TVLine 22 July, 2021 - 09:03am 8 views

The limited series — which is based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s book of the same name — takes place at a swanky health and wellness resort where nine frazzled city dwellers “try to get on a path to a better way of living,” according to the official synopsis. Watching over them is Kidman’s Masha, “a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies.”

Good Morning America was first to air the two-and-a-half minute spot Thursday, which shows Masha’s clients — played by the likes of Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly), Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire), Luke Evans (The Alienist), Bobby Cannavale (Homecoming), Regina Hall (Black Monday) and Samara Weaving (SMILF) — as they lie in grave-sized holes they’ve dug for themselves… presumably to decompress, not to be buried alive. (It’s no wonder McCarthy’s character asks, “Is Masha bats–t, or is she the real deal?”)

Rounding out the ensemble of familiar faces are Tiffany Boone (Hunters), Melvin Gregg (American Vandal), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) and Grace Van Patten (Maniac).

In addition to Nine Perfect Strangers, the streamer’s summer slate includes FX on Hulu’s Reservation Dogs (premiering Monday, Aug. 9); Only Murders In the Building (premiering Tuesday, Aug. 31); Season 2 of Wu-Tang: An America Saga (premiering Wednesday, Sept. 8); and FX on Hulu’s Y: The Last Man (premiering Monday, Sept. 13).

'Nine Perfect Strangers' Trailer: Nicole Kidman Makes Nine Celebrities Dig Their Own Grave

/FILM 22 July, 2021 - 01:01pm

Posted on Thursday, July 22nd, 2021 by Shania Russell

Setting aside time for your health and wellness is very important self-care that we’ve all been neglecting. But have no fear, Nicole Kidman has just the fix for you. In her new limited series for Hulu, Kidman plays a health guru set on improving the lives of nine strangers who’ve decided to spend 10 days at her resort. Her approach includes all kinds of helpful wellness strategies… including digging their own graves and lying in them. Which definitely won’t have any lasting psychological impact.

This trippy drama comes from a book by Liane Moriarty, the author of Big Little Lies, and reunites Kidman with David E. Kelley. If this kind of twisting drama is in your wheelhouse, then get ready, because Nine Perfect Strangers is just weeks away from release.

Check out the trailer for Nine Perfect Strangers below!

Masha is the mysterious owner and leader at the center of the retreat whose intentions may not be as pure as she says. As she repeatedly says, for any healing to occur, the strangers must put themselves entirely in her hands. What having this control means to Masha, and what she’ll do with it, are the questions likely to be answered over the series. It spells out trouble for these vulnerable people, who each come with varying levels of openness, but all seem somewhat desperate for her help. Ultimately, they have no choice but to trust her as the “expert” in the field, however reluctant they feel.

Early in the trailer, Luke Evans’ character calls wellness retreats “utter crap” but is quickly reminded that whatever his opinions, he’s still chosen to attend and put himself at Masha’s mercy. In brief flashbacks, we see glimpses of the memories that haunt the characters, with an ominous reminder that Masha has chosen them all for a reason. All we know for sure is that Masha is determined to have them surrender themselves to her. But how easily can they trust yet another stranger?

Funnily, Nine Perfect Strangers comes the same year as HBO’s The White Lotus, another show about intrigue at a resort. However, Hulu’s series puts much more emphasis on the isolation and questions of trauma. Knowing Moriarty’s past approaches, there’s bound to be much more bubbling beneath the surface of each character.

Nine Perfect Strangers has a stacked cast of characters for Kidman to psychologically torture — or, if we’re totally misreading her weird vibes, actually help find relief. The cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Luke Evans, Bobby Cannavale, Regina Hall, Samara Weaving, Melvin Gregg, Asher Keddie, Grace Van Patten, Tiffany Boone, and Manny Jacinto.

Jonathan Levine directs all eight episodes of the limited series, while Kelley serves as showrunner, having co-written the show alongside John-Henry Butterworth and Samantha Strauss.

The first three episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers will be available to stream on Hulu on August 18 with weekly releases to follow.

Check out the official synopsis for Nine Perfect Strangers below.

Based on The New York Times bestselling book by author Liane Moriarty, “Nine Perfect Strangers” takes place at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation as nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living. Watching over them during this 10-day retreat is the resort’s director, Masha, a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies. However, these nine “perfect” strangers have no idea what is about to hit them.

The Nine Perfect Strangers Trailer Has Us Ready to Surrender Ourselves to Nicole Kidman - E! Online

E! Online 22 July, 2021 - 12:34pm

On Thursday, July 22, Hulu released the first full-length trailer for their upcoming drama, Nine Perfect Strangers, which is based off the book by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty and is set to premiere on August 18. Debuting a new, Russian accent, Nicole Kidman stars as Masha Dmitrichenko, a wellness retreat guru ready to transform the lives of nine, wait for it, strangers, including Frances (Melissa McCarthy), Lars (Luke Evans), Tony (Bobby Cannavale), Carmel (Regina Hall), Napoleon (Michael Shannon), Jessica (Samara Weaving), Ben (Melvin Gregg), Heather (Asher Keddie) and Zoe (Grace Van Patten).

The only thing she asks of her guests? "Surrender yourself to me."

Oh, and we should mention that the guests are laying in open graves for this particular activity. While we'd willingly give Kidman a kidney, we're not sure how we feel about Masha.

And it seems we aren't the only ones doubting Masha, as Tony expresses doubt that he's even supposed to be at the resort, Tranquillum House. Although Frances encourages her peer to stay put, she later quips, "It could be a real s--t show. What the hell do I know, right?"

Perhaps Frances should've heeded Tony's warning as drama soon unfolds for, what Masha calls, the "particularly volatile group." But, as the first look below teases, Masha clearly had a hand in the chaos.

"There's nothing to fear," she assures the group. "Because this, it's gonna change everything." Er, we don't know about that.

In addition to Kidman and her strangers, the highly anticipated miniseries also stars Tiffany Boone and Manny Jacinto as Tranquillum House employees.

‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Trailer Stars Nicole Kidman Hosting a Questionable Wellness Retreat

Collider 22 July, 2021 - 12:11pm

The series follows Masha (Kidman), the host of a 10-day wellness retreat where the guests may be in over their heads. The new trailer showcases several of the nine guests as they meet with each other and try to decide if Masha is for real or not. Soon, they participate in a strange form of therapy where they have to lay in graves while Masha's assistant throws some dirt over them. As the trailer progresses, some of the guests seem to go mad, while others want answers to the mystery of what they have gotten themselves into. The rest of the trailer contains a montage of images that range from extremely suspenseful to absolutely joyful, showing that this miniseries will be nothing short of a trip.

Nine Perfect Strangers is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty. Moriarty also wrote the novel "Big Little Lies," which was adapted into the hit HBO series that also starred Kidman and was produced by Blossom Films. Other cast members of Nine Perfect Strangers include Melvin Gregg (The Way Back), Asher Keddie (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Grace Van Patten (Under the Silver Lake), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Tiffany Boone (Hunters), Hal Cumpston (The Walking Dead: World Beyond), and Zoe Terakes (Wentworth).

The story’s another adaptation of a Liane Moriarty novel because heck, why not? Her material pairs well with Kidman’s acting style, and this time around, Kidman aims to give you some chills.
