What time is Smackdown tonight?

Don't miss SmackDown, tonight at 8/7C on FOX. wwe.comSmackDown: Aug. 27, 2021

Fox reportedly wasn't happy that WWE didn't make a greater effort to bring back CM Punk before Punk signed with All Elite Wrestling and debuted on Rampage last week.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingInc.com's Marc Middleton), Fox executives were "very upset" with the way the Punk situation went down, especially since Fox had a good relationship with Punk from his time on FS1's WWE Backstage in 2019 and 2020.

Meltzer noted that Fox's unhappiness regarding Punk going to AEW played a role in WWE bringing back Brock Lesnar and Becky Lynch at SummerSlam and positioning both of them to be part of SmackDown on Fox moving forward.

Lynch, who hadn't been on WWE programming since May 2020 when she announced she was pregnant, was the surprise replacement for Sasha Banks in the SmackDown Women's Championship match against Bianca Belair.

The Man won the title thanks to a cheap shot, which suggests she will be on the blue brand moving forward.

Meanwhile, Lesnar showed up for the first time since WrestleMania 36 in April 2020 when he came out to confront Universal champion Roman Reigns after Reigns beat John Cena to retain the title in the main event of SummerSlam.

Punk paid instant dividends for AEW by drawing over 1.1 million viewers for Rampage despite it being in the 10 p.m. ET slot on TNT. Punk's first appearance on Dynamite this week drew over 1.1 million viewers as well.

Given that Punk was one of the biggest stars in wrestling when he left WWE over seven years ago and hadn't been in a wrestling ring since, the initial boosts were expected.

Whether Punk keeps the upward trend going remains to be seen, but there is no doubt he was a huge signing for AEW, as was the re-signing of Lesnar and return of Lynch for WWE and SmackDown on Fox specifically.

Lesnar WWE return reportedly the result of ‘last minute political deal’

Cageside Seats 28 August, 2021 - 01:40am

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was recipe with three key ingredients...

With Cena heading back to Hollywood for the foreseeable future, executives at FOX (who you might recall signed a billion dollar a couple years back so they’d have the U.S. rights to air SmackDown until 2024) weren’t happy Vince McMahon & team didn’t even make a play to sign Punk. During his brief run at FOX Sports on WWE Backstage, Punk apparently made quite an impression on the brass, who have a very positive view of him as a result.

Dave Meltzer says things are “always up and down” between FOX and WWE, since the SmackDown deal ends up meaning NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock is promoted on FOX during a time when FOX is rolling out its own streaming offerings. When WWE not trying to sign Punk to fill the Cena-sized hole in their Friday night line-up sent the relationship more down than usual, WWE “felt the need to get Lesnar and [Becky] Lynch to SmackDown right away.”

While it reportedly didn’t make Raw partner USA happy, it does seem to have made Brock happy. Meltzer wrote in the WON that “as always, Lesnar’s timing got him an even better deal.”

Maybe Brock should inherit “The Game” moniker from Triple H. Because no one plays it better than Lesnar.

Becky Lynch would like to apologize ... for absolutely nothing

Cageside Seats 28 August, 2021 - 01:40am

Reports quickly spread that she asked to come back as a heel, an interesting bit of news considering she left to have a child as one of the top babyfaces in the company.

Question, then: How would they handle her first appearance on Friday Night SmackDown since then?

Answer: She apologized ... for absolutely nothing.

"I am sorry for absolutely nothing." - @BeckyLynchWWE about SummerSlam. #SmackDown pic.twitter.com/VLHsnK79yY

Okay, okay. That was only after all this:

"I missed you guys." - @BeckyLynchWWE to the @WWEUniverse #SmackDown pic.twitter.com/BQeCckSkSh

Oh, she was wildly cheered. Of course she was. She acted like a babyface too, telling the fans how much she missed them and making sure we all know how hard she worked while she was away. She even wore a shirt that shouted out the town they were in for the show. Sure, she used underhanded tactics at SummerSlam but, hey, that was just opportunity meeting preparation and all that.

If she’s a heel now, she damn sure isn’t acting like one — or at least not enough of one. She came across less like a bad guy and more like a mischievous good guy. It’s still early, though, and fans did also cheer for Belair attempting to get a rematch.

Brock Lesnar Challenged by Olympian Gable Steveson

PopCulture.com 27 August, 2021 - 11:27pm

Brock Lesnar is back in WWE, signing a contract that lasts for a year and a half and could feature eight matches. The reported contract has led to the Twiter account "Wrestling Should Be Fun" to ask the question of who do fans want Lesnar to face? Olympic wrestler Gable Stevenson saw the tweet and responded "ME!"

Stevenson, 21, is coming off an impressive outing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, winning the gold medal in freestyle wrestling (125kg). Earlier in the year, Stevenson won the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship on the 285-pound level. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Stevenson met with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon during SummerSlam weekend. It was also reported that Stevenson didn't meet UFC as the MMA promotion hasn't pursued him not at the same level in WWE. Steveson has expressed interested in competing in UFC also.

Earlier this month, Stevenson talked about possibly joining WWE. “If I ever go to WWE, I’d be a ‘Paul Heyman Guy,’" Stevenson said, per Sports Illustrated. “Heyman is a legend. We’d be two people doing great things, and that would be a tough team to beat. And I’ve known Brock since I was in high school. He’s been there for me for a long time, making sure I do things the right way and put my best foot forward.”

Stevenson went on to reveal that he has received support from many WWE and UFC stats. “WWE has been so great to me,” Steveson says. “Triple H, Brock, Heyman, Ric Flair and so many others have been so supportive. So have people from UFC, like Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones and Henry Cejudo, who have also sent me congratulations. He also said NFL teams have reached out to him. So many great organizations and teams have reached out. A scout from the Bills, there is a connection with the Ravens. The Olympic gold medal is helping me see the world, so my next step is going to be a big decision. I’m going to decompress now and think about it.”

Stevenson vs. Lesnar would be a draw. However, Lesnar's first match will likely be against Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. Lesnar made a surprise return at the end of SummerSlam and indicated he wanted Reigns' title. He then gave an F5 to John Cena who lost to Reigns in the main event.

Backstage News On Top WWE Star Inspiring Becky Lynch's Heel Turn

Still Real To Us 27 August, 2021 - 01:25pm

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Becky Lynch asked to be a heel moving forward, and some people in the company have said that Lynch was inspired by Roman Reigns.

It was noted that last time Becky Lynch tried to go heel she became the most popular star in the company, and the hottest star that the women’s division has ever seen. It was also noted that Becky Lynch could be seeing the heel turn as a personal challenge as it doesn’t make much sense from a business standpoint.

Becky Lynch is currently being advertised for tonight’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
