The Jaguars' attempt to turn around their fortunes met terrible luck Monday night.
Rookie running back Travis Etienne's Lisfranc injury has been diagnosed as a significant tear that will require surgery and will end his rookie season before it began, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday, per a source informed of the situation.
Rapoport reported that Etienne's original recovery timeline was a minimum of 12 weeks, but Jacksonville officially placed Etienne on injured reserve Tuesday, which means Etienne will have to wait for 2022 to make his NFL debut.
Etienne will undergo surgery on his foot as soon as possible, Rapoport adds.
Initial X-rays came back negative, leading the Jaguars to hope the injury was just a sprain, but further evaluation revealed the severity of Etienne's ailment. Etienne suffered the injury during Monday night's preseason loss to the Saints, exiting after just three downs played in New Orleans and spending the rest of the evening on the sideline walking with a considerable limp.
Etienne played a total of 16 snaps between Jacksonville's first two preseason games, carrying the ball twice for three yards. The first-round pick figured to play a role in both the running and passing game for the Jaguars, who were focused on preparing him for a variety of responsibilities by having him take reps with both running backs and receivers.
Instead of continuing to ramp up toward a prominent position in Jacksonville's new-look offense, Etienne will spend the next few months recovering and rehabilitating his injured foot. With Etienne's rookie season over, the Jaguars will turn to James Robinson and Carlos Hyde for most of their running back duties, while they'll have to deploy receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. to take any pass-catching reps they had earmarked for Etienne.
Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence, meanwhile, will forge ahead into his first season without his former Clemson teammate at his side.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have lost one of their 2021 first-round picks for the entire season. During their preseason matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night, rookie running back Travis Etienne suffered a serious Lisfranc injury that will end his season before it could begin, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. It was originally thought Etienne could have surgery and potentially return late in the season, but the Jaguars placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday, which means he will not be allowed to return this year.
Etienne rushed once for one yard and caught one pass for three yards before exiting the game in the second quarter Monday due to his injury. The rookie out of Clemson didn't get many opportunities to flash his playmaking ability in the Jaguars' first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns either, as he rushed just once for two yards and was targeted once in the passing game.
After selecting his college quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jacksonville selected Etienne with the No. 25 overall pick. The two-time ACC Player of the Year was a dynamic, dual-threat weapon during his time in Clemson, and helped the Tigers win four ACC titles and a national title in 2018. According to Clemson's official website, Etienne is the NCAA FBS record holder for most career games scoring a touchdown -- 46 of his 55 career games. In all, he rushed for 4,952 yards and 70 touchdowns in four seasons.
With Etienne out for the year, first-year head coach Urban Meyer will rely on James Robinson, Carlos Hyde and Dare Ogunbowale in the run game. This unfortunate news does provide a huge boost for Robinson's fantasy value this season. Robinson had an impressive rookie campaign last year.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a foot injury on Tuesday.
We have made the following roster moves: Waived OL Derwin Gray, CB Jameson Houston, and DT Kenny Randall. Placed RB Travis Etienne Jr. on injured reserve. https://t.co/wm8F8SBspx
Having already selected Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 pick, the Jaguars reunited Etienne with his Clemson teammate when they took him 25th overall in the 2021 NFL draft.
The 5'10" running back had a prolific college career, running for 4,952 yards and 70 touchdowns while catching 102 passes for 1,155 yards and eight scores. He was also the ACC Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019.
The Jaguars obviously had big plans for Etienne right out of the gate, because spending a first-rounder on a running back is no longer the norm. Not to mention, the team already has James Robinson, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2020, on the roster.
With Etienne out of action, Robinson figures to take on the role of a featured back.
