The United States men's national team dropped points yet again in Concacaf World Cup qualifying on Sunday, settling for a 1-1 draw against Canada as the road to Qatar 2022 gets a little trickier. The U.S. had the chances they needed to win the game, but they almost came up with nothing in a match that was open and back and forth in the second half. Brenden Aaronson scored for the Americans early in the second half before Cyle Larin's equalizer moments later, set up by Alphonso Davies.

Sitting on two points after two games, this isn't the start anybody envisioned for the United States. Next up is another touch matchup away from home at Honduras (Paramount+) to close out the September international window. With Sunday's underwhelming result in the books, here are three takeaways to digest ahead of Matchday 3.

Drawing against El Salvador wasn't ideal, but it's hard to win anywhere, especially on the road, in Concacaf. This result, failing to win at home against Canada, was by far worse. While the play may have been a bit more encouraging going forward, it was still extremely below average. There continues to be a disconnect in the team, the lack of veteran presence means we've got what seems like eight to 10 kids running around out there at times struggling to stay within the system. Having Sebastian Lletget slide into the starting lineup helped a bit, but there are just way too many questions. Now, to be fair, not having Weston McKennie (suspended) and Gio Reyna (hamstring) didn't help things, but there is still no creator in this side that makes them look threatening. It's time for some serious changes to the formation and the system.

Christian Pulisic, who made his long-awaited return on Sunday, is not being used properly, as he's getting too deep into the middle and continually getting fouled far away from goal. You can't blame him because he's got little-to-no help. It makes sense sometimes to have him drop to get the ball, but when he is being hacked down time and time again, something has to be done, and it didn't happen.

Numbers wise, he had a decent night with three shots, an xG of 0.56, three chances created and an xA of 0.29. But he still needs to stay higher, have somebody get him the ball out wide and let him go to work.

In what was another familiar scene, U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter waited too long to make changes to the squad. First, he didn't even use all five subs allowed, and three of the four he made entered the match after the 80th minute. The first was because of Sergino Dest's injury. Why wait so long? It's one thing if your team is on the front foot and looks capable of winning. It's another thing when your team looks like it may just let a point slip. It's inexcusable and just baffling. Maybe the options off the bench aren't ideal, but get some fresh legs in their and give somebody a shot.

Meltzer also reported fans should expect surprises tonight and people within AEW are “very excited about the show.” Many believe All Out will “destroy” AEW’s current PPV record, which was this year’s Revolution bringing in around 159,000 buys.

AEW All Out 2021: Full list of winners, match results, video, more

DraftKings Nation 05 September, 2021 - 06:48pm

We bring you the rundown of what happened at AEW’s All Out ppv on Sunday.

The show will be highlighted by the in-ring debut of CM Punk, who ended his seven-year hiatus from professional wrestling by signing with the company in August. The 10-match card will also feature four title matches and a 21-women Casino Battle Royale where the winner gets a future shot at the AEW Women’s World title.

It was a heckuva match, and Punk brings back his patented finisher. But the pop for him in his hometown was unforgettable.

Jericho was actually counted out for his career, but another official came out to help Aubrey Edwards and tell her that Le Champion actually had his foot on the rope. Edwards restarted the match, the legend hit The Walls of Jericho, and MJF tapped in the center of the ring.

The weird ending might mean these two will keep feuding, which would be fun for everyone as they’re a great pair in and out of the ring. Dancing, singing, or wrestling.

Ruby Soho was the Joker, and made her AEW debut. Going last has its advantages, and it was Thunder Rosa and Soho as the last two in the ring. Soho hung on for the victory, and guarantees her a shot at Dr. Britt Baker’s AEW Championship.

The Lucha Brothers win by pinfall over the Young Bucks.

The spots were breathtaking, as Ray Fenix went to the top of a massive cage and hit a dive from the top. There was a shoe filled with thumbtacks. There was a superkick fest in the middle of the ring. The crowd could not have been louder.

Dr. Britt Baker, DMD wins by submission with Lockjaw to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship.

Jon Moxley wins by pinfall with Paradigm Shift. He set it up with a headbutt and DDT.

After the match, Minoru Suzuki shows up. He exchanges forearms with Moxley and eventually nails the Gotch Piledriver.

CM Punk found inspiration from Eddie Guerrero for coming to AEW

Sportskeeda 05 September, 2021 - 03:00pm

In a conversation with Jim Ross on the countdown show for All Out, Punk explained his goal for joining AEW. The clip starts at 22:09 of the program.

Jim Ross: What do you want to do for this company?

CM Punk: Sigh...

Ross: You’re supposed to say, ‘I want to be the AEW champion.’ See, that’s wrestle speak. But in Phil Brooks’ heart, what do you want to do for this company?

Punk: You know, I got to wrestle Eddie Guerrero quite a few times. I think so many times that a lot of people out there don’t realize it. Eddie famously got rehired. You know, when I met Eddie and got to wrestle him, he was in the midst of a very dark time in his life. So, he had the indies. I don’t think he wanted to be on the indies, you know. I’m sure he was making okay money, but he wasn’t making Eddie Guerrero money. He wasn’t making the money that he should have. And I befriended this guy. And amidst that, he cleans himself up. He gets his job back.

He fulfilled one of his bookings against me in Pittsburgh. The promoter’s name was Norm Connors, Pittsburgh IWC. So, I show up to the building, and I’m like, ‘I’m so happy for you, dude. You know, this is great.’ Promoter comes by and gives us times, says, ‘Oh, by the way, Eddie’s the Intercontinental champion.’ Okay. So, I’m not beating Eddie Guerrero, you know. I think I was the IWC champion at the time. Eddie says, ‘No, I can’t beat your champion. Let’s do a time limit draw.’

Wow, okay. So, now I’m nervous. I got to go, I think it was 30 minutes with Eddie. Can I do this? I like challenges. And I just thought that was super selfless of him. Number one, to fulfill bookings. Not a lot of guys would do that. Number two, to say I don’t got to beat you. I’m not going to be here next week, next month. You are. He’s the champion of a place, that for better or for worse, some day I would like to work at, right?

So, we have this match. The bell rings. The crowd stands on their feet. I’m exhausted. I’m happy its over. You know? Because the dude was a machine. And he grabs the microphone, and he says, ‘Punky, I can’t leave without knowing. I should have been able to beat you.’He said, ‘I want five more minutes, and I’m going to put the IC title on the line.’

This is not talked about beforehand. This is Eddie. I’m going to start crying. And I’m like, ‘Okay.’ So, we lock back up and he says, ‘Sorry, Punky. I got to hit the frog splash.’ And I’m just elated, because I’m a kid and I love pro wrestling and I love Eddie Guerrero.

He hits me with the frog splash, he pins me, and then he gets on the mic. And he says, ‘You’re good. Some day, you’re going to be up there (WWE) and you’re going to wrestle me for this (Intercontinental Championship) up there.’

That’s what I would like to do for this company (AEW). I’m not saying that I’m Eddie Guerrero to any of the kids in this locker room. Maybe I am, maybe I’m not. But that spirit of wanting to fulfill dates and wanting to give back and also wanting to challenge young wrestlers with scenarios that aren’t talked about. Pull stuff out of the hat. Learn how to ad lib.

Man, I’ve done, I’ve literally done everything, except come back and tell the story that I want to tell my way. And along the way, if I can be Eddie Guerrero to a kid, I want to do that. There’s so many legends in this business that selflessly helped me. Harley Race. Who ever thought Harley Race would like a kid like me? Eddie Guerrero. Tracy Smothers. I mean, the list goes on and on.

Punk will get his first chance to follow Eddie’s path by wrestling Darby Allin tonight on the All Out PPV.

With Punk’s motivations in mind, which AEW wrestlers would you like to see Punk work with? Which wrestlers would benefit the most from dancing with the best in the world?
