers defenseman Adam Larsson has agreed to a four-year, $16 million deal with the Kraken and that Florida Panthers goalie Chris Driedger has agreed to a three-year, $10.5 million deal with Seattle.

Both players will count as Seattle's selections from those teams in the expansion draft.

Another pending free agent, Dallas Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, has also been engaged in talks with the Kraken.

Larsson, 28, has rounded into the kind of defensive defenseman the Oilers hoped he'd become when they made a one-for-one-trade with the New Jersey Devils for Taylor Hall in 2016. There were expectations that Larsson would pair well with Edmonton's newly acquired defenseman Duncan Keith, but Larsson opted for a change of scenery.

Driedger, 27, had a breakout season with the Panthers, going 14-6-3 in 23 games with a .927 save percentage and a 2.07 goals-against average. But with the Panthers having to protect Sergei Bobrovsky in the expansion draft due to his no-move clause, and with top prospect Spencer Knight having arrived on the team last season, Driedger was expected to move on.

The Kraken had an exclusive negotiating window with unrestricted free agents from Sunday to Tuesday. They submitted their expansion lists to the NHL on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET. The first roster of Seattle Kraken players will be revealed at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Adam Larsson Seattle Kraken Edmonton Oilers - TSN.ca

TSN 21 July, 2021 - 01:00pm

Adam Larsson is joining the Seattle Kraken.

The former Edmonton Oilers defenceman has signed a four-year, $16 million contract with the expansion franchise ahead of reaching unrestricted free agency next week.

Good work @Frank_seravalli. Larsson has signed a 4 year deal with the Kraken. $4 mil aav. https://t.co/TwIO0VWNP7

Larsson, 28, had four goals and 10 points in 56 games this season with the Oilers.

Oilers general manager Ken Holland said last week that money was set aside for a deal for Larsson to return, but that it was "Adam's decision."

"I'm not pretty confident, but I'm not not confident," Holland said of being able to re-sign Larsson.

Oilers had multiple offers on the table for Larsson, including a 4 and 5 year term. Sense is this wasn't a decision made based on the Oilers being out-bid. Likely Larsson deciding on a change of scenery

Acquired in 2016 from the New Jersey Devils for Taylor Hall, Larsson has 25 goals and 137 points in 603 career NHL games.

He carried a cap hit of $4.17 million on a six-year deal he signed with the Devils in 2015.

Kraken, Adam Larsson agree to four-year, $16-million deal

Sportsnet.ca 21 July, 2021 - 01:00pm

Mark Spector talks about why losing Adam Larsson to free agency leaves a big void on the Edmonton Oilers’ blue line.

The Seattle Kraken have agreed to a four-year, $16-million deal with defenceman Adam Larsson, per Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

As part of expansion rules, the Kraken were allowed to start the free agency signing period early and could negotiate with UFAs — like Larsson who was left exposed by the Edmonton Oilers — starting at 7 a.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Larsson, a defensive defenceman, provided elite results in his own end for the Oilers' blue line last season.

Infamously acquired in a one-for-one swap for Taylor Hall, the fourth pick in the 2011 NHL Draft put up 68 points in 329 games across five seasons in Edmonton.

The 28-year-old Swede was coming off a six-year, $25-million deal signed with the New Jersey Devils in 2015.

NHL expansion draft: Kraken passing on Canadiens' Carey Price, sources say

The Athletic 21 July, 2021 - 12:06pm

The Seattle Kraken are not selecting star Canadiens goaltender Carey Price in the expansion draft, sources tell The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.

Price, 33, waived his no-movement clause over the weekend which allowed the Canadiens to leave him exposed for Wednesday's draft. According to sources, the Kraken will instead take Cale Fleury from Montreal.

Price, who led the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup Final this season, would have come with a cap hit of $10.5 million through the 2025-26 season, a rich price for a goalie whose regular-season numbers suggest he's on the decline. In 25 games in 2021, he posted a 2.64 .goals-against average with a .901 save percentage. In 22 playoff games, he had a 2.28 GAA with a .924 save percentage.

Seattle also opted not to select pending unrestricted free agent Gabriel Landeskog, a source tells LeBrun. Landeskog will be able to explore free agency on July 28 or re-sign with the Avs.

Landeskog, a forward, posted 20 goals, 32 assists and 52 points for Colorado this season.

The Kraken have also landed defensemen Adam Larsson from Edmonton and Calgary captain Mark Giordano.

The expansion team signed Larsson, an unrestricted free agent, to a four-year deal with an annual value of $4 million, a source confirmed to LeBrun.

Larsson was left unprotected ahead of Wednesday's expansion draft, giving the Kraken the chance to enter early negotiations for a long-term deal. The 28-year-old has spent the last five years with the Edmonton Oilers, posting 16 goals, 52 assists and 68 points in 329 games.

After struggling with injuries in 2019, Larsson played in 56 games for the Oilers during the 2020-21 season, averaging just under 20 minutes of ice time.

Giordano is also headed to Seattle, sources confirmed. The 37-year-old captain had 26 points for the Calgary Flames last season, tallying nine goals and 17 assists.

A source also confirmed Seattle will select defenseman Jamie Oleksiak from the Dallas Stars. Olesiak, 28, had six goals and 14 points in 56 games with Dallas last season.

Later on Wednesday, sources confirmed to The Athletic that Seattle has also selected Cale Fleury's brother, Haydn, a defenseman from the Ducks. Other picks confirmed include forward Mason Appleton from the Jets and forward Morgan Geekie from the Hurricanes.
