PS5 updates: Latest software, game improvements and update history

Tom's Guide 25 June, 2021 - 11:02am

All the latest news on PS5 updates and patches you may have missed

Read on for the latest PS5 updates news, as well as everything you need to know about keeping your PS5 up-to-date.

While Sony is focused on PS5 updates, the PS4 hasn't been forgotten, with the latest 8.53 firmware update boosting performance.

Weighing in at 481MB, the update isn't huge, and nor does it change a great deal; Sony simply notes that "this system software update improves system performance."

It’s a small change, but the PS4’s user interface could be sluggish at times, so this update could make the UI feel noticeably smoother. That’ll come in handy if you’ve not yet made the move to the PS5.

Patch 1.08 enables PS5 players to select whether the game targets 30 frames per second or 60 fps. While the game was able to hit a relatively consistent 30 fps, doubling the frame rate is going to be the best way to play the stellar game and we recommend you play it on the PS5 over the PS4.

Furthermore, the April update included a handful of settings that can be tweaked for ultimate convenience; from automatically switching to non-HDR output, to powering on and off in sync with your TV.

One of the best games of all time, God of War has been given a frame-rate boost when running on the PS5.

Sony has updated the PS5 so it doesn’t install PS4 version of games alongside their PS5 equivalents.

But with an update, the bug has been squashed — meaning you’ll not have to worry as much about games taking up that precious storage space unnecessarily.

Most PS5 updates for the system and games will install automatically. It’s worth noting that if your PS5 is in rest mode it will automatically install update files and game patches.

To ensure that you have the PS5 set to update its files automatically, navigate to the console’s Settings. From there, head to System Software, then System Software Update and Settings.

Once there, simply toggle on or off Download Update Files Automatically or Install Update Files Automatically to enable or disable automatic system updates.

For automatic game updates, which are enabled by default, head to Settings, then  Saved Data and Game/App Settings and navigate to Automatic Updates. Under that menu you can turn on Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode.

PlayStation Plus: Free PS4 and PS5 Games We May Get for July 2021

ComicBook.com 25 June, 2021 - 11:02am

It's almost July, and Sony has yet to reveal the free PlayStation Plus games PS4 and PS5 players are getting for the summer month. This could change tomorrow, but there's a possibility it won't change until next week. Whatever the case, in the meantime, we have the PS4 and PS5 games we think PlayStation Plus subscribers are going to get when early July comes around.

In July, not much of consequence is coming out on PS4, PS5, or really any gaming platform. It's going to be another slow month in a year that's proving to be one of the slowest years in gaming since 2014. Not only does this mean July is a great candidate for a killer PlayStation Plus lineup, but as you may know, Sony has upped the ante in 2021 when it comes to PlayStation Plus, offering some of the best months in the history of the service. Next month, we don't expect the service have another one of these months, but we do expect it to have a solid offering.

For the purpose of this article, we have chosen two PS4 games and one PS5 game, however, it's worth noting the lineup could be bigger than this, as it has been on a few occasions this year. That said, it's important to keep in mind these are -- for the most part -- just predictions. And according to the law of probability, we're wrong, but for what it's worth, we have been correct on several occasions in the past thanks to a knowledge of the industry, a history of the service, and on occasion, a tip or two.

Reason: We can't lie, this pick is influenced by a recent leak revealing that the PS5 version of the surprise 2019 hit is PlayStation Plus bound. Whether this will happen or not, remains to be seen, but for now, it's an easy pick.

About: "Follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo, in a heartrending journey through the darkest hours of history. Hunted by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by unstoppable swarms of rats, Amicia and Hugo will come to know and trust each other. As they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds, they will fight to find purpose in this brutal, unforgiving world."

Reason: We had to double-check to make sure Dragon Age Inquisition hasn't been offered in the past, and it hasn't. However, the series does have some history with the service, with Dragon Age: Origins being offered as a PS3 game back in 2016. Not only has Dragon Age Inquisition been out since 2015, but it's routinely discounted to a few bucks. This alone should make it an easy deal to strike for Sony. However, making the deal easier, and perhaps even cheaper, is the fact that Dragon Age 4 is reportedly going to be revealed next month at EA Play. If that's the case, there's no reason EA and PlayStation shouldn't capitalize on the Dragon Age hype.

About: "When the sky opens up and rains down chaos, the world needs heroes. Become the savior of Thedas in Dragon Age: Inquisition – Game of the Year Edition. You are the Inquisitor, tasked with saving the world from itself. But the road ahead is paved with difficult decisions. Thedas is a land of strife. Factions constantly war with each other even as a larger demonic invasion has begun. And you? You and your band of champions are the only ones who can hold it together. It’s your job to lead them...or fall."

Reason: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is the most random prediction here, but one that could intrigue Sony due to the fact that Microsoft Flight Simulator is coming to Xbox Series X next month. In other words, if Sony wants to undermine this release, it would be smart to offer a competitor for free. Of course, the two are very different games, but they almost certainly share a fanbase.

About: "Become an ace pilot and soar through photorealistic skies with full 360 degree movement; down enemy aircraft and experience the thrill of engaging in realistic sorties! Aerial combat has never looked or felt better!"

PS5 stock LIVE – AMAZON consoles to drop THIS MORNING & Argos next week

The US Sun 25 June, 2021 - 09:33am

News Corp is a network of leading companies in the worlds of diversified media, news, education, and information services.

ARGOS UK has been tipped to drop a massive new batch of Playstation5 consoles next week - and Amazon could drop this morning.

It comes after the much-sought console dropped at GAME and Very's UK online stores on Monday and Tuesday.

A huge Playstation 5 restock has long been predicted and it seems like we could finally see a proper supply of consoles on the shelves this month.

The PS5 was released six months ago to critical acclaim but for millions of gamers it has proven almost impossible to get hold of.

Thanks to parts shortages, coronavirus-related delays and then, incredibly, a giant container ship blocking the Suez Canal and holding up deliveries, supplies to the UK has been incredibly limited.

HOW TO BUY SONY’S LATEST RELEASE: DUALSENSE CONTROLLERS

While Sony is yet to fix its PS5 supply and demand issues, it has given us the gifts on not one, but two new Dualsense wireless controllers in fresh colours – a Sony product we've all been craving since the PS5 console first released in November.

SONY TO UNVEAL VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSET DESIGNED FOR PS5 NEXT YEAR

Sony says it’s working on a new virtual reality headset designed for the PlayStation 5 – and it could be out as early as next year.

The Japanese tech titan has already teased some of the PSVR 2’s specs and capabilities, but is keeping the exact release date a closely guarded secret.

In a recent report, Bloomberg claimed that the PSVR 2 will be released in late 2022.

Sources with inside knowledge of the project told the news site that Sony plans to use Samsung OLED panels in its high-tech headset.

PS5 RETAILERS: WHO IS STOCKING THE PS5?

With the PS5 proving very difficult to grab, you can be sure to expand your luck this time by frequently visiting the above retailers

HOW TO GET FREE GAMES WITH PS PLUS THIS MONTH

There are three games up for grabs with PS Plus this month.

The first is a PS5-only offering called Operation: Tango.

It’s described as a co-op spy adventure where you complete missions in a near-future sci-fi world.

It’s available until Monday, July 5.

Then PS4 and PS5 owners can enjoy Virtual Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown.

It’s an epic 1v1 fighter exclusive to PlayStation, with support for 16-player tournaments.

You can get it until Monday, August 2.

Finally there’s Star Wars: Squadrons, which is a space battle game where you take on the role of a starfighter pilot following the events of the Return of the Jedi.

It’s up for grabs until Monday, July 5.

PS5 SHORTAGE ‘TO LAST UNTIL 2022’

The global PlayStation 5 shortage is likely to continue until next year, leaving frustrated gamers unable to get their hands on a new console for months to come, according to one expert.

Sony’s machine has been largely out of stock since November and probably won’t be available any time soon due to a shortfall in supply of microchips.

Speaking to TechRadar on Sunday, analyst Anshel Sag suggested that as a result of the chip crisis, PS5 shortages will drag on for months to come.

“I honestly don’t see this shortage getting better until next year,” said Sag, a Senior Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.

DIGITAL VS DISK: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

When Sony announced it was releasing its all-new gaming console, they forgot to mention they were releasing not one, but two PlayStation 5s. The differences between the two are in fact very minimal.

The names offer the tell-tale sign of the difference because the only thing that distinguishes the “digital edition” from the “disc edition” (which sony is referring to as the PlayStation 5) is that it doesn’t have a disc drive and it’s less expensive.

The PlayStation 5 costs £449.99, while the PlayStation 5 digital edition is cheaper at £359.99.

Deciding which one to opt for really does come down to how often you think you’ll need and use the disc drive, if not at all, it might be worth considering the digital edition owing to the fact it's £90 cheaper.

ROCKSTAR GAMES SHUTTING DOWN GRAND THEFT AUTO MULTIPLAYER MODE ON SOME CONSOLES

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar has announced that it is shutting down the game’s popular multiplayer mode on some consoles.

GTA Online, which is played by more than 100,000 people globally, will cease to exist on Xbox 360 and PS3 from December 16.

The move will bring an end to the multiplayer mode as well as website stat tracking via the Rockstar Games Social Club, Rockstar said.

The US company will continue to run the service on Xbox One and PS4, where it’s still going strong nearly eight years on from the launch of GTA 5. “Please note, these changes are strictly for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA Online,” Rockstar said in a statement on Wednesday.

The shutdown “will have no impact on access to, or progress within, the Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode”, the New York-based firm added.

ASDA RELEASED PS5 STOCK BUT TWITTER USERS WERE LESS THAN IMPRESSED WITH THE AVAILABLE STOCK

With many gamers still frustrated with not being able to grab a console, many couldn't help but to take to Twitter to express their anger.

It comes after Asda announced a restock, with many gamers saying it was sold it in seconds.

PS5 OWNERS TO GET EARLY PERKS

PS5 owners can now bag new features earlier than their pals.

Sony has launched a special scheme that gives you special access to upcoming features – BEFORE they go live for everyone else.

Normally new features for gadgets and consoles are trialed internally – and then released to the world.

But some companies will let select users try out features early, to see if they work well.

Sony is doing just that with PS5 updates, and has launched a new PS5 System Software Beta Program.

PS5 OWNERS CAN NOW BUY ANOTHER PS5, SONY REVEALS

Sony are allowing PS5 owners grab another console – after purchase invitations for a new wave of PlayStation Direct stock have been sent out to those who may already own Sony’s elusive console.

When Battlefield 2042 was announced, it was revealed that players on Xbox Series X, PS5 and PC would be able to play in servers with up to 128 players at once.

However, you might not always be playing against humans in those matches, with EA now explaining AI bots will also be taking place in the game.

In conversation with The Verge, EA explained that up to 64 'AI soldiers' could be used to fill up empty lobbies depending on factors like your region, platform and the time of day.

However, the company added that human players will always take priority, therefore it is thought that during busy times you won’t run into many AI.
