A pair of NL Central rivals close out a weekend series on the diamond in the Gateway City. The Pittsburgh Pirates are on the road as they make the trip to close out a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday afternoon. In the opening game of the series Friday night, it was the Pirates earning a 4-0 victory to ensure themselves a shot at winning the series regardless of what transpired Saturday. Will Pittsburgh be a thorn in St. Louis’ side once again or can the Cardinals regroup here? This article was published prior to the conclusion of the middle game of the series Saturday night at Busch Stadium.

The top trends for this contest are:
Pittsburgh took the opening game of this series but the fact remains that they have won just twice in their last 15 games entering Saturday. The Pirates are playing for nothing but pride at this point in time as they give a lot of younger guys an opportunity for playing time at the major league level. St. Louis is trying to hang in the wild card race and that means beating teams that they are better than in the standings. Wainwright has been solid even as he approaches his 40th birthday next week. The Cardinals are bound to cash in on some opportunities, if for no other reason than to balance out their dismal showing on Friday night. Brault keeps Pittsburgh in it but the lack of offensive production does them in here as the Cardinals earn the win on getaway day.
Brault has pitched well in his three outings this season as the totals in those games have been six, five and three runs, respectively. That’s an average of 4.67 runs per contest with all three games coming under the total. The Pirates are dead last in the majors with an average of 3.57 runs per game, a number that drops to only 3.21 runs per contest on the road, which is second-last in the majors as well. Wainwright has seen an average of 7.1 runs per game in his last 10 starts but that number falls to 5.6 runs a contest in his last five starts. Four of his last five starts have come in under the number and with the way things went in the opener, you can’t expect a ton of offensive production on either side here. This one ends up under the total.
