The latest incarnation of Marvel's long-running What If? series has transformed one of the most iconic Spider-Man sagas of all time into one of the darkest versions of Peter Parker's life. The series has returned to when Peter first donned his symbiote suit and seen the symbiote twist the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man into a sadistic killer. Now that he is free of the symbiote, Peter finally has a chance to finish this fight for good.
Unfortunately, the symbiote has sought out the last person it should ever get its hands on, and thanks to Reed Richards' amazing mind Venom has just become as dangerous as Knull.
This is not the first time that Venom has been weaponized in such a way. Even before King in Black, the Venom symbiote was used to produce a symbiote virus that was unleashed on Manhattan in 2008's Mighty Avengers #7 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. This attack was countered thanks to the combined efforts of Iron Man and Reed Richards, but this is not the case for the Manhattan of Spider's Shadow.
Much like Knull's invasion, this version of the Venom symbiote has managed to claim most of the heroes gathered within moments of unleashing its spawn. While Captain America and She-Hulk stand tall in their new aberrant forms, the other X-Men and Avengers can only try to stave off the tendrils of living darkness that are closing in around them. The scale of this attack might pale in comparison to the events of King in Black, but the fallout could easily be just as catastrophic.
This time around, the Venom symbiote is fully aware of its limitations and has gone to great lengths to overcome them. If it is this dedicated to becoming even more formidable, there is little chance that even Earth's Mightiest Heroes will stand a chance against it. With any luck, Peter Parker will find some weakness within the symbiote that even it doesn't realize it has. If not, the world of Spider's Shadow might come to its end almost as quickly as it was introduced.

Tom Holland is widely considered the best live-action Spider-Man to date. Since he made his debut in Captain America: Civil War he’s become a firm fan favorite, as proved by the massive outcry in 2019 when it seemed his stint in the MCU was up. Over Homecoming and Far From Home he developed this Spidey, played a key role in Infinity War and Endgame, and anticipation is high for this winter’s No Way Home.
But we’ve previously heard that No Way Home might be his last. Holland has said his contract ends with it, hinting at pursuing new opportunities while admitting he’d come back if asked. Zendaya also struck a worrying note, saying that the mood on set was sad as they suspected it was their last time together playing these characters.
Now it seems that there’s light on the horizon. Giant Freakin Robot is reporting that their “trusted and proven” sources have told them Kevin Feige and Tom Holland have discussed plans for a further Spider-Man MCU trilogy. This is, of course, contingent on another agreement with Sony Pictures to use Spidey, which may mean another few rounds of tense legal brinkmanship.
After No Way Home, it might be a smart idea for Spidey to take a short break before returning in Phase 5. This would give the cast space to explore other roles and, when they return, show the stories of them in their twenties. Miles Morales is going to end up in the MCU sooner or later and I’d love to see Holland’s character finally transitioning from pupil to mentor and passing down his skills.
Another consequence could be that the MCU gets closer to Sony’s Venom universe, potentially through some kind of multiversal crossover.
Either way, if this story pans out, the future of the MCU is once again Spider-Man-shaped.

Spider-Man is distinct from many other superhero characters for a myriad of reasons that have lent to his lasting popularity. Different versions of Spider-Man run the gamut of backgrounds and age groups, and the original Peter Parker is also a malleable character that can be a writer's playground. Spider-Man's powers are unique in a space dominated largely by simple super strength and flight. One aspect of his abilities really needs to shine when he webs his way into Avengers eventually, and that's the visceral feeling of freedom that his movement style can invoke.
In Spider-Man 2, movement felt visceral and fast. Player's could pick up speed rapidly, and needed to make sure there were actual structures to web onto while traveling. It was truly the first time the experience of feeling like Spider-Man swinging through the streets of New York was captured well in video games. This style would later inspire the underrated Ultimate Spider-Man game and the modern Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales games. Marvel's Avengers has a lot riding on Spider-Man coming to the game, so capturing that same sense of movement will be critical.
Avengers handles mobility well for most of its characters. Heroes like Thor that have access to flight are free to switch between grounded and aerial combat, but the approach can often still feel smaller-scale than what fans of the recent Spider-Man would expect for the character. It will certainly be a challenge to adapt such a mobile character into the format, so fans aren't sure of what to expect from Spider-Man in Avengers. The ensemble game has certainly drawn its criticisms, but its gameplay isn't often one of them, as the game has thus far done a good job of making each hero feel distinct from each other. Spider-Man and his web-swinging and wall-crawling needs to be handled with much care and deliver that same sense of freedom fans will expect from Spider-Man.
Marvel's Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Whether it’s He Who Remains or his variant Kang the Conqueror, “the man behind the curtain” in Loki Season 1, Episode 6 “For All Time. Always.” is being set up as one of the major villains in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s fundamentally different from Thanos, and yet, no less dangerous. Indeed, the upcoming slate of MCU productions is tinged with his influence, and his introduction here paves the way for some massive developments in the previously “sacred” timeline. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and What If…? are the two most obvious examples, but the trend appears likely to include Spider-Man: No Way Home as well.
No Way Home is confirmed to feature two villains from previous non-MCU Spider-Man films: Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2 and Jaimie Foxx’s Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But while it would certainly be possible to recast the actors in MCU versions of their previous roles -- as seen with J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Far from Home -- He Who Remains opens up an entirely wilder set of possibilities.
With his numerous variants and a colossal Multiversal War in his history whose precise details remain vague, He Who Remains offers an ideal explanation for why these out-of-canon villains would be keen to remain in the prime MCU. The conflict began, he claims, as variants of himself began to cross over into different timelines and the more malevolent ones saw nothing but lands to conquer. And who's to say another set of villains won't set out to do the same thing.
The movie versions of both Doc Ock and Electro died at the end of their respective films. which could mean that the variants in No Way Home are aware that they were “supposed” to die, crossing over into the MCU’s reality in an effort to avoid that fate. How that puts them into conflict with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man remains to be seen, as does the ever-swirling rumor that versions of the hero played by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will make appearances as well.
Regardless, He Who Remains discussed the desperation and ambition that his nastier variants made war upon opposing realities. Both Doctor Octopus and Electro have the in-canon intelligence to grasp the implications of a Multiverse and even leap new realities. And in both cases, they would be doing so for the same reasons as Loki and Sylvie. With their fate sealed in their home realities, the Multiverse offers them the only escape possible, and if that brings them into conflict with Spider-Man, other villains or even additional variants of themselves, their survival instinct will cause them to act with greater cunning and ruthlessness than others.

The world of Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow has seen Peter Parker transformed from Manhattan's friendliest superhero into a murderous menace simply by never shedding his symbiote suit back when he had the chance. This retelling of one of the most iconic storylines in Marvel history hasn't just changed its titular hero into a twisted version of himself, but now one of the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe as well.
Not only has Reed Richards just become the most important part of the Venom symbiote's scheme, but he might even be the powerful version of him yet.
Reed Richards' incredible intellect at its disposal, the Venom symbiote has started genetically engineering its own offspring in mass quantities. Besides having already bent the Thing to its will, the symbiote is poised to do the same to each and every other person it can reach with its new brood. Considering how quickly the symbiote implemented its plans, this might just be the most vicious version of Reed to date.
There might not be any telling precisely what the Maker is up to, but it is hard to imagine there could be any plan of his that could one-up the current trajectory that the Reed of Spider's Shadow is on. The symbiote-infested Mister Fantastic isn't any threat to the Multiverse at large yet. But with the way things have stacked up for the Venom of Spider's Shadow, it may just be a matter of time before he spreads his symbiote tendrils into the Multiverse.

While Venom didn't make a direct appearance in Marvel's Spider-Man, the game certainly laid a foundation for him to show up at some point. Venom is not mentioned by name, but when players first see Harry Osborn being kept in a stasis chamber at the end of the game, he is covered in a symbiote-like substance. This heavily implied that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could feature Venom, but it still leaves the question of why the character is being delayed at all. As frustrating as it may be, there might be a few good reasons why the Spider-Man franchise hasn't introduced Venom yet.
The next Marvel's Spider-Man has a lot to follow up on from the first game, and Venom is one of the most highly anticipated aspects that fans are looking out for. Insomniac has already shown a lot of care for Spider-Man and all of the characters around him, so Venom will probably get the same treatment. It certainly can be annoying that fans have had to wait this long, but the wait could be very worth it whenever Marvel's Spider-Man 2 releases.
Marvel's Spider-Man is available now for PS4 and PS5.

Sure, Spidey may be back in the MCU for a couple of movies, but his departure is still inevitable. Although, when Sony eventually regains the full Spidey film rights, the studio could continue his arc outside the MCU.
Of course, Sony would have to eradicate any references to the wider MCU, but this might make the stories stronger, as it would refocus the series on Peter Parker himself. Focusing on Peter’s journey is a large part of what made Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy such a resounding success.
With all the potential for sequels and spin-offs, Into the Spider-Verse is seemingly just the beginning. The post-credits scene provided Oscar Isaac’s debut as Spider-Man 2099, teasing a bright future for Spidey’s interdimensional cartoon adventures. Tom Holland’s Spidey could be integrated into the animated Spider-Verse alongside all the other Spider-Men.
Some fans are speculating that Spider-Man: No Way Home will lead to a live-action Spider-Verse, but just because Alfred Molina’s playing Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx is playing Electro, it doesn’t automatically mean Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men are going to show up. Sony could be saving such a crossover for the future.
In the comics, Spidey and Venom are usually enemies, but they’ve been known to reluctantly team up when they have a common enemy – usually Carnage, who’s about to take center stage in the Venom sequel – that they can’t defeat alone.
An interesting way to tackle Kraven – a big-game hunter who’s determined to track down and kill Spidey, who he deems to be the greatest prey of all – would be to chronicle his hunt for Spidey through his own eyes, with Holland appearing in the periphery.
Sony could make a trilogy of family-friendly college comedies (more Monsters University than Animal House) to follow up the MCU’s trilogy of John Hughes-style high school comedies.
Peter's true father figure is Uncle Ben, who’s presumably already dead in the MCU timeline. In Sony’s Spider-Man movies, the studio could faze out references to Tony and replace that emotional arc with flashbacks to wisdom that Uncle Ben imparted before his death.
Sony’s Holland-starring Spider-Man solo series could pick up in the aftermath of No Way Home, in which a more mature, world-weary Peter Parker is known to the public. After three Spidey franchises in two decades, Sony could finally look at this familiar icon from a unique angle.

Mind you, some spoilers from the Loki finale are coming below.
We’re about five months away from the No Way Home premiere, yet we have no first trailer. Even so, the film’s most important secret is hardly a mystery anymore.
Everyone and their MCU-loving grandmother knows that No Way Home will be a multiverse film. Various villains from Sony’s previous Spider-Man franchises will make the jump to the primary MCU reality. And the previous Spider-Men will join Tom Holland in No Way Home. The multiverse makes sense now that we saw Loki.
Sony and Marvel have not shown any footage from the upcoming film. They took their time with the title reveal, and that was the last thing we heard. We saw rumors about Spider-Man 3’s trailer left and right, but the first teasers never dropped.
Many speculated that Sony and Marvel were looking to keep up the illusion that people don’t know about the biggest No Way Home spoiler. But then a source who proved to have access to Marvel secrets claimed that the second No Way Home trailer will feature all three Spider-Men: Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield.
It would be logical to speculate that Marvel was waiting for its big Black Widow premiere to release the No Way Home trailer. But that hasn’t happened either, which was puzzling. Marvel has four MCU films in theaters this year, and Spider-Man 3 is the only one without a trailer.
But now that we saw the entire Loki show, it’s all coming together. The No Way Home trailer will make even more sense now that we know what happened with the TVA and Kang. Come to think of it, those who haven’t seen Loki will be so confused by the multiverse concepts that No Way Home trailers might touch on.

The Loki finale gave us the final details about how the multiverse works. We learned that the MCU timeline we watched before Loki is just one reality. The one that Kang and the TVA call the Sacred Timeline. Kang desperately tried to prevent the timeline from spawning other concurrent realities, which would lead to an inevitable multiversal war.
It all happened before, and the world is doomed to experience it again after the Loki finale. Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killed this first version of Kang, removing his protections over the Sacred Timeline. It’s the events in the finale that set up the upcoming Phase 4 films, especially the ones that deal with the multiverse.
Of note, one of the most touching scenes in Avengers: Endgame might be possible because of what Sylvie did in episode 6.
With all this multiverse knowledge, it’ll be a lot easier to understand whatever Sony and Marvel show us in the first Spider-Man 3 trailer. We’ll know why the multiverse is at war with itself and why we have more than one reality in the MCU.
After Loki, it’s easy to understand how old Spider-Man villains will invade the primary MCU reality. And why Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) would be involved in any kind of action that protects the douchebags’ reality. And why Strange would resort to bringing in other Spider-Man versions to help out Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Fans who haven’t seen Loki yet, or don’t plan on watching it before the Spider-Man 3 premiere, will probably have to wait for the film’s first act to understand what the multiverse is.
That said, there’s no telling when the first No Way Home trailer will drop. Now that Black Widow is out and Loki is done, we’re back to waiting for new attractions. What If…? launches on August 11th, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is out on September 3rd.
