Space Jam: A New Legacy star Gabriel Iglesias has addressed a controversy regarding the film which saw original character Pepé Le Pew cut from the sequel.
The Looney Tunes character is famous for being on a constant quest for love. He usually appeared paired up with Penelope Pussycat and sometimes Sylvester, mistaking the black cats as skunks, often after they accidentally got a white stripe on their back.
While Terence Nance, the director first attached to the Space Jam sequel, initially shot a cameo scene for the divisive skunk character, after leaving the film, new director Malcolm D Lee ditched it entirely.
The scene reportedly would have seen Pepé be reprimanded for his aggressive flirting. The character would have appeared in the role of a bartender who hits on Penelope (as played by Jane the Virgin actress Greice Santo) by kissing her arm. She then pulls away from the skunk before slamming him into another chair, pouring her drink over him and slapping him.
He later declares that Penelope has filed a restraining order against him before LeBron James warns Pepé that he can't touch other people without consent.
The film's star Gabriel Iglesias – who voices Speedy Gonzales – has now responded to the controversial decision to cut the character and the nature of Pepé Le Pew in an interview with CinePOP.
"You know, years ago growing up watching the cartoons, I just think it was a different time and you don't see things the same way. Times change, views change and for the time I can't say that I ever saw it in a negative light," said Iglesias.
"But based on the climate of today, alright I get it, I see it, okay. It was one of those things where it's a change of times. I don't think that people would intentionally try to make something that was inappropriate. But again, times change and we need to evolve and so unfortunately the character was cut."
Warner Bros has not yet commented on the matter.

In the original 1996 Space Jam, NBA legend Michael Jordan plays himself. Continuing this tradition, in Space Jam: A New Legacy, LeBron James also plays himself. In both films, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the Looney Tunes all play themselves (naturally). Knowing all of that, it makes sense that so many want to know if LeBron's real wife and kids make an appearance in the new film as well.
LeBron's family life is a big focus of the movie, after all: In the beginning, LeBron pushes his sons, Malik and Dom, to focus on basketball and ignore other hobbies in the interest of putting in more work on the court. Though Malik is receptive, Dom would rather program basketball-themed video games. Meanwhile, we meet LeBron's on-screen wife, Kamiyah, who encourages the NBA champion to meet Dom where he is.
Like the idea of the film's sentient, a sinister algorithm that can turn people into toons, the marriage in Space Jam: A New Legacy is pure fiction. Kamiyah is played by Sonequa Martin-Green, who you might recognize as Sasha from The Walking Dead or Michael Burnham from Star Trek: Discovery. In real life, she's married to her Walking Dead co-star Kenric Green, who plays Scott.
Sonequa, of course, says she based her Space Jam character on her real-life counterpart. As she tells Den of Geek:
I just appreciate that you see very clearly that these two have a very beautiful partnership. They co-parent in their family really beautifully and successfully. I love that the success of the family couldn’t happen without Kamiyah. And it’s something that you don’t really see too much of in the original film, right? This family dynamic and the family itself being the root of the story is something new to this iteration. I just loved it. I was so moved by it and I really do believe that it’s paying homage to the real James family and Savannah, Queen James herself.
That Savannah is Savannah Brinson James, LeBron's real-life wife of eight years, though they've known each other for a lot longer. Savannah and LeBron were high school sweethearts before he went on to NBA fame. The couple has three kids: LeBron James, Jr. (called Bronny), 16, Bryce Maximus James, 14, and Zhuri, 7.
Again, they're professional actors: Khris Davis of Atlanta plays Malik, Cedric Joe of Modern Family plays Dom and a newcomer, Harper Leigh Alexander, plays daughter Xosha. But they did try for lookalikes.
“Yes, we cast actors that kind of looked like my family,” LeBron revealed on the Smartless podcast. "My boys are 16 and 14. They only care about how cool that the person that’s playing them in the movie looks. ‘Dad, does he look like me? Is he wearing my hair style? Is he dressing the right way? I don’t want somebody playing me and not being me.’"
So there you have it. How Bronny, Bruce and Zhuri would do in algorithmically created cartoon basketball games where the rules are "loony" remains to be seen.
The "Space Jam" sequel follows LeBron James as he and his fictional son Dom (played by Cedric Joe) get stuck inside a computer server universe.
